    I love Brian's breakdowns. As someone who is only an occasional novice in the FGC, he adds so much more context for me to really enjoy moments and events.

    • @JCintheBCC
      @JCintheBCC 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Games add so many rules that most of don't know about. No one has to explain a touchdown catch by breaking down exactly why the human wrist doesn't rotate like that. For better or worse, I feel like there is a bigger delta between watching FGC games with/without direct experience than, for example, watching basketball with/without direct experience.

    • @davethedoledi
      @davethedoledi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly Merro, I was about to comment a very similar sentiment but you captured it perfectly. I would watch breakdowns like this all day because a lot of this context would be lost on me too.

    I'm a complete Fighting game amateur. Never got further than playing Street Fighter 4 as a drinking game with friends at University. I recognise the frustration you have at people not understanding the pressure in high level situations. I used to get frustrated at people all the time spectating Magic the Gathering games and going "all he had to do was play the cards in his hand, that wasn't hype", completely missing that there's hundreds of layers of interactions, and decisions being made that they don't even realise they can't see, and appreciate. I love watching your content. Get hype, its fun to watch. Just felt the need to comment to show that not everyone on TH-cam is a grumpy scrub. Some of us are positive scrubs, we're just quieter.

    Okay, I'm a pure fighting game spectator. I watch tons of fighting games, not just SFV. Games like T7, DBFZ, MK11, SC6, GGST etc. I watch so many games but never in my many hours of watching have I said "oh yeah, I could have done that shit!". I know I couldn't, because of the context of being on stream and being on camera makes things different. Context matters and people take it for granted that the pro's just win and we don't see the grind to get there.

      This is the kind of attitude I think you only grow, when you have a certain level of familiarity in the game. It's what I call the "Gold Rank Fever," a mental state where you only know enough to think you understand. To an outsider or beginner on bronze rank, you're not even in the right headspace to dismiss something like this, because you understand that the game is actually hard and competition can make even the simplest task an undertaking. When you're still figuring things out in silver, you understand exactly how difficult these situations are, because you're still struggling and regularly failing in these moments.
      When you get to Gold/Platinum, you're getting deep into the grind. You're getting high on those explosive improvement-spikes, you're beginning to read frame data, listen to strategy breakdowns and lab in training mode with more intent and you're beginning to feel a sense of accomplishment for climbing ranks and taking wins. To some, this feeling gets in their head. They think that because they know the numbers and know the matchup and maybe have labbed similar situations in a vaccuum, they now have a full understanding of the situation. They've seen the Mariana Trench from the surface, but claim it's "Not that deep," because they've walked 7 miles before and know how long that is.
      This isn't a dig against all Gold/Platinum players, nor am I saying people in Bronze or even Warlord couldn't have these attitudes. More that it's in that intermediate, middle of the road spot, where you begin to have these kinds of thought-processes for the first time.

      So I hate this game, as it's a symptom of a bigger issue. It was made slower and easier, and Crapcom admitted that early on. To make it "more accessible" to a wider audience. This dumbing down and simplification makes things weaker and far less interesting.

In my mind he blocked 2 mixups that would have killed him and then manually timed a 4F punish for the win that would get him killed if he failed..... and everything was in the context of a high pressure situation. Agree 100% percent, the context of those examples you gave is the pressure, and that can be the difference between winning and losing. Some guys are great at the gym, absolute killers, but then can barely do a basic submission in a tournament, or amateur fight, granted as you get used to the main stage, it helps, but any added pressure is potentially negative for most of us (there are some who seem to do better the more pressure they're under, but they're rare). Even seasoned professionals lose a bit of an edge (ring rust) despite constantly training and my guess is it's because of pressure: the audience, the stakes, etc. I'm out of the SFV loop, but this was a great breakdown of that moment.

    Your breakdown of why that moment was intense is fire. The fact that Mena had to block that mix with a pixel of life was godlike. And when you see Mena's reaction that should've been enough for the guys who are hating and underrating that moment. I hope those guys understand where you are coming from now and that you weren't over hyping the moment. I'm a badass in the fgc. Playing multiple fighting games Injustice 2 MK11 Dragonball SFV and now I'm learning GGS, and l definitely cosign your breakdown. There's a lot of technicality to these games. The academic yes but also the real life application of the academic. And those are two totally different things. Then on top of that you have the next level where you are fighting pros in do or die situations. I've played pros and got my ass handed to me because the stress level is different.... Period. Performing what you do all the time in regular sets and in practice mode is one thing, but change that environment and it's gonna feel extremely different. Hats off to your breakdown and hats off to Mena for pulling that intense win off. The Hype is real sir.

I get the frame specific punish menlard but maybe I just been desensitized from previous sf hype moments that required 1 frame link to feel a 2 frame be all that hype. If anything people should be "proud" of the lard ass but not make it a hype moment, justin wong winning another marvel tourney and doing a barrel roll for his win pose is more deserving.

    Appreciate the video.
    Though it brought up a more general topic I find interesting which is what makes a fighting game interesting and hype to watch without knowing any context?
    I'm not a SF guy. Never was because watching matches never felt super interesting for me. Admittedly, I have barely any idea how the game works. That's what made me wonder why I felt the hype and tension of the older Guilty Gear games despite me not knowing anything about the franchise (or the genre) at that time either.
    On that note: Thanks for the explanation since I didn't get the hype in this case as well.

    • @shion6218
      @shion6218 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Competitions are fun to watch. Fighting games also amplify the entertainment with visually appealing characters, moves, combos, backgrounds and effects. Also, if your watching a TH-cam video and the audience/casters are going crazy, that will contribute to “hype.” I think this question can be answered simply by self reflection. Just ask yourself while watching a hype moment, “why do I like this? What parts of this moment do I enjoy the most? Etc.”
      TLDR: Because watching people punch each other has been entertaining for a millennia.

    I love this video. I got back into SFV this week after kinda testing the waters... five years ago. (SF6 coming out soon and finding Smug's and yes your yt channel got me feeling it. Also right now you can actually play the DLC chars you haven't purchased so I don't have to essentially buy the game again to lab the majority of the roster, it was like 18-20 chars when I last played) SFV is actually one of two fighting games I've played online against other human beings. So I am REAL unfamiliar with this stuff. My first match was just a casual online. I'm a super bronze rank at this point (I actually leagued down today lol) for context. Set was nice, the matchmaking put me up against someone right in my skill level. It ended final round where if my opponent landed a jump-in combo I would have died, but I AA'd, counter hit the landing for an easy BnB combo, and won the set. I suck at anti-airs, like real bad. I play Chun-Li just so I can have three great and easy anti-air options (and I think she's cool) and I still can't pull any of them off. I can block jump-ins fine but you know that leads to just having to deal with pressure so AA is a fundamental skill I'm really trying to work on. I popped off! I finally did it and in a "crucial" moment. I've been grinding hard since I'm kinda hooked
    So yeah TL,DR: I agree about context thanks for the vid you're doing fine work sir

    I did enjoy the video and it illustrates a great point. Especially for me, someone who is in practice mode way too long for his own good instead of just getting real matches in.
    When I go online, 80% of the shit I just practiced is gone so I'm glad for the 20% that stick.
    Those are just casuals though, so I can't imagine how much more difficult it is to hit it in an important moment.

      @@heraclitu-s I think the problem is that you only build enough charge a little bit after the df.Hk ends (df.HK is 37 frames total, super needs 40 to charge). So if you try to time the super with red bar, you won't have enough charge and you'll get a punch normal instead. This was my main problem when I failed a measly 29 times out 30 attempts.
