    Thank you for tis video. I have been watching a lot of your videos recently because I have been contemplating replacing an old outdoor fireplace that was more or less beyond repair. The fireplace is gone but I am not going to be replacing it because of the stability issues. I do not have easy access to recycled class five so the fill is going to be native sand and since the fireplace I had planned and modeled would probably weigh close to 2000 ponds when complete I am just going to build a retaining wall and reclaim some land. I will probably plant grass next summer, while I am working on a smallish boulder retaining wall to level some ground next to this reclaimed area.
    I guess you could say that these first two walls - one retaining wall block and one boulder - are my test walls. My yard is a hill and I need to level it because it is a pain in the a$$ to mow and I do not want anyone else to have to deal with this hill.
    Take care.

    You do a great job explaining the whole job and do it very strong ... But one question... Why do you not use polymeric sand in the joints ? Almost the most important part.. keeps water out and locks them in .. prevents weeds also... Sand won't

    • @Dirtmonkey
      @Dirtmonkey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Poly sand is good but doesn't last forever. maybe a few extra years at best- then you have to scrape it out to redo it. Thats almost as much work as just doing good maintenenace practices

    • @MrChristopoop
      @MrChristopoop 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Am doing that just now on a techo blok pacer patio around my pool. Poly sand is coming apart and peeling in spots. Digging it out and re applying while weather is still good to do so. Patio was done in 2017 (used Dirt Monkey methods for my base layers, as well as concrete sand and compaction of it all).

    @tito1014 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm a professional, 20 yrs. Spend the money and build it solid block, first layer, second, third, etc... unless you are using poly sand and if I say if that doesn't let any moisture in you will have problems in the future with freezing. Makes a difference, even using cut up old block., it leaves lots of space for expansion, throw a layer of mat on top of final layer and have 1/2" of sand to get to top of cap. The sand we get is a crushed quartz that has angular pieces in it to really lock the pavers together also. I hope you aren't using play sand. Think of it as ball bearings... love the videos.

  • @darrenturner2384

    Just wondering, when you have a paver patio on top of a retaining wall - since the pavers need to be sloped away from the structure for water runoff, but the retaining wall is placed level, how do you deal with that? Do you put a crown in the pavers? Or do you slope your retaining wall away from the house?

    Sometimes when I do paver steps or raised patios like this, I will not even use sand at all. Just road base(class 5) compacted right underneath the pavers. It takes way more time to level but you will not have out wash out on you. Ants are the biggest problem around where for sand.
