As a Chinese who lives down under, I echo a lot of your feelings. There are so many things I miss, which I took for granted while back home. However, it doesn't mean that I'm living a miserable life. I guess you would agree with me on this. We all make decisions which consist of some compromise. I always say that you only have two hands. You can only hold on to that much. If you want to grab other stuffs, you have to let go something in your possession. So far, I luckily could follow my heart in making life decisions. I enjoy what's around me, but I keep asking myself what I want next. It might be in China. You never know. Aging is an interesting thing. It makes you realize some needs which had been masked in the past. OK, enough BS.

Yes life is good here and for me personally the benefits far outweigh the downsides . I think it’s impossible to move abroad and not miss something or another it’s human nature to be attached in some way to where we came from and it’s good to miss some things because it will make returning to the US like an exciting vacation 😝aside from being reunited with friends and family I can experience/eat/do all these things that I have been living without for two years 😝

Great content! Undoubtedely it is difficult to" forget" our own customs and habits, as each of us has been forged and raised in a specific environment from which we have assimilated many things that are part of us. Our country has had a strong influence on our formation, education, food..., but if we tried, when abroad, to balance a new life with our old way of living, we could certainly breathe the air of our home even in another country. Anyway I wish you to spend a nice period with your family and thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings about this topic.

I feel ridiculous admitting that I never realized the full extent of diversity and natural beauty of the Chinese countryside. Good that you will be able to spend some time at home soon with family and friends. At the end of the day based on the vibe of your videos it appears you are living your best life in China and I hope you don't encounter any problems returning "home" to China. I am looking forward to a break from the stares but then when it’s time to make a vlog I’ll miss it LOL

Living abroad gives another perspective. While I missed things, I replaced them with another things. Otherwise I would have made my life to a hell. I look now different on languages and culture, but most important I became more aware about the own culture. My culture has become a blend . So was it since humanity has traveled abroad for thousands of years.

When a Chinese sees a beautiful scenery the first thing come to his mind is building a pavilion so that he can enjoy it in comfort, with friends, having tea. An American, on the other hand, would want to pull down anything man-made and return it to nature.
It's the ideal from classic Chinese paintings vs. that of John Muir.

KTV is one of places that everyone is relaxed and show a different side of themselves. One thing I definitely agree on your video is the easy access to nature in US. People in US start to hike when they are still babies/toddlers/kids. IMO, it is a fortune for US people to have so many places to go during weekends and holidays. We are traveling in Washington state with our 1-year old daughter this week. Though she still cannot walk now, she absolutely enjoys herself in the baby carrier.

As a Chinese that had been living in the UK for ten years I am so grateful that finally someone has named something that was once so important in my life. Potato crisps was certainly one of them. You literally can find 20-30 different crisps in different flavours and finishes just in a local supermarket. I find salted or original my personal favourite but salt and vinegar a bit on the adventure side. Also dessert is something I can never manage to find a full replacement of in China. My favourite is definitely the sticky toffee pudding. That's something that keeps life going especially if you have a tough day. I also want to mention that two very elemental things - fresh milk and fresh juice. It is not that you couldn’t find these two things in China just you have to look for them hard and you still couldn’t find good quality ones easily with price on par even with UK.

Agree with you Katherine, me too here I realized I miss so many good things in US when I visiting back China. You know what I missed most? Toilet paper!! lol... and also I like the quieter public area -- the loud speaker repeatedly advertising in China supermarket or anyplace is extremely annoying...Also like the less crowded and less over-commercialized tourist attracting spot in US -- guess they did good job preventing such places being flooded/destroyed by overdevelopment. And now this is hugely important: there are plenty plenty (green) field for you to play soccer, baseball, basketball or tennis.. I'd say say US life style indeed is too comfortable.. but after all these being said, I still miss China life style a lot. China living style offers a lot different good experience. I think I'd probably go back home China after retired.

I do actually miss American local food a lot, as well as alcoholic beverages brewed in small bars, I have left US for 4 years, I love American people, i think American people deserve a better system. American people are generally very creative and friendly. Sometimes some of them are excited for fight and be confrontational. America is a wild beauty that is really unpolluted . I miss America too

Exactly! I always try to avoid junk foods for health reason but I missed junk foods a lot while I was away from the US. Especially, ice cream, potato chip, & variety cakes. I missed the East Coast winter. I was not born in the US but living in the US for most of my life. I wonder why salad, cream cheese mashed potato , pasta and the hand made pizza are my favorite and always craved for these food while away from the US. My stomach was not made by the US but appetite is totally Americanized! So I think I can totally understand what you were talking about. Food is not just the taste but also the memory.

Hi Katherine, I understand you 100%. First, a place is home only as good as the things you grew up with, friends, relatives and places of your earlier life. You really need to return to understand that there is reality back there. I did my uni in North Carolina decades ago and I have very fond memories of America and Americans. They are very nice people, nice (not good for you) food, and nice places as well. The people running the US are a different thing but ignore it. You should return visit, but hang on to your China re-entry. I hate to lose you because you have been wonderful person to bridge that gap between the two countries. I learned so much about China watching you from Oz here (I am not a China Chinese)

You said it right, it is in your DNA. I do appreciated the walking in the wilderness, the untouched version! Yet I think of the aged population and the physical challenged people, the intruded version seemed more accommodating to them; after all, they should be given a chance to enjoy the beauty of the nature!

There are lots of Christmas decorations and malls selling a lot of Christmas stuff in Singapore.
Not so much Halloween and for that, Disneyland in Shanghai is where I would go to to experience some of that vibe.

Chinese from Canada here. What you have described in what you missed in the US is mainly the white upper middle class lifestyle that’s diminishing not only in the US but in North America. I myself love everything you have mentioned but I can tell you that Christmas and New Years are not what it used to be compared to when I was a kid. Americans love thanksgiving and even thanksgiving is not celebrated with the same festive mood as before. I think you still can reach virgin natural floral and fauna if you are in the mid west or Vermont or Maine, but if you are in the inner cities of Los Angeles or New York, it would be quite a drive before you see nature without human footprints.
Your ideal white privileged lifestyle used to be the American dream of all immigrants coming to America. From the 1860s to 1990s, Chinese like my ancestors went to North America because they were poor labourers living in penury in China. If you were to go to the Chinatowns in those days, you would find Chinese people living in old decrepit buildings and generally in poor living conditions. As a kid, my white friends used to ask me if I would be going to camp during the summer holidays, I would be working in a restaurant earning extra money for the family because I could never afford to go to camp. A friend of my father’s graduated from an Ivy League university on the top of his class couldn’t get a job in his field so he ended up working as a restaurant manager. In the 50s, 60s, immigrants from Italy, Poland, Greece, Portugal, Germany, etc were employed in labour related work like construction, manufacturing, etc so they were better off than the Chinese. The Chinese have a proud history in North America with the lowest crime rates and highest contributions to society. But the living standards of the Chinese in North America never parallel those of the white immigrants never mind those of the established white people.
I see that you have a very good understanding of China, perhaps you would be interested in learning a bit about the Chinese in North America. I think you might discover that not everyone’s reality is the same.
You are an intelligent and brave young woman, if more Americans can learn more about China like you and more Chinese can learn more about America, I think the world would be much better.
Given today’s political climate, I think this mutual goodwill exchange is becoming less and less possible like the average immigrant reaching the American dream.

So you're a Vermont gal. I've was there 12 years ago while visiting a family who ever visited my city in Borneo. That was during winter. Packed my vegetarian food in a restaurant and surprised to find tempe available there before taking the Greyhound to New York which I heard so about in my younger days. Dream came true😇. Had the best Guinness Stout there in a 4th generation bar run by an Irish family. I remember the the table was made from a giant tree stump. You might have heard of it as it was a quite famous. That was the best stout I ever had in my life. Still drooling😋😋

I actually like the U.S. better with the open space after living here for so many decades. So I can understand how you feel. And you are right about the holiday atmosphere, especially when the malls were still the places to shop. But I am not sure how much longer malls will still be anywhere. I am sure you will have a wonderful time back to Virginia!

Some vloggers whom I follow, like Garcia Family and Oli (from Barret channel), have already left China owing to the homesickness. Would love to see you enjoy your life back home and show us around. One thing that we have here in Canada that in all my travels across the US I can’t seem to find. And that’s the camaraderie atmosphere of the Calgary Stampede. There are bigger and better funded rodeos in Midwest USA but they are all lacking in the bohemian Mardi gras let your hair all hang out festive feeling in what is normally conservative with both capital and small c’s Alberta. There are some really fantastic rodeos in the US but somehow I have this feeling that they are too large, too well organized, so big that creates an invisible distance in people. During the Calgary Stampede, it’s not unusual for totally strange women to grab you to dance with them on the streets.....yes, it’s true that they might be under the influence of too much moose milk but it’s that feeling of kinship and friendship that’s so warm and touching that’s rarely seen in the US. Besides Canada has some of the prettiest cowgirls in the world.
