    I have not had any issues with the 8gig for music production or 4k video. I have the Air with the same specs as your pro. Like yourself, I have been going crazy with plugins in logic and no issues at all.

      are you recommending this over the Pro? I really want to save money so if I can do all I need on an Air, then I will go that route? (Production, recording, video editing)

    • @GearStuffandThings
      @GearStuffandThings 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@_SZNN I would over the Pro if you aren’t doing super heavy work loads with video sucks as RED or 6K stuff. Even with that being said 16gig would be fine if you stuck with the air. The only real differences between the pro and air in this lineup are the fans and Touch Bar. The Touch Bar is silly and the use of fans is almost not a thing if you arnt doing super heavy processing. I’ve had no issues at all. I do plan to get a 16gig Mini for heavier work loads :)

    Hi, what’s your recommended usb hub. Any preference. Thanks!

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi for the Apple M1 I do recommend grabbing the Belink Thunderbolt Dock Core(affiliate link): amzn.to/2SMNtoZ
      The reason is that this dock lets you charge your MacBookPro via the usb-c port on the Dock Core Hub. At the same time you can connect external display to it + Usb 3.0 gear.
      The reason I chose the Thunderbolt Dock Core hub, is because I need at least ONE free Thunderbolt port on the Macbook Pro 13" Apple M1 2020 to connect the UAD Apollo Twin X.
      I have some other hubs, but they don't support good USB 3.0 and usage of all these ports at the same time. So this hub is awesome! A bit pricey, but you get what you pay for in this case. I'll post a review video of it sometime.
      Hope the info helps!

      @@MattiasHolmgren Hi great thanks. It looks like a beast. Will look it up further. Btw it’s not powered right? Does that become an issue esp when it comes to high end audio devices like the UAD etc.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My advice is to always hook the UAD Apollo device directly to one of the Thunderbolt 4 ports on the MacBook Pro. And use the Belkin Thunderbolt hub for all other connections: power, external display, usb-3 discs, etc.
      You can power this hub via external Mac charger, it also further charge your Mac with up to 60W!

    • @accentontheoff
      @accentontheoff 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MattiasHolmgren My bad, so sorry, that’s what you meant. One port by itself always for the audio interface, which is the main device also. Guess that means that in the current MacBooks (with only two ports), everything else will have to go into the other port via usb hub.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are on a PC (x86) the RAM matters a lot so go for as much as you can afford. 16 GB is minimum. A laptop always behaves less performant than a desktop in my experience. Even though most orchestral libraries stream from disc these days you still need plenty of ram for all those multiple plugin instances etc. PC laptops can also be pretty noisy (fans), but I don't have any experience with the more recent pavilions...maybe check some reviews. Probably, because their plugins (NI) are not yet fully optimized for the arm64 / M1 instructions. You notice that when I open Vital synth too in this video. Fully native arm64 apps does not suffer the same way. NI need to optimize their gfx handling and release native arm64 builds of their apps. But I am glad they at least run so you can use them. 🌞

      Its all about optimizing the code for the platform. It can be troublesome, time consuming, depending on the api libraries the developer include when compiling their code. Some might work but is not truly optimized. There is quite the difference between x86 and arm64 instructions. But again, I am glad they at least work. good thing when using a lot of tracks with
    several vsti and also when using real-time fx on

      I am going to run tests on the M1 MAX 14" 32GB when it arrives in a few weeks to get a better solid answer to your question. But the 8GB 13" M1 already performs excellent! Never had a laptop this cool and with great performance. Love the M1 tech so far! Generally you always want as much RAM as possible to be future proof since it's not possible to upgrade internal memory, while you can always grab external discs for more disc space. Take that into consideration when selecting your next Mac. Thanks Benjamin.

      @@coose0 hey, yeah I got the M1 MAX 14" MacBook Pro yesterday, and I'm currently installning all software to begin the tests and prepare the comparison episodes. Yeah, like you mention most current videos are not even from music producers, but rather video editors who just load up Logic without knowing what to show / load and compare. LOL
      I'll be focusing on comparing performance between the M1 and M1 MAX, since, like you know, Intel isn't even close anymore. But I will probably throw in some intel comparison just because it's such a vast space between them. ,)
      What I can say for now, before any videos, is that I initially like the form factor of the original M1 before the M1 MAX 14". It has a brand new overall design and I've grown so accustomed to the light package of the 13" M1. Insane power in a small package. But M1 MAX will probably have a lot to compensate with regarding raw cpu power performance.
      The new keyboard is sleek and feels nice. The internal speakers of the M1 MAX does indeed sound much better than previous. FInally you can identify a little bit of bass.
      Loading projects and updating plugins (when installing new pluggs) in Logic is insanely fast on M1 MAX! ;)

      Kontakt uses disc streaming. That said, yes if you want to do mega big orchestral templates with 100 kontakt instances you will need more RAM. My intention with this video is to show that 8GB is totally enough for electronic music production and general music prod and audio tracking. The M1 tech has very smart memory handling and super fast mem access. An extremely capable and portable machine. Give it a try! Indeed I always install at least 64GB on my intel machines. 🥳

      I used the MBP 13" 8GB for about a year before upgrading to the M1 MAX 32GB. The 13" 8GB worked fine during the time and I produced a ton of tracks on it. If you have the budget go for a model with a larger display. The M1 MAX also have additional TB ports but I still have to use USB hubs no matter what laptop I use since I've got so much gear, cameras, external SSDs, synths etc. connected. The 13" 8 GB is a fine choice for any creative though.

      Hi, connecting your studio monitors to the the XLR / TELE output of your audio interface should not effect MacBook Pro performance in any way. They only thing that would effect MacBook Pro is when you connect / disconnect the USB cable from the audio interface to the computer. Because the computer will handle the connection / disconnection of a new peripheral device. Connecting tele / xlr cables back n forth to the audio interface will not effect performance of the audio interface. So I can't really see what the root of your problem could be. What Audio interface are you using?

    Thank you so much for the breakdown.
    Being on a budget constraint I am in a bit of a pickle.
    To future proof the M1 13' Pro, would you recommend going with 256gb memory and 16gb RAM or 526 GB memory and 8 gb RAM?
    My style of music takes up a mix of vocals, instruments and vsts like Kontakt, Vital etc.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I would suggest going for 512GB SSD & 8GB RAM. The 8GB RAM will take you very far. That said if you are really on a budget go for 256GB SSD and 16GB RAM, you an always extend the disc space with an external disc, but it's impossible to extend the internal memory. But as I said, I own the 8GB model and it's been totally enough this past year. And I do professional work in music, graphics, animation, videos, apps, games, web etc.
      Note: I just ordered the brand new 14" M1 Max with 1TB SSD, 32GB RAM which will ship in 3-4 weeks! Excited to do an update video comparing the first gen M1 against the brand new M1 Max. Stay tuned for a review. 🌞🎅

      8GB is perfectly fine for everyone. If you find you need more juice you're far better off buying a refurbished slave machine for 1/10th of the price of upgrading to 16gb ram. Also don't ever plan to use a laptop long term. Their useable life for production purposes is 5 years as you're more likely to buy the next iterations of the M1. Also it amazes me why people don't freeze audio tracks. Once you've made your composition freeze the track as there is really no need to run samplers or synth plugins live. Free the CPU.

      @@kehindea I noticed that some samples sound different especially with added effects like reverb or chain. So thos tends to discourage me from freezing them.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In Logic, make sure you have the advanced tools available in preferences. Right click a track, select Track headers. Tick ”Freeze” so its available to select on the tracks. Now you can click the freeze icon on whatever track you want to freeze and save up CPU. ;)

    Single core performance that equals or betters the Ryzen 5950x which is the best of x86 and faster than anything from Intel. Runs totally silent and cool which will ensure long life. Sips power at 18 watts total system power. And all this at a price point of, well, if you're buying the little Mac Mini you can get them as low as $599 from the Apple refurbished store, hmmm yeah I think you could say it's total game changer. You get better single core performance on this than the fastest Intel macs at the moment (the i7 2020 imac). Also a quick clarification about the Thunderbolt ports. Yes there are only two but each of those ports have a dedicated PCIe lane and each is on its own separate bus. This means 40gbps throughput per port for a total of 80gbps total. That's a hell of a lot better than the 27" 2020 iMacs which have two ports but only one bus so 40gbps total throughput. Great machines. There's never been this much performance at this price point. My M1 mini embarrasses my 27" 2020 iMac i7 for music production.

      Great note on the available throughput of the dual thunderbolt/USB-C ports!
      I second the price point! My previous mac cost around €3.800 when it was new. This M1 cost €1.600.
      Yes, the my intel MBP 2016 is 15" 16GB, and my M1 is 13" 8GB. BUT the M1 still outperforms the old intel mac. ;) I'm glad we finally can get macs at a more reasonable price.

      33x Channel EQ
      4x Overdrive / Dist / Guitar Amps
      1x Silver reverb
      I was just fooling around adding MUCH more stuff than I usually do. I would never layer this creazy with that lead melody (8x Alchemy tracks) it would just muddy up the lead sound and make things unclear in the mix.
