Hello my friends. Have a great month.
Here is a video I wanted to do for a very long time. A cover to one of my favorite guitarists,one my heroes. Mr Jason Becker.

People use the word genius way too often. "Oh Ed Sheeran he is a genius" "Oh Kanie West is a genius" No friends, Jason Becker IS a genius! To believe the guy wrote something like this at age 17 is... beyond human! This is why WE ARE METAL FOR LIFE!!!!!! Amazing performance Gus Drax!! All hats off!!! John Sutton. Your reply is one of the lamest replies I have ever read in my entire life. To claim Kanye West is a genius is an insult to all real musicians. However, if you want to significantly lower the bar, which is obviously the only way to validate your argument, then you might be right .... I guess he's a pure genius at what he does lol I can't even get myself to type Kanye West is a genius without laughing. You're just regurgitating what the media and public say about Kanye West.
Oh and I listen to all music. House music is among my favourite to listen to so your argument about being boxed in rock/metal is invalid. To think that you actually made any sense in your argument is for similar laymen who agree with you and just regurgitate what they hear. People are sheep and so are you ... congratulations.

It's harder to imagine a human actually playing this. My hand aches watching this video. The day I found out I couldn't play Mortal Combat on my Super NES, I knew my guitar shredding days would never occur. It comforts me to know that there is one thing no robot will ever be able to replicate.
This was composed by a human at the age of 18.
EDIT: True, he was 15 or 16 when he composed and played this. Just how...

And it's so heartbreaking that the very same human can't even move his fingers today let alone play guitar.
we need to be thankful though that he has miraculously survived and his music career still thrives as a composer!

I dont know. This part makes me feel so happy and strong. I cant describe the way this song makes me feel. It is like someone singing. Maybe theres a certain feeling for each person. For me it is something special in my life.

The best part of this movie is fact, that in 7 years noone has ever made any better cover on youtube. I keep coming back to this movie every couple months, and trying to find any good covers of Altitudes, but there isn't even one close to be that good.

Jason is the bridge between technical and feel players. Shredding sometimes gets a little boring, so take some time to get into The Blues, then transfer that
David Major Dude you're so right. A lot of shredding has no feel, no soul. Becker really did it better than anyone. Yngwie, who I greatly admire, does a lot of mindless shredding too.
Sadly, Blues is always boring. I would play or listen to classical music any day over Blues.
Yeah, and when I heard "A Little Ain't Enough" - David Lee Roth...I was very happy that JB not doing only shredd!
He is incredible in that album, really show his feeling in guitar, and that he could play "EVERYTHING"

@@ashutoshgoit9540 It's not always boring if you listen to the right guys. There are boring folks in every genre and it depends on your taste how you like them. For example SRV can play really tasty blues but there are also times it sounds boring. Steve Vai can also play really tasty but sometimes goes over the top with his shred. I find classical pretty boring sometimes but there are also classical players that really stand out.

I've never seen nor heard anyone play the passage between 1:57 and 2:28 with as much clarity, precision, or passion as you. It's a beautiful performance of a beautiful piece. Keep up the great work!

Xavier Xerxes yes he’s really killing it but that arpeggio should be broken into two shapes with a P slide up to the A to descend, it adds just a little more difficulty and authenticity to the phrase and is the way JB played it, check out the Jeff Loomis version and you will see what I mean, I’ve got 35 years under my belt, shredder for life, I transcribed 3 tracks from Perpetual Burn in ‘94 for some of my students so I’m not cutting him down he’s really good and I’m sure he has the chops to make the correction if he so desires

Dude I've been coming back to this video for years now, I've always been a big fan of Jason Becker and this is by far the best and highest quality cover and mix I've found ever. Hats of to you for being able to play this amazing piece of music, and thanks for sharing it with the world!

This is just like a remastered version my goodness
I have been playing for 30 years and seen and heard alot. This is up there is the top 5 of the best covers I have ever heard (you are up there with Jeff Loomis - Perptual Burn and Dr. Viossy - The best of times). Nothing less than a stunning cover of this unbelievable song. GREAT job man.
I just recently found Richie Allen on here and his version of Altitudes is just about as good but I still like Gus better!

I've only recently learned about Becker and his tragic story. Once I heard Altitudes I can't stop listening to it. One of the most amazing tunes I've ever heard. I'm working on the sweep section, and the 2nd (clean) section. Gotta be honest, this is the best cover I've seen of this tune. Great job man! I hope to play it like this as well some day. We were robbed of a great musical mind and musician when Becker got sick.

Hands down the best guitar cover I've ever seen on TH-cam. I never thought anybody could actually cover this song perfectly but this one when I close my eyes and heard it, I felt it was Jason playing and it got me teared up. Great work man! This cover made my day!

That slight smile at 1:56 always gives me chills. It's like he was waiting to cover altitudes his whole life and he knew that he could absolutely nail it. Mad respect for the cover Gus!
The key word here is dynamics. Dynamics determine the intention of each note and you sir, fucking nailed it. You played that song the way Jason meant it to be played, with balls in each bend, fucking gravy spilling out of every vibrato and goddamn character in each arpeggio. Bravo!

I've watched damn near every cover of altitudes on TH-cam and not one person seems to be able to nail that special vibrato that comes with Jason Beckers glorious playing, you my good sir are the closest I've seen to achieving that. I commend your talent dude, keep shredding.

There are some people on this video bad mouthing Tina S all because they think that Gus' version was the best that they've heard. Just stop with the bad mouthing! They both did such an amazing job and deserve credit. If you like Gus' version the best, that's fine, but there's not any reason to disrespect Tina like that. Gus did an excellent job, but they should give praise and support to Tina too. Sure there were a tiny bit of mistakes, but that doesn't make anyone a bad player at all. Even if she's made small mistakes before, she still always does an amazing job at her playing. You can't play perfectly in every performance because we're human. She play with plenty of feeling or at most a lot and if some people don't think so, at least she did her very best and played with as much musical feeling as she can. Recently, she's developing her playing abilities and getting even better. I'll always be proud of Tina and Gus and probably all of the commenters in the video should too.
Totally agree! Drax' cover is, as opposed to Tinas cover, absolutely perfect. But Tina is young. Having that in mind, her cover is just as impressive..

A lot of good things but I think what impressed me most was your timing and transitions. It’s incredibly tough to smoothly transitions from the sweep picking sections to the alternate picked sections and vice versa and you did it beautifully, bravo.

Gus is one of the best guitar players I have seen to present playing on the Internet. Amazing virtuoso technique. Jason Backer, John Petrucia can be happy to have a successor. I am not afraid to say that he may overtake them. I have been playing guitar for 30 years and I can't imagine achieving such a guitar technique. Gus, I'd like to see you play live sometimes. Robert
