You're reading that as being two separate things. You shall not make an idol and worship it as a false god, is the takeaway. Not "don't create representations of me... oh, and also don't worship them." It's no different than keeping a photograph of someone you loved who's passed on, and bringing that out periodically to remember how important they are to you. You're not loving the photograph as a replacement for the deceased loved one, are you? That would be weird. HUGE difference between an idol and a statue, painting, etc. And if you knew the language in which the scriptures were originally written, you'd realize how far off base that is.
