    Bro. Love the channel. And that Board. Omg. Subscribed!!!! I just want 2 channels of a Neve board to push my master in and out of. Gotta be a reasonable console master section on my desktop.

    You have a great setup and I like how you utilize your equipment and find great workarounds for whatever issues you might have I have an old auditronics 110 console 16 channel 8 bus and definitely has its limitations but we find a way around it what's really important at the end of the days is the song and the energy your doing a great job getting that to come out of those speakers keep up the great work the best of luck to you and this artist I hope the record does really well

      Ty! 🙏The auditronics looks great! at the end of the day, the vibe and workflow from a great console makes such a difference. best of luck to you as well!

    Nice to see your detailed work flow. Question, are you able to automate without creating level problems for compressors? or do you just totally bypass automation

    • @hopetownsound
      @hopetownsound  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      so with the system I was working on that video I was not able to automate without affecting analog processing. I apologize that it took me time to find a system that does allow that. I'll point you to my most recent video.

    Enjoying your videos on recording and mixing with the Api Box 2. I just purchased one and should have it in a couple of weeks. Do you mind me asking the name of the desk/workstation that you use with it and where you got it? Thanks!

      hi, I'm so sorry. I haven't checked in on this account in a little while. Congratulations on your purchase! I got two side car racks from Zoar and the API is just on a table I had. I'm very curious about the desk by Buso that is actually made for this mixer. I would definitely point you towards them. And as luck would have it, they're having a 10% off Black Friday sale right now.

    nice gear man! really interesting to watch :) and interesting to see your process. thanks for sharing. You could get the LAAL limiter to go after the chandler curve bender to print the mix at the exact level you require. ? I want to get a fern D7 now!

      nice! i've since bought 2x 527 500 series comps that have output pots.... we'll see. I might use the ones built in on the board in the channels and put the 500 series on the mix bus. Although, I'm actually starting to appreciate the fact that not having output gain on the mixer compressor forces me to use safe gain staging lol 🤷🏼‍♂️

    Are you using the Fearn compressor & the Chandler Curvebender to Master this recording? Are you doing the mix like right into the mastering gear?

    • @hopetownsound
      @hopetownsound  ปีที่แล้ว

      yes I'm using this gear on my mix buss. although i keep levels safe when mixing and i wait until after its captured to do brickwall limiting

    Hiya love the channel. So I have quite a lot of outboard and run an Audient asp8024 console, I have found a great balance between a digital and analog workflow. More analog for tracking and more digital for mixing. I want to incorporate the analog more to my mixing workflow too. I always wonder though if you send a signal out of the consoles patchbay into a compressor and you have plugins on the track you are sending the treated signal to a compressor say. This isn’t always desirable. What do you do in these situations or what would you suggest? Or just work analog on those channels?😊

    • @hopetownsound
      @hopetownsound  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      compressors more than equalizers it really work better analog. I think it's fab filter that has a video about over sampling and how much more important it is with compression. it's just a bigger lift digitally and you can avoid all of that by just doing it analog.
      Oh, I will generally set up my channel kind of backwards. I'll start with doing everything I can analog and then if I still need to, do something more I'll start looking at plug-ins, but with very minimal use.
      once I really started mixing with all premium analog components, I was very surprised at how poorly even good plug-ins stood up against them. I have to be very careful that any given plug-in isn't actually making the signal feel smaller.
      I think I haven't found the right words yet, but it's a bit similar to what I was trying to say about the freedom and size of using the analog faders. plug-ins can exert more control in a certain way, but there's less dimension. And it's funny I have more control-obsessed clients who have specifically opted for plug-ins. A big three-dimensional analog sound can be a little unruly. It's a little like riding a tiger. You need excellent monitoring that you fully trust to make the most out of what analog has to offer and you really do need high-quality analog gear.
      It's surprises me how reluctant I've become to reach for plug-ins these days and I have tons of them because that's the way I used to work.
      to really embrace analog mixing, I had to let go of the need for absolute digital control/recall. I had to stop obsessing about what could be recalled perfectly, and just worry about what sounds best. My approach to recall now is obviously everything in the computer is saved but in terms of the analog equipment, if I have to put up a mix again I just perform it again. And I'm very clear with my clients that that's my process. If I do end up having to set up a mix again, I know the tracks so much better the second time, it's like going someplace you've already been, and the mix usually just gets better. This approach obviously won't work with everybody, and that's fine. If a given client is too obsessed with control we'll just mix in the box and use the analog stuff for summing. But it will be their loss.

    What a nice setup! Currently I'm all in the box, but want to work my way to a hybrid setup. Any advice on where to start with analog gear?

    • @hopetownsound
      @hopetownsound  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well... it aint cheap lol. I started by buying a few pieces, particularly stuff for the mix bus so you can be mixing in the box but run the mix out to some nice analog gear.
      you can also focus on having one really great "A" channel for vocals / overdubs. If you can afford it, 2 is better so you have stereo. It's well worth the money to spend on that one great channel. D.W. Fearn / Hazelrigg... etc. a distressor is probably the most flexible compressor you can buy. My vocal chain is DW FEARN pres, BAE 73 EQ, distrssor, audioscape Opto (GREAT value!) - altogether it's a lot of money, but it will never go out of style, it will never be obsolete, it'll last forever, it'll always sound great on everybody. That's worth the investment.
      I didn't go this way, but the easiest thing is probably to get a good full console. You also need a lot of channels of conversion to support it. in some cases, certain consoles have converters built in, like the SSL big six I believe. Honestly that unit looks like a really good deal. Something like 18 inputs and it actually has some EQ and compression that's worth using and it has the USB connection. The most important part is that a mixer has analog inserts, then it can grow with you as you pick up more gear.
      Audient mixers are very high-quality for a good price. Good luck!

    You gotta have the skills with analog more than digital for me anway. The same with cameras. Analog with less techy stuff with digital cameras that can interfere with things.
