I just took my new 50 cc out for a neighborhood spin....loved it. Faster than a golf cart in this 55+ neighborhood, faster than my beloved pedal-powered mountain bike - great for getting around town. Looking forward to getting acclimated. Have been riding my mountain bike for conducting local errands for years and years - throw stuff into a back pack, but I'm getting a little old and creaky. Unbelievable! This year, I declared it non-operational and paid DMV only $38. I might sell it and buy an electric bicycle instead. Thanks for the nice video.
I'm 14 and in the US (Ohio to be specific of state) I can get a probationary moped license. I use an 80CC Bike motor which goes ~50 miles an hour. I might be getting an actual scooter from my grandparent's soo and I will have a license to cover that as well. I like taking long rides through my city and the 50cc scooter goes 35 mph which is more than enough for me to zip around from the grocery store to wherever else I need to get to, which isn't a lot of places but it's still good to have one on hand if the 80cc kit needs a little bit of work. I can get one from 400-~3500 dollars which is easy money and I'd be grateful to have an actual moped/scooter for commutes.
Oh yeah for sure, I certainly appreciate having mine just for short trips coz as you say it doesn't take long for it to pay itself off given how little fuel it uses
I've had a bunch of cars over the years but always kept a scooter as a backup vehicle.. then I relied solely on a Chinese scooter for about a year.. paid $400 for it and spent another $200 on a 72cc kit and a handful of other things. Does just fine in my city. Registration is $6, good for three years and insurance is another $100 a year. They're dirt cheap as far as transportation goes, especially if you do your own work. I've owned three Chinese scooters and have had generally good luck with them. My current one is nearing the 10kkm mark and 8k has been with the $70 bore kit. I recently decided to just get a 250cc motorcycle instead of getting another car but am tempted to hang onto the scooter. It isn't worth much at all but has been really reliable for me.. all I've really done since the rebuild is change the oil.. which it does burn a fair amount of. Pretty sure it's the rings which I can change out in about two hours but haven't bothered yet.
KiwiCarLife thanks. the only big issue is long distance trips. I know it's totally possible and that people do it but anything beyond 20 miles away is a bit of a chore and roads above 35mph get kinda sketchy.. with the bore kit and other mods, it'll hit the low 40s on flat. Hills can also be an issue, hence getting the motorcycle. Still, as local transportation they're great and the ease of parking can't be beat. It averages around 70mpg, the 250 is about the same there.
@@jseden Yeah and the reality is, most people when they buy a scooter, immediately start saving for a motorbike straight after they get it haha. Yearly registration in California for my tiny Honda Elite 110cc, a small scooter weighing only 250 pounds, is $135 a year. My mini van weighing about 4,500 pounds cost less to register than my scooter. No wonder scooters/motorcycles are not that popular in California, compared to Europe or Asia.
Depends on the speed limit. If the speed limit is 50-60 or less then definitely not, if its more than your scooter can achieve then its probably considerate to move over
To be honest, I haven't watched the video, but here's my opinion if anyone cares: ++You can have a license for scooters at a pretty young age ++the license as well as the scooter itself has a great price ++if you wanna ride bigger motorcycles later, this is a great preparation ++freedom, especially at such a young age ++Your fuel consumption is amazing --It is pretty slow --If you dont like being outside in rainy/windy/snowy/foggy/whatever weather, you should at least have an alternative. Hello, I am a 65 year old Canadian that has enjoyed ten trips to New Zealand over the decades. I normally come down for four months to escape our -40 c winters, I cycle tour NZ via peddle bike. While those decades of French fries and hamburgers took there toll....Heart attack, so my cycling touring days are over. Still can ride 60 kilometers every day, yet the stresses of mountain passes with a loaded touring bike are just too much. So my thoughts are a little 50 cc scooter and cheat death on the bike again. Looking at 75 kilometer days with a full size back pack. I am about 100 kilograms and maybe 20 kilo's in back pack. Can a little 49 cc scooter get me around New Zealand on the backroads I use to cycle both North and South Islands. Each year I would ride down East Coast of both Islands and back up the West Coasts, about 7,500 kilometers a year in New Zealand. It's the big hills that I use to push the bike up can a 50 cc scooter push up those grades with the weights I have described? .Up and over the Coromandel to Te Rerenga hill etc. I am not concerned about speed, I use to push the peddle bike over the hill ( heart is no longer strong enough to do that pushing for a hour straight) can the bikes power plant and transmission handle this? Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated, rethinking my mid age childhood.
I'm sure a 50cc could get you around, but I really wouldn't recommend it. You need to be moving at the same speed as traffic otherwise it'll be highly unsafe. And it'll take you ages to get anywhere
Hi, thanks for your video. I live in golden bay in the South Island and have the 2023 Suzuki UZ50. I’m looking to get a top box for additional storage and was just wondering what type you have on yours. Also was it compatible or did you have to tweak it around to get it to fit. Cheers
Yeah it'd probably be alright. Height wise you'll be fine, I'm 6'0 and had no issues. Obviously the more you weigh the slower it accelerates so it'll definitely be slower but not too bad.
You might be better off getting one with peddles on it mate. No seriously I am about 230 pounds and I have been checking mopeds lately and they usually seem to take weights of up to about 160 kilos or around 350 pounds.
That's understandable, that said 4 strokes get much better fuel consumption, you don't have to put oil in them all the time, and they are much cleaner for the environment. Also I rode a 2 stroke and didn't find it noticeably faster than my 4 stroke. However I can definitely agree that if you want as much speed and power as possible, 2 stroke is generally the way to go, but there is advantages to both sides
Have you considered derestricting your scooter? If so, did you use a specific youtube video to do it? Would it be easier to do it on a 2 stroke or 4 stroke scooter?
@@astrallarium It depends, an cheap chinese 4-stroke has a sensor which mesures the speed of the clutch bell to regulate top speed. Otherwise just get a new cdi/ecu. For 2-stroke it is more about removing physical restrictions, most of them have a restriction in the exhaust and in the variator. Otherwise you can get big-bore kits for both of these. If you want more speed and torque, get a 2-stroke If you want more efficiency and beter mileage, get a 4-stroke.
I'm considering buying a scooter. I'm in Christchurch, and I can buy a new Forza Ciclone 50cc for $1,600 and a new Suzuki UZ50 for $3,200 (both excluding 'on road costs'). Also considering a good second hand Honda Today 50cc, if one comes up on Trademe after I have the money available. There have been a few good, low mileage ones come up, $2,000 and $2,500, for what *appear* to be almost new scooters. I think I'm leaning towards the Suzuki. It's a well-known brand with a good reputation. And I am trusting my life to it. Also, I think it's a better looking machine, but that's a minor thing. Did you consider the Forza? If so, why did you decide on the Suzuki? I get it. They are slow. But I've been cycling a lot to save petrol, and it will still be a huge step up from that. Much quicker and less tiring.
4 28 years I have a 49cc Honda gyro tg50. 9k miles Does 40 tops .. still running strong. On fun days I'll ride up to 300mile . I have 12 cars 5 scooters.
Thank u very much fr the video....I’m a kiwi living in Australia and I wrk in a rainforest retreat and there is only one road in n out but this road is long and curved like an old granny spine....so does your 50cc go ok up hills
So if they’re restricted to 50km an hour and most roads in Australia are 60, wouldn’t it just be better to remove the cap? Or is it not allowed and everyone will just hate me
Hi, I’m from uk London, I’m looking for a short term ride until I can get a car, Walked too much hate it now. I can’t stand the public transport anymore the buses are so stuffy, I patiently waited but it’s killing me, I’m looking for a ride, will buying 50cc scooter be convenient? Can I ride it with provisional license?
Wouldn't know about the laws in England sorry but I was at the same point. Didn't want to ride my bike everywhere or catch buses so I bought this and its been great - gives you so much more freedom
Say you live 8 miles from the nearest town.and 23 from the nearest big town. And the weather is a hundred +would you rather ride the scooter, walk,or ride your bicycle.
I mean, half of asias intercity traffic works on scooters, mostly 50s and 125s... So obviously they 'work'. Also you dont have to buy new unless you really can afford it, ive owned three by now, they cost me, i think 1200 bucks total. My brother bought a cheap new one for 900.
Yeah for sure I've heard they're definitely popular in Asia. And of course you don't have to buy new and I'd probably recommended you don't tbh- I only did because I expected to keep it a long time because I was planning to go to uni. However I canned that idea so only had it 2 years
@@1waynj927 Hmm no idea tbh, I heard something about how you can ride a 50cc at 15 below 25mph and I think you can ride a 125cc at 17? Not really sure though. There must be a website that tells you?
Registration is way more than $26. Maybe because you don't live in California. I paid $250 for my registration for my Suzuki. Bergman four hundred cc 2022 year
I wil be getting a 50 for making deliveries. my area is in a 200 year old town so there are stop signs every 50 feet so performance isnt an issue. BUT i do have several hills. I will have a bug bore kit installed. just so the hills wont slow me down. 50 bucks to double the power is just to good to pass up :). there is also no parking were I live or it is pay to park. and a 50 gives me more options to park. it will alow me to get closer to my deliveries buy a few blocks and time is money.
you dont need insurance or even a motorcycle license for one in my state. thats the biggest appeal of it. you can get a decent one for about 1200 bucks, and youre ready to go.
It's also a high-end bike. It's not a cheap Chinese scooter. You pay for what you get Suzuki, Honda. Some of those are going for pricey, like three thousand dollars
Buy a used 49cc that is broken and replace the engine and cut with a 150cc gy6. After some mild fabrication of new mounts you would have a much better performing machine. Climbing hills and keeping up with the traffic won't be any problem. You still must understand that the upgraded version isn't a stable high speed vehicle! It will be much faster but it's not something you drive onto the freeway because it is not a stable handling bike at higher speed.
Curious on the leaning three wheeler, I looked it up and it said it could be driven with a UK license, do you know if this also applies with US driver licenses and if so where is the best place to buy one?
Im in NJ but in most states it doesnt matter two wheels or three if its 50cc and under a regular car license will do in NJ if its more than 50cc than you can get a trike endorsement but you can only drive trikes with that not a motorcycle
A good to see you're keen - hopefully this video has already answered that question, unless you mean like where to get one from - I got mine from scooterazzi in wellington, NZ, but any suzuki motorcycle shop should sell them. Only need a car licence, helmet, and $2500 to get one new so pretty easy really - great way to get around while on ya learners!
@@yo_asian_boi1424 I'm in welly so I've ridden up a fair share of hills! It's certainly not fast up them, but it's good enough. If it's really steep I just move over to the side and it's easy enough for people to get past. If you watch some of my other videos, it'll give you an idea of how it goes up and down hills
I don't think they are worth it new but if you can get one for cheap it sounds great, there is tons of cheap ones here, you don't need any kind of licence to drive them but you are limited to 25km/h some people choose to modify them and make them go to higher speed but that is not legal
I see, yeah I'd probably recommend getting a used one as well to save some dough - here though they're able to go up to 50km/h but most can do closer to 60 or 70
@@riding_4_fun185 Ahh I see. Yeah most of ours are limited to about 50, so most people just get the limiter removed so they can do like 70-80. Makes sense really because being stuck at 50 all the time can be dangerous if you have to go on an 80k road to get to work or something.
@@KiwiCarLife Well at least our scooters are a bit cheaper. I bought one from new on thansen.dk for around 1.400$ but there is still some scotters there are more expensive for like 2k

I wish we could bring these on highways without a motorcycle license + insurance, would solve the problem so many poor folk face when trying to get commute.
Here you can, dunno what the rules are where you are tho...
Oh wow that's pretty insane
But good luck with insurance, and finding parking as well as traffic
With fuel at 6+ dollars a gallon, I bet that scooters are popular now!
@@scottbrown7415 Scooters are more economical for short errands than maintaining a second car. Everyone should buy one now before prices increase.

It’s got sunglasses built in
If you go on a main rode do you have to drive to the side?
Depends on the speed limit. If the speed limit is 50-60 or less then definitely not, if its more than your scooter can achieve then its probably considerate to move over
KiwiCarLife okay thanks
Wait, is that Mt Wellington in the background?
Nah that’s in Auckland. I’m in Wellington
This is a great video.
Cheers man!
To be honest, I haven't watched the video, but here's my opinion if anyone cares:
++You can have a license for scooters at a pretty young age
++the license as well as the scooter itself has a great price
++if you wanna ride bigger motorcycles later, this is a great preparation
++freedom, especially at such a young age
++Your fuel consumption is amazing
--It is pretty slow
--If you dont like being outside in rainy/windy/snowy/foggy/whatever weather, you should at least have an alternative.
(Feel free to add advantages and disadvantages)
So basically what I said in the video?
@@KiwiCarLife Probably.
I just summed it up, I guess.

In Germany you buy the roller and only have to pay 54 € annually for insurance.
Nice
Shit hes riding around where i live! Awesome video bro
Yessss
Hi, thanks for your video. I live in golden bay in the South Island and have the 2023 Suzuki UZ50. I’m looking to get a top box for additional storage and was just wondering what type you have on yours. Also was it compatible or did you have to tweak it around to get it to fit.

I want to buy one just to cruise around my city and have a lil bit of fun lol but I'm 6'2 250 pounds... Is that good or I'm too heavy?
Yeah it'd probably be alright. Height wise you'll be fine, I'm 6'0 and had no issues. Obviously the more you weigh the slower it accelerates so it'll definitely be slower but not too bad.
@@KiwiCarLife Gotcha. Thanks for the fast reply man. I enjoyed your video and you have a new sub!!!

You might be better off getting one with peddles on it mate. No seriously I am about 230 pounds and I have been checking mopeds lately and they usually seem to take weights of up to about 160 kilos or around 350 pounds.

In nz you just need a car licence
@@KiwiCarLife oh wow u know anything about tx ?
If you get a 50cc, get a 2-stroke. They pack a lot more power in such a tiny packet.
If you want more speed and torque, get a 2-stroke
If you want more efficiency and beter mileage, get a 4-stroke.
I got a brand new trailmaster milano for work cause of gas prices, very nice ride so far

I bought one for 1400 it's perfect I love it can't wait to put a radio in it got a 50 cc amigo
Yeah man it'll be ideal
Here in Michigan U.S. we can only get one with max speed of 30 mph or else it’s considered a motorcycle
Sounds similar to our rules. Here it's no more than 50cc's and they tend to top out around 50km/h anyway
Is it illegal to de-restrict a 50cc moped in NZ?
Technically but no one checks
Suzuki is just a much nicer 4 stroke scooter
@@KiwiCarLife thanks :-) You helped me decide. I will go for the Suzuki in a few weeks. Thanks

I got a pgo hot 50 the most sold moped in denmark ever and I got it used for about 270 dollars
It's also a high-end bike. It's not a cheap Chinese scooter. You pay for what you get Suzuki, Honda. Some of those are going for pricey, like three thousand dollars
Is it Automatic transmission?
Yes
Buy a used 49cc that is broken and replace the engine and cut with a 150cc gy6.
After some mild fabrication of new mounts you would have a much better performing machine. Climbing hills and keeping up with the traffic won't be any problem. You still must understand that the upgraded version isn't a stable high speed vehicle! It will be much faster but it's not something you drive onto the freeway because it is not a stable handling bike at higher speed.

U don’t nee a restriction on a scooter

In most states if not all it requires a motorcycle endorsement because it is less than 4 wheels and operated like a motorcycle.
Im in NJ but in most states it doesnt matter two wheels or three if its 50cc and under a regular car license will do in NJ if its more than 50cc than you can get a trike endorsement but you can only drive trikes with that not a motorcycle
