Shall I start buying new reissues? For example Tone Poet or Music Matters titles.

  • The topic for this video is the question I've been asking myself for a while; Shall I start buying new reissues from Tone Poet, Music Matters etc. to get some more stuff into the collection faster? And also, some titles are only available as new reissues, so that's a good reason. I've only focused on collecting original vintage 1st pressings for 13 years, but maybe it's time to explore some newly issued stuff. As usual it has to be in mono.
    Please leave some tips in the comments on what you guys think I should go for. What labels would you recommend? Which ones sounds the best? Is mono available and so on. I use the Miyajima 0.7mil dedicated mono cartridge for my vintage pressings and I'm hoping it will sound great on new mono reissues as well.
    Cheers!

    If it is the music you are interested in then reissues are the way to go. Especially with Blue Note. The reissues are better.

      I will probably not start buying reissues as I’m not sure my true mono cartridge can be used on newly pressed vinyl in a satisfactory way, plus I am an original pressing kind of guy so I’ll not be going down that route right now. We’ll see what happens in the future. 🤓

    For me personally, I think MM sounds excellent and I prefer buying 20 MM titles over 1 original. But everyone is different. Of course, you don't get the thrill of owning something rare if you are buying reissues.
    Reviewing reissues musically and sonically makes for interesting content even if everyone loves to see good looking originals.

      Hi Martin, I’ve scrapped the idea of buying reissues at this time. I’m an original pressing kind of guy for sure, so it’s all good. But maybe in the future. 🤓👍🏻

    Good luck jumping on the Tone Poet Series, too late, now too rare and expensive for the back issues.

    Fredrik, assuming your Ortofon arm is wired for stereo, and since it looks like it allows for removable headshells, setting up an alternate cart for modern pressings both mono and stereo would be relatively easy. You'd need to re-balance the arm when you switch but if you make a note of where the counterweight is with each cart you can make changing more effortless.
    I'm pretty sure all of Joe Harley's reissues (MM and TP) of recordings made after late '58 are stereo. From early '57 to late '58 he occasionally chooses mono but I believe most are stereo. (For pre-'57 of course everything is mono.) The only other consideration, addressed in my "Great Groove Width Mystery" post on my blog, is that modern reissues, mono and stereo alike, are cut to be played with a narrower 0.7-mil stylus. My guess is they'd sound fine with a 1-mil but modern pressings have slightly narrower grooves. So for modern mono, maybe a modern mono cart with a 0.7-mil stylus, and for stereo maybe a different stereo cart? Or a cart where you can swap styli?
    Also note that the Classic Records reissues are beautiful replicas of originals, mostly done in mono. I have found in my research that they were cut with slightly narrower grooves but are still above the original microgroove (mono) spec. The Japanese "Disk Union" mono reissues and the Analogue Productions 33 Mono Prestige series are cut by Kevin Gray and have grooves intended for use with modern 0.7-mil styli.
    I encourage you to explore modern pressings. Aside from the variety (I understand that your very high standards limit your acquisitions in addition to finances), you might find that you enjoy their greater general accuracy/detail/clarity/air on occasion. Blue Note claims they will repress all the TPs but many have gone without reprinting for years now. MM is done and almost universally costs $100+. AP is still reprinting the Prestige Mono reissues but they come infrequently and those second-hand are also $100+. Don't count out BN's Classic Series and OJCs!

      Hi Rich, thanks for the great info and tips! Much appreciated. I’ll stick with buying mono originals for now, as that’s still my thing. But maybe I will look at mounting an additional tonearm with a stereo cart at some point. I’ve switched to an 0.7mil Miyajima Zero recently (I found that piano sounds in the inner grooves on 60’s albums didn’t sound so good with the 1mil, I believe it sounds better now with the 0.7 mil) so maybe I can play modern mono reissues. It also says that for a fact on their webpage. But I’ll try and source some cheaper original titles to get some more stuff into the collection faster. Many of my most wanted are expensive ones so we’ll see what happens. 🤓👍🏻

      @dgmono ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fwrarejazzvinylcollector Oh wow I missed that, you have the 0.7-mil now, interesting! It doesn't surprise me that you prefer the 0.7 for handling inner groove distortion. Used records from that era are likely to have the upper wall of the groove worn from the wider styli used back then and it makes sense that a narrower stylus profile would be more effective. And now you can definitely play modern mono reissues, no questions asked (and technically stereo records are safe but will play back in mono).

    • @fwrarejazzvinylcollector
      @fwrarejazzvinylcollector  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dgmono Don’t think the grooves are worn, just that the 0.7mil traces the inner grooves a bit better maybe? Seems logical as the grooves get tighter packed together towards the center and a 1mil maybe gets squeezed there or something. I don’t know. It sounds better with the 0.7mil from what I can hear, but I think this is only evident on some 60’s pressings and during piano solos only.
      I cannot play stereo records with a Miyajima Zero, found this info in a lot of places and that’s what I’ve heard all along: “Miyajima mono cartridges are true mono designs, which means they have only one coil that operates in the lateral plane only. They have no vertical compliance and cannot therefore be used to play stereo records (to do so will cause damage to a stereo groove).”

    sure MANY topics i still not find out about : all about jazz LP´s. 1. there are so many different smaller labels and MATRIX infos never really can be googlet easily, if i look for first press. if you want SOME labels to decipher, what would be great. the UNKNOWN labels of jazz. 2. the LIBERTY BLUE NOTES have first presses on 2-3 versions usually. pressing place. "Side" or "SIDE" on a label etc etc, would be great to have ALL different things explaying on liberty pressing and IF they are all first press ? 3. that VERVE rainbow label around 1960. stereo. there are two versions. which is what ? and if DISCOGS showes both, which is FIRST PRESS ? 4. would be cool you can talk about SOUNENGINEER recording sound versus "best mastering". as my opinion is, that can not be a "better" sound in a reissue, if the recording sound/mix is already not great. sure BLUE NOTE is best recording sound with RVG. but there are 70´s 80´s recording sound, which not go well and sure need no reiusse, as it not gets better. only if you have the multi-track tape it perhaps gets better. 5. a video on CONTEMPORARY JAZZ RECORDS label and the stamper D1 D2 D3 infos. what years can that be ? cause they all "look" the same, with DG, stereo etc around 1960.

      Understood. I love Rudy too. I’m just curious how a newly pressed album of music recorded in the 50’s and 60’s would sound on my system. If I dig it, then it’s a great way to build the collection a bit faster and also get some titles that weren’t released back when they were recorded but are available in a proper package now.

    PS: there are many BLUE NOTE recordings, which not came out back in the day. you know that great japanese label World First Appearance ? i THINK they will sound great ! and IF a BLUE NOTE appears in first vinyl press like THE KICKER from B.HUTCHERSON, it makes sense to buy that. also possible is a concept like : if a FIRST PRESS would be more that 250 euro, get the REIUSSE with best sound/pressing. which as far as i know can be japanese pressings and the TONE POET / MUSIC MATTERS versions. i also have only 10 % reissues and 90 % first press. so i would say, IF i wanted the MUSIC .... sorry to admit, but i have that on CD. cause i am a jazz pianist and NEED the music to study, but can not pay 1000 or 2000 euro for a hank mobley first press. 🙂

      @@fwrarejazzvinylcollector The fact that they are cut with a stereo cutting head is not an issue. (It could be if the mastering engineer didn't know what they were doing but those cases are anecdotal). In fact, we can't be 100% sure that Rudy didn't cut mono LPs in the late '50s and early '60s with a stereo cutter!
