- We have had our GE bottom freezer about a year. At 6 months the water filter light came on. We pressed the filter button, and it went off. At 1 year it came on again. We figured it would just turn off again, but it did not. Also, the water flow from the fridge dropped as did the ice making flow.
So, we purchased the water filter XWFE which is the recommended replacement filter for this unit.
These filters are available at the box stores that sell GE appliances on line or where we purchased it Parkers Appliances.
Installation time was quick and easy. I recommend that after placing the new filter run water through the door and the first batch of ice cubes may have some dis -coloration from the new filter. What is nice is 12 hours later the ice cubes are being made quicker and the water flow from the door has improved.

So glad you changed the xwfe type filter. I actually put in the filter bypass, that GE sent me free, my water is already filtered for the whole house. The instructions were still applicable, just had to pay attention to the holes on the filter coming out to see how to place the bypass, which has the same holes. (one is larger that the other.)

We just had to replace our filter. We have well water and got a slug of sand. Water in the door was really slow and ice cubes were few.
Glad you bought the same fridge as me… this stresses me out, believe it or not… lol…first change will be Sept!
No worries. I would suggest that if the ice is not keeping up then change it. Otherwise push the red light until it turns off. It will give you another 6 months. But if you have any questions please ask.

Thank you for the video. After we changed the filter the water was not coming through. Held it for over 5 mins as it suggests to release trapped air. Any thoughts?

Sometimes the filter can be tricky to insert so I first would suggest taking the filter out again and reinsert it to make sure that it clicks. The other thing is is this filter that is called for or a knock off filter? If it a knock off filter, you will need the label off the old filter and place it on the knock off filter so the computer reads it. Please let us know how it turns out. What about running two gallons through after installation to clear out the water filler???
Hello! You could do that. But a couple quarts is really all you need. The time spent standing and waiting would seem very long and unless you use the water to water plants some what wasteful.
I do like that you are thinking outside the box!

My GE fridge have a strange noises every hour. And i just accidentally discovered when i press the button inside near the door in the left side, the strange sound is hearing. What is this sounds? Thnks
Hello! Is the ice maker on? This sounds as if the water is off and the ice maker is on. The solenoid is popping to draw water in. Please let us know if this helps.
