- This song had its inspiration from several sources. One is a book by Patrick Harpur called The Philosophers Secrete Fire. It is a book about the imagination, specifically creative imagination. In it he talks about Genius loci, the genius (or spirit) of a place. Our ancestors thought that some hills, trees, rivers, and mountains were sacred and that they had their own personality and spirit to them. I really like this idea. So this is kind of a song about the Genius loci of Lake Superior.
The other thing was this memory I have of being up at Split Rock Light House many years ago, down by the shore. There was this girl there, and she was standing out on a rock in the lake, facing east playing on a ukulele. Just standing there in a dress, with long black hair hanging down strumming away. It was a beautiful summer day, and I thought she might have been a dream. I’ve wanted a ukulele ever since, but she was a haunting figure. Was she a siren of the lake calling to me? In my mind now she was out there quite a ways. I wonder.
But what happened is I sat down to write a song inspired by Lac Superior and this is what I got. I actually should be finger picking this song, but I hadn’t done it in a while so it was hard to do with all these changes with out sinking.
I was hanging around Superior’s shore
When I saw that beauty there once more
She was reaving along the coast as she went
Breaking the hearts in every town she left
(Chorus)
Blinds your eyes with her kiss
Wraps you in her arms of icy mist
So sing round the fire, forget about the gale
She’ll be fine tomorrow night when we sail
I wouldn’t let her get to your head
Her body is cold in that granite bed
And the glacier that left her there all alone
He’ll be back one day when the long summer’s gone
(Chorus)
Storms my eyes with her kiss
Wraps me in her arms of icy mist
So sing round the fire, forget about the gale
She’ll be fine tomorrow night when we sail
(Bridge)
I’ve seen the sun blush on her face
I’ve heard her whisper her song when her ice breaks
So take me on down, down to the shore
I saw her there once time, I’m gonna see her once more
The sun, it rises and she hasn’t warmed
Just a sullen look when she’s about to storm
And wearing the hues of sky up above
Just climb aboard friend and don’t dream about love
(Chorus)
Storms my eyes with her kiss
Wraps me in her arms of icy mist
So sing round the fire, forget about the gale
She’ll be fine tomorrow night when we sail
I’s hanging around Superior’s shore
I saw that beauty there once more
Wow! Not sure what else to say.. Nuff said. Peace friend.
