crying rn, my memory is so bad and this was so helpful! i was gasping and screaming throughout the video like i was watching a movie and going through these plot twists for the first time 😭 tysm, now i can go back to nona with at least some understanding because i was DONE trying to decipher it.
You're sincerely a really smart person. Understanding the locked tomb series with clarity requires an impressive amount of working brain cells. Please indulge us with Nona the ninth review, please please please!!!!
Thank you for this. Reading Nona the Ninth and I'm like "WTF is going on???" and I realized I have almost no memory of the 2nd, very strange, book. At least now I can contextualize it a bit more.
I just finished Harrow the Ninth so some of this is fresh in my memory. The pit/hell is called the stoma. I don't think it is said expressly but after several reveals about Nav surviving the 200 child massacre that birthed Harrow is due to her godly heritage. The Ortus/Gideon 1st/Pyrra bit was confusing. They said that repeatedly that the necromancer died and the cavalier Pyrra took over but the books never mention anything about the 2 having a special lyctor process. I definitely like Pyrra a lot, especially now that I am 50 pages or so into Nona the Ninth. I think that is one of the strongest parts of these books is the characters are all fantastic. Villain or protagonist, I enjoy them all and love many (Abigail, Magnus, Palamedes, Camilla, Ianthe, Dulcinea/Cynthrea and of course Nav and Harrow)
they did mention gideon the first having a special lyctor process. In the river, Pyrra tells Gideon Nav that Gideon the first figured out how to compartmentalize Pyrra and not consume her soul, but after some damage had already been done.
Great summary, I've just started Nona and this was very helpful as there's so much I don't remember and I'm not going to bother reading Gideon and Harrow again. Thank you so much for this.
Thank you so much for making this video! I was so confused when I finished Harrow the Ninth and thought I didn't know what was happening but you've reassured me that I actually did understand everything and that it was just STILL that confusing 😂
I gave Gideon a second chance last week and it went from a 2.5 star read to a 4 star read, but I am honestly loving this series more and more the longer I think about it. I immediately dove into Harrow (doing the audiobooks) and just finished that one... my brain is fried 🤣This recap definitely cleared some things up for me, this was soooo helpful!! I am truly in awe of Tamsyn Muir's imagination and storytelling abilities, this series is bonkers in the best way possible. Also, I adore the characters, can I get my own Gideon, please?! Thanks for making this video, I hope Nona lives up to your expectations. I am probably gonna dive straight into that one, because I *need* to know where things are going... even if I only understand half of what's going on, lmao 🤣🤍
Thanks for putting this together! Read the summaries multiple times and I still couldn’t piece it all together. Also great plug - Ruin of Kings is great, and definitely fits this more… creative style of fantasy!
Thanks for clarifying about the use of second pov. That's just wild🤯 This recap/explanation is super helpful. I have to take a break before jumping into Nona, I can't handle another mystery
@@Kristenisfullybookd Actually, according to Tamsyn Muir’s section at the end of the paperback of Gideon the Ninth titled, “A Little Explanation of Naming Systems,” which is followed by pronunciation guides for all of the sticky names, and the pronunciation guide in the back of Harrow, you’re pretty off. Someone told me that this section in Gideon was not in the hardcover (and maybe not the e-book… I read Nona as an e-book and there was no pronunciation guide), so I totally understand why you would pronounce names as your did, because I probably would, too (especially Augustine, which Tamsyn writes, “AWG-us-tin, not Awg-us-TEEN” … it was so hard to read it that way!). Also, it’s “Pal-AM-a-dees” (I can’t recall how you pronounced it exactly, but it is 4 syllables). I found the pronunciation guides both helpful and extremely annoying, because (especially with Augustine!) Tamsyn’s pronunciation of the names is just so different than what I would have guessed. Maybe in part because I’m American with a Mid-Atlantic accent and she has a New Zealand accent? The name that tripped me up the most and took forever for me to learn was Aiglamene, which is pronounced, “Eye-GLAM-en-ay”. I hope this is enlightening and doesn’t make you or anyone else feel bad. Just in case, I will here admit that I read the first THREE Harry Potter books thinking his friend’s name was pronounced “Her-ME-Oh-knee”. 🤦🏻♀
@@osofine23 hahaha, ya I definitely just go by how the audio narrator pronounces things. I'm not too stressed if I don't get the stress of the word right
Brilliant summary & wonderful delivery. If I might make a suggestion however, the reverb in your audio is making hearing you a little taxing and not without effort. It would be a big improvement if you had a microphone closer to you. (TH-camrs like Caleb Pike, Curtis Judd, Podcastage, Tom Buck, Booth Junkie, et al... have heaps of content on this stuff.) Regardless, thankyou for the recap. Looking forward to the next book. 😊
Thank you so much! I just finished barrow the ninth and I didn‘t understand so many things 😢. I was so annoyed with myself and the book and everything 😅. Now I feel better.
Thank you so much for this, i started nona the other day and 30 pages in felt like giving up, but this summs it all up nicely and isnt like 100 hours so it was really helpful, now i can go into nona with a bit more confidence, i know ill still be confused but apparently its part or what youre signing up for with this series lmao
I'm here to say thank you very much. I started reading Nona in English because I couldn’t find a translation into my native language, I got confused in this book... and only after your video I realized that Gideon and Harrow were translated terribly (official licensed translation!), they not only ruined the language and humor of the author, but they also terribly broke the plot by incorrectly translating or even throwing out some important parts. I'll order the original books and start over.
Wow...and thank you for clearing ALL that up. i truly appreciate the time and effort you put in to decipher, dissect and reanimate the first 2 books. i'm currently listening to Nona the 9th and this REALLY brings things into focus....hence subscribed😍🤩🖖👍 i hope you have gotten to Nona the Ninth by now...took me a moment in my reading cue too. thank you 🙂😊
fantastic synopsis and analysis, thank you for that! however, I'm not sure if I missed it, but did you cover the whole "Battle in the Bubble" against The Sleeper?
Thank you for this video cause I'm on chapter 12 of harrow and I'm so confused I even skipped the last chapter of the recall to the previous book with Ortis as gideon cause it was passing me off how it was changing back and forth but now I understand more and ima back track
I listened to the audiobook when I could with divided attention, and although I got a decent grasp of the world and foreshadowing, I TOTALLY didn't clock that Gideon was narrating Harrows experience until you pointed it out. Omg? Really?
Yes! Listen again and you'll totally hear it now. There's a part early on when she's describing a part of the sword and then the narrator provides the correct word and it's SO perfectly Gideon in that moment
Hahahaha yesssssssssss. I feel like it takes a couple read through to really get a grip of thing and even then you're probably still missing Muir's full vision
I was hoping for a little more of a recap regarding Jon’s agenda. What were the resurrection beasts? What was the original resurrection exactly? Why doesn’t God do it more? Why do the stars rely on his existence? What are the lichters doing when they cull those worlds? Seriously, Harrow killed off several entire eco systems and I had no idea why. And so on. Jon’s agenda is a huge part of why the world operates as it does. I listened on audio book and that part flew over my head.
@@IaMSpeaks yeah, Alecto's ghost is attached to the sword the same way pals is attached to the jaw bone, so Harrow is genuinely seeing her. The locked tomb podcast has been super helpful unpicking it all! I think on my first listen I was confused about Alecto and Wake, and who was the Stranger and who was in Kitherias body.
Did you read the short story that was Tamsyn released between Harrow and Nona? Something about Gideon’s body being recovered and not decaying or something?
Was this the one from Judith's perspective following her, Cam, and Corona with BoE? If so, yes. I vaguely remember mentions of Gideon's body, I'll have to go back and have another pick through for more details
"thanergy or thalergy, one of the two" - gods, do i feel this
Thanatos means death, so I guess the first one 😊
@lololNskMaria but can't they like use both depending on the magic style they use? Or am i misremembering it

It helps having Taylor to talk things through with. Between the two of us we catch a lot and try to parse things together
Thanks so much! I picked up Nona and realized after the first chapter that I urgently need a refresher of the first two books 😄

So glad!
thank u so much for this!! i’ve just started reading the third and really felt like i needed a refresher since it’s been so long 😭 this was perfect!!

My stoner brain is so bad I was in shock listening to you even though I read both a few months ago…
I was thinking of rereading them, but I’m pretty sure I left both books confused so that is how I’ll start Nona 😂
I think that is 1000% valid for this series! Having read Nona now, I think it's safe to just go with the flow

stan Ianthe tho she feral
Ianthe is one of my favourite characters to have in a scene. Her dialogue is always just so funny, especially the way Moira Quirk narrates
Probably should've watched this video or re-read Gideon and Harrow before reading Nona, but this video helps even after reading Nona.
Saving this for when I finally read Gideon the Ninth and then inevitably put of the sequels and need a refresher 😂

Do we know if Harrow is actually seeing The Body (Alecto), if she's hallucinating it, or if it was all an invention of her brain post-procedure?
