- Donald Trump has brought Greenland into the global spotlight. With a population of under 60,000, the U.S. President claims the island is essential for international security. But, his comments are sparking debate over geopolitical tensions and the stability of international borders. So, what's next for Greenland?
Joining Enda Brady for this discussion: Klaus Dodds , Professor of Geopolitics and Executive Dean for the School of Life Sciences and Environment at Royal Holloway; Elisabeth Braw, Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council; Jeppe Strandsbjerg,
Associate professor at Nasiffik, Center for Foreign & Security Policy at Ilisimatusarfik.

I think they would like the same relationship that American Samoa has. They retain a tribal government system and complete community ownership of land. If Greenland joins the U.S. as a territory, they have the complete choice in how the relationship is structured. They want independence yet are afraid they can't make it alone. But the U.S. offers the best of both worlds.
Also, something that people don't understand is that our Indian wars were more a civil war between mixed race and assimilated Indians against traditionalists. Ely Parker was a full blood Seneca Indian and Secretary of War during this conflict after having been Brigadier General in the U.S. Army. Yes, some Indians ended up on reservations, but they were put there by other Indians. I know that fact is inconvenient, but that is the truth. I am an enrolled Choctaw, we were very early assimilators having first encountered the Spanish in 1530. By the time of those Indian wars, we had been interbreeding and assimilating for 350 years, as were all of the Eastern tribes. This modern leftist narrative just isn’t reality. And even if it were, all of those issues were two centuries ago and no threat to the Inuit now. And in stark contrast, Denmark was sterilizing Inuit women into the 1970's. No, the Red Road was paved a long time ago.
I believe Greenland is pretty well covered being a member (Through Denmau) of NATO, and having representation in the Danish Parliament, while having acces to free healthcare, free education, social services etc. What is the US offering them other than drill, baby drill with environmental disasters.
There is some problems, according to the agreement about selling the Virgin Islands to the USA “The USA government recognizes Greenland will be the kingdom of Denmarks forevermore” signed by President Wilson ratified by super majority in US congress into la” only the same process can remove it and will cancel the sale of the Virgin Islands to the USA and not give US sovereignty over Greenland, also only 6% of Greenlanders said they wanted to be Americans in the most recent poll, which is not a US propaganda poll.
@@n.ringheim7720 Again with this false argument about "free" healthcare. How do you get healthcare to people that you haven’t even bothered to build roads for? Why this obsession with Soviet style healthcare?
All U.S. Jurisdictions have the healthcare system of their choosing. Some have universal systems, and some do not. As a territory or even state, Greenland could have whatever healthcare model that they choose.
What they are offering is security, and wealth. As well as the ability to make their own decisions. I live in Texas, do you think for one second that the federal government tells Texas what to do, absolutely not. We rule the government, not the other way. In the U.S., the power is in the people, not the central government.
@ Except that isn’t what Greenland wants. 80% want independence from Denmark and 60% want to join the U.S. and eventually that 60% will be 80% because it is the younger generation that wants to join the U.S.
@@richardscroggins2096 That is not true at all, I work and live in Greenland and we just had a vote here. 85% was anti USA and a bit more then 10% voted blank.
Trump is correct about security and NATO. Canada is a liability for U. S. security. I think it could be a win / win for Greenland & U.S.
Greenlanders could still remain Greenlanders and improve economy
& U.S. Benefit for security and resources !!
Only Trump can save the Greenlanders from a depressing frozen dystopian future. They were so overjoyed and full of hope when Don Jr. paid a visit to them. Their eyes lit up when they realized they were not alone in their plight to gain independence from tyrannous imperialistic Danish rule. We want Trump! We want Trump! I thought I heard them yell when Don Jr. arrived. Denmark let these Greenlanders go!
All foreigners talking about Greenland 🤣😂 Hilarious 😂
Greenlanders have a right to self-determination. Like the people of Kuwait. American invasion would be as unacceptable as the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. It's that simple.
There isn't going to be any "invasion." We've already been there for over 100 years. The only language people definitely DON'T speak in Greenland is Danish.
@wesdowner5636 I know, I know. You're going to give your invasion a fancy name like "special military operation". Or "operation Greeenland [not Iraqi] freedom." In case you don't realize, an invasion by any other name is still an invasion.
@ There won't be any invasion. In fact, the only people talking about invasion, war or the use of military force, are the Danes and the French.
Would like to see an ACTUAL Greenlander on the Panel.
There are articulate Greenlandic politicians with very good English, like Pele Broberg and Kuno Fencker.
I don’t think kuno’s party would be too happy having him speak on any program. He has been accused of nationally harmful activity for his rougue USA tour.
Kuno is currently being called a traitor by the majority of our population here. He is not doing well at all
There is no one person who can represent either Greenland or Denmark, because they are both extremely split in all directions politically.
Written from Denmark.
@@CarlMartin-hw3evtrue, but on these topics the majority pretty much agree.
Natural resources in Greenland worth at least 10 trillion of dollars. Not to mention strategic location. Everyone wants to own Greenland.
10 trillion? Not anytime soon. It would take a trillion in infrastructure investment to make any resource exploitation profitable.
So they want to be independent but are already very poor even with $500M annual subsidy?
Fact is Greenland is way too tiny and unable to be independent.
Correct. Time to take the 100% Independence fantasy off the table, and face reality instead.
The inuit in Greenland have ancestral ties to Canafa and Alaska. They need support to access to the outside world and its time they divorce Denmark and reunite with North America
there are direct flights to Canada and there will be to New York this summer , Greenland have international airports there aren't prisoners they can travel so you are writing nonsense, you could also argue that all Inuits in Alaska, Canada and Greenland originate in Siberia so they should all connect to Russia
@@veronicajensen7690 That is exactly what Russia and China's argument is, which is why Trump wants to buy Greenland. Get it ???
@@veronicajensen7690Uh, NO. Siberia is on the Eurasian continent, NOT North America.
When a country joins America as a state they do not lose their identity. They will always be Greenlanders the people will just be united as a state, with other 50 states. And have the backing and wealth of Federal Government, it will make Greenland safe and free. The Greenlanders will make their own laws and tradition, plus be protected by the US constitution.😊 The Greenlanders will gain power, strength, wealth and safety plus each Greenlander will make money off the oil and minerals mined from their state.
Hi. As a dane: One of my best friends worked for 10 years as a geologist in Greenland on the oil issue. So far nothing has been found that is worth extracting,..... My late mum was close to the former Greelandic prime minister too; believe me, he would have extracted oil with due considerations for safety if a large goldmine had been found....... So, what is it you americans know that the people of Greenland and skilled danish scientists aren't aware of. Mind you, Denmark is an oilextracting country too.
They would properly lose their Healthcare free at the point use and the American system is terrible, the worst in the developed world for equal access to healthcare because you have to spends lots of money as a citizen on it and if your poor you can't afford it!!!
@@nicenacFirst of all, you're wrong about the US health system. I'm on my way to the hospital RIGHT NOW and I have NO health insurance. Nevertheless, I'm going to get the best treatment they have to offer. And I say this as someone whose life was saved under the Japanese national health system. If I had to do that again, I'd prefer to do it in the US, NOT Japan, even though it only cost me $783 for 10 days in the hospital, and the same stay would've cost a couple thousand in the US. The US system is THAT much better.
Secondly, the Greenlanders would NOT lose their national healthcare. Whether they joined the US as a State or a territory or under a CoFA, they'd have their own government and they could have whatever healthcare system they wanted. We've had several States within the US implement State healthcare, including Massachusetts and Vermont. They both failed SPECTACULARLY, and they later had to go back to a normal healthcare system, but if national healthcare works for Greenland - and it seems to, probably because there are so few people there - they'd be perfectly free to keep it. What the l they'd get from us is access to the latest medical technology, and we'd probably go in and build brand new hospitals and clinics. But how they run their government is, and would be, THEIR business.
I don't know why anyone thinks that would change.
The Indian people in the United States are actually doing very well with their casinos.
Inuits in Alaska are doing OK, they should be the most comparable demographic segment.
@archerizeit7444 Good point. And their settlements across Alaska and Northern Canada did not entitle them to be the sole owners of all that land.
@@archerizeit7444but it’s not relevant according to US law, “the USA recognizes the kingdom of Denmark will own Greenland for evermore” signed by President Wilson ratified by a super majority in US congress, it will take the same process to remove it from US law, so Trump is full of misinformation, there is no discussion according to the US law Greenland is Denmarks forever, also removing the recognition from US law will cancel the sale of the Virgin Islands to the USA 😂 but it would still not make Greenland a part of the USA, only 6 % of Greenlanders want to be Americans according to a new poll, which is not a propaganda poll like they are used in the USA. We are never going to sell it and even if they one day can afford to become independent they definitely don’t want to become Americans 😂
Stop wasting your time on Greenland it will never happen you have a million problems you might be able to fix but Greenland will not get any positive results, you might be able to bully Colombian and Trump was morally right, countries can’t refuse to take back their citizens, you can tariff who ever you want but it will have consequences like no diabetes medicine for the 42 million Americans who have diabetes and no more container shipping services, oil tankers exporting all the light oil from fracking you can’t refine because of your crazy system, importing heavy crude oil for refining for the USA, which means economic collapse, US military with no supplies.
Also stop threatening Canada and Panama with Annexation everyone in the world will turn against you and your already one the brink of bankruptcy, when you are in big trouble smart Countries fix their problems by reforming their society, not by invading their neighbors and stealing their land, like Saddam Hussein, or Russia which has not won the war and will never get sanctions removed before they leave Ukraine, maybe we sanction medicine which Russia produces 0% imperialist aggression needs to have serious consequences
that really isn't the point, is it? It is all about minerals. Export from China of minerals has stop. Presidential before? Not in our lifetime.
Explain me, Danish support Taiwan's independent, but Greenland shouldn't be independent immediately. In term of culture, race, history, way of life.
???? not sure I understand 1. Denmark is not deciding Greenlands future Greenland can vote for independence when they want and the Danish parliament will support that ,that said Denmark do most work regarding Greenland because they don't have the human resources to do it themselves although they have the rights and are the ones deciding things -so it's difficult for them for the moment to be independent , although majority of Greenlanders want independence for most it's a future wish , majority won't vote yes to independence if they vote about it tomorrow -Denmark agree that Taiwan is part of China just like all UN countries
According to law the USA recognizes Denmark owns Greenland forever, Trump should de research instead of feelings, who cares what he thinks he can’t change the law without super majority in congress, and it would cancel the sale of the Virgin Islands to USA😂 and not give him Greenland, when where the last time the USA lost land?
I’m not completely sure I understand your question but let me try to answer anyway. Greenland can ask for complete independence and it will be granted - it is written in Danish law. The vast majority of Greenlanders wants to be independent. And all politicians in Denmark (and the Danish people) are in agreement that they shall have it the moment they ask. However, at the moment Denmark still contributes 50% of their budget along with providing education, courts, police, military, healthcare etc.
And that is the main reason it hasn’t happened yet. They still need to create a sustainable economy. Which is something they are actively working towards.
@@glastiger7598 yes , since the kingdom of Denmark are freaking out, I wonder why wouldn't Denmark welcome Americans to fill up this budgets. As far as I know when I was living in Denmark of the eight years, the danish government did not truly want an independence of Greenland. Here are some reasons that I believe that can help you to understand my questions.
Resource Control - Denmark has been involved in decisions about Greenland's natural resources, which are crucial for its economic viability. There have been concerns about Denmark’s role in restricting or influencing mining and energy policies.
Foreign Policy Constraints - Greenland’s strategic location has drawn interest from global powers (e.g., U.S. and China), but Denmark has maintained control over its international relations, limiting Greenland’s ability to negotiate independently.
Past Colonial Practices - Historically, Denmark implemented policies that suppressed Greenlandic culture and language, aiming for integration rather than fostering independence. Some argue that the lingering effects of this colonial relationship still impact Greenland’s political and economic landscape.
Let alone the even more disgusting history , such as forced sterilization, forced relocation onto the greenlanders.

The EU should increase military presence and mining in Greenland and unfortunately for the Greenlanders they can't be independent, for security reasons.
I didn’t vote for Trump but I do think people underestimate the analysis behind his calculations.
The realm of Denmark consists of three countries: The Faroe Islands, Greenland and Denmark proper. We are also talking about 3 different languages. One in 4 Greenlanders lives in Denmark and some on the Faroe Islands, many Faroe Islanders live in Denmark and in Greenland and many Danes live in both Greenland and the Faroe Islands. The idea about introducing yet a forth component into the equation really is utterly absurd! Absurd! Splitting families and subdue people to different legislations. An absolutely horrible idea! And a correction: the alcohol consumption in Greenland is lower that that of Denmark proper.
First off, this is fundamentally tied to the regional strategic security of North America and Western Civilization. No matter how much Greenland wants full autonomy as an independent nation, they simply lack the industry and capability to ensure the security of their island and its resources. The idea of achieving full autonomy while relying on others to build infrastructure and provide security is not a viable long-term strategy.
For the United States, any massive investment in Greenland’s security must ensure that the resources benefit the West, not foreign powers like China or Russia, whose interests conflict with ours. The reality is that a shift is coming, and Greenland has to decide who they want to shape their future-the Russians, the Chinese, or the United States.
The best path forward is autonomy under US territory status, governed by the protections of US Constitutional Law. That would guarantee them a stable, permanent free state. No other option offers the same long-term security and freedom. It’s a tough truth, but that’s the world we live in.
This is an excellent analysis of the situation.
USA does not need Greenland for security purposes because both Denmark and USA already are members of NATO. In addition and USA does already have a military base in Northern Greenland at Thule and the American base has been there for the last 70 years. So all American security needs and strategic military wishes have already been meet.... From the newspapers we can read how China is bullying its neighbours in South China Sea, so China is behaving like a gangster in Asia. The free world does not need a new gangster who is bullying its old allies in NATO, the free world does not need gangsters with imperialistic dreams who want to expand their borders with threaths and force..The sooner the new American administration is forgetting this idea of buying Greenland, the better it is, the better it is for everybody...Donald Trump has damaged NATO and the free world.....
Klaus Dodds sounds like a mouthpiece for Trump :P
There is nothing in U.S law that says states or territories can't offer free government run Healthcare or free post secondary education. That's a straw man fallacy.
Most people on Greenland speaks 3 languages and are more educated than an average American. Thanks to the free education Denmark provides. 😂
And they have also a free health care system.
I look forward to the day that Greenland becomes an independent sovereign nation that is a member of the UN and particularly has its own Olympic team. I think it would give the Inuit people a boost to be recognised as an indigenous nation!!! That decision is ultimately up to the people of Greenland to decide not anyone else and the Danish PM has been quite clear on that issue which Trump doesn't seem to get it into head!!!

Would greenlanders be willing to give up the strict environmental protections they have to have the US set the mining and drilling regulations to there level?
Would they be railroaded in governance in areas of interest to the US like militare and resources?
Best option for the greenlanders Would be there own country but how would they then cope without the help with finances they get from denmark today? What level of sacrifices are they willing to take on healthcare and education among a few?
Would being on their own make it even easier to take control over for the US no matter what the greenlanders themselves say?
Greenland is protected under Nato today and if Nato chooses to they can expand their presence so stating that as a reason is a red herring, they also have a 100% open market ekonomy so any corporation can apply to mine minerals and drill for oil/gas as long as they follow local rules and regulations so US corporations can do that today as they see fit same as any other countries corporations.
If US use force the EU will retaliate as a whole under the EU defence pact, will end up breaking up Nato for sure but the danes are not on their own in this so the global consequences for this is insane.

Also was it 0 soldiers the US lost in Greenland, in WW2 both Denmark and the USA had a big transport shipping fleet, unlike today where only Denmark has.
But when Denmark was invaded the global Danish merchant fleet mostly sailed to the USA and then it was impounded by the USA and the ships where used in the Atlantic convoy system where many ships where lost, I think think the crew was forced but volunteered and 2000 Danish sailors died in the Atlantic Ocean to German torpedos transporting weapons and supplies, soldiers to Europe. Yugoslavian civil war Clinton asked Denmark sent soldiers and leopard tanks which owned the Serbia attacks every time they tried, Afghanistan first and only time NATO article 5 used, Denmark sent soldiers and special forces most of the time in Helmand province with the British, Denmark per capita person of any country also the USA had the highest deaths, the USA was also in the worst places and took heavy losses but was spread all over the country and the average was low, Almost all other countries instead of being only deployed in the north where the Pashtun people was few and Taliban weak.
US lied about WMD and Denmark came to Iraq on US requests and with the British defense Basra Shia city in southern Iraq, less crazy than Helmand but still many IED deaths, Libya where Obama wanted Europe to take the biggest responsibility and Denmark sent our best F-16 pilots which had the highest hit rates in the war, because USA has stopped building supply ships in ww2 because they had so many they never restarted the industry and in 1984 the US military needed some serious supplies instead of ww2 ships so in 1984 until now all shipping services to the US federal government and military globally have been delivered by Danish owned Maersk line limited so all US wars since then and base has been supplied by danish owed ships, but the USA occupation of Greenland, which cost no US losses, denied most German whether stations fast, and gave allies good weather forecasts, only a Danish soldier in the dog sled patrol Korporal Eli Knudsen was killed in a German ambush by accident with machine gun fire on the dogs also killed Eli the two others one the patrol was taken prisoner, what would have happened if the US hadn’t followed the Danish ambassador to the USAs invitation to temporarily occupy Greenland, not much the Germans would have had better whether report the alliance whose less knowledge about German submarine activity and most likely the allies had still won an maybe no American bases on Greenland, if Germany had won Denmark would most likely get back sovereignty over Greenland and lifted the German occupation, Germany and Denmark have unlike most neighbors of Germany settled out territorial disputes, not even the Nazis could find any agreement for our peace where not just, after ww1 France wanted Germany as weak as possible so they gave Denmark all lost land back from 1864 defeat to Prussia and several other nations city states, despite Denmark being neutral in the war, but Denmark had totally changed after the war and we didn’t want to rule over our neighbors only danish speakers no more expansion, so instead we had focused our resources on education and infrastructure and a good defensive military in the ww1 and diplomacy, but isn’t of welcoming northern Germany and southern Jutland back in the kingdom as France wanted we divide the land into many voting regions after what we guessed the ethnic lines where and held a free and fair elections, Germany or Denmark Two choices, the vote turned out to be as expected all German majority regions voted for Germany and all Danish voters for Denmark and we gave Germany the land and have no territorial disputes with our neighbors, except for Canada some years ago the whiskey wars 😂 but it’s settled now only maybe some liver issues remain for all the Alcohol.
The Germans only occupied Denmark for the same reason as the USA occupied Greenland to deny the enemy a bases of operation, the British had started to attack Swedens export of iron ore to Germany, which where Transported to a Harbor in Norway and the Germans counter attack and pushed back the British and occupied Norway and because a British bases in Denmark like they tried in Norway without permission wasn’t a risk they wanted to take bombing Germany and attack on German ships would be much easier, so because our military was much weaker than the first WW 1 because the idea was we are neutral and we had no territorial disputes and even if we had a military like the first it would not have stand a chance, maybe 2/3 days instead of hours Germany also used illegal tactics hiding soldiers in civilian ships and just before morning sailing into our ports and landing less than a kilometer from our parliament and Royal Palace and the same in all large harbors, tanks rolling over the border in Jutland and the worlds most powerful Air Force flying overhead the capital threatening to level it to the ground, the technology difference was huge and the government surrendered, but they announced it was a temporary occupation until the war ended, it that had been honed I don’t know but Denmark was treated exceptionally mild and where allowed to govern everything civilian even police with their services weapons and those who where sent to Denmark to work with the Danish government was not extremist or even political but bureaucrats which made it possible to create real friendly personnel relationship with them which where one of the keys to saving almost all danish Jews by far the highest of any occupied country 99,2% survive the war, the former German representative in Denmark sent a message to the Danish government he had good relations with about the order in Berlin had just been given to arrest the Danish Jews but it took several days for the Germans to organize so almost all raids on Jewish homes were empty houses and bribes and fishing boats got over 7.000 smudged to Sweden and 500 where taken by the Germans to concentration camp in Germany but heavy diplomacy from Denmark, Sweden and Red Cross help to only 54 danish Jews died, after long negotiations with a Swedish noble who was allowed to evacuate Scandinavian Jews on red cross bus before the war ended April 9 already in January 1945 they where transported to Sweden and avoided the death camps.
@@archerizeit7444not a single American has died in defense of Greenland 😂 only a Danish soldier died in Greenland in 1943, you are like Trump a story teller based not on facts, US law is clear Greenland belongs to Denmark forever no matter if you or trump or you like it, it takes a super majority in US congress to change and the loss of the Virgin Islands as a result and a little money but nothing like the debt the US have to Denmark and still Denmark has full sovereignty over Greenland 😂
The USA protects the USA with the bases on Greenland it has no influence on the defense of Greenland and only danish special forces on Dog sleds patrol Greenland to uphold our sovereignty over Greenland, as always selfish act and claim to be the opposite from reality, if we order the USA out and get Allies to help defend Greenland it will be much safer, having betrayers on our land is a bad idea.
China and Taiwan have both equal claims over the sovereignty over China, Russia had recognize Ukrainian independence and international recognized borders, two times, so Russia has no claim over Ukraine but Greenland is even worse because the US law says Denmark forevermore owns Greenland president Wilson signed and super majority in congress ratified into US law, Trump is wasting his time.
No one cares what you think about it. Has the CCP paid you your fifty cents yet?
Arctic Sandwich? 😅
Trump reality show always attracts attention, but he and journalists should have done research, the sales of the Virgin Islands was Denmark way to secure Greenland, as part of the deal “ the USA recognizes that the kingdom of Denmark owns Greenland for evermore” signed by President Wilson ratified by super majority in US congress into law, it can only be reversed by the same process and called the sale of the Virgin Islands, also does not give Greenland to the USA, if we want to sell Greenland according to US ad UK treaty the first right to buy is the UK, only if they pass can the US buy 🤦
Let's be honest. If America were to sell Wyoming to China the territory would experience a population and economic boom, leaving many US states far behind. The only problem is the 500,000 residents of Wyoming would never ever agree to be sold to the Chinese, despite the clear economic benefits of such a deal. Why?
Америка може володіти Гренландією, чому б і ні.. Трамп може це отримати.
why not, because it's not legal to sell people anymore, and it's not legal to sell territory without the consent of the people living there , that's why we don't sell our family and their dream of independence one day
@@veronicajensen7690if u r in strategic area like Greenland because it's a natural barrier against the Russia in the name of security of America.. better stay with Denmark protection than to be taken easily by ur groomers like Russia china and America
No because according to US law Greenland is Denmarks forever, only a super majority in congress can remove it and cancel the sale of the Virgin Islands to the USA
@@veronicajensen7690 and because according to US law Greenland is Denmarks forever, only a super majority in congress can remove it and cancel the sale of the Virgin Islands to the USA, 2/3 of congress will not vote for that and it will still change nothing, Denmark and Greenland have the only right in independence or stay in the Kingdom and we have already agreed on the terms for that.
Denmark would never sell for any amount, money is nice but some things are not for sale, if I asked to buy Texas Americans would have 😂
@@veronicajensen7690Who said anything about selling PEOPLE!?!?
And who said anything about selling territory without consent of the people living there?
I swear, you people are crazy.
And, by the way, "international law" is only binding if each country CHOOSES to be bound by it. Look around: CLEARLY there are MANY countries these days that didn't give a CRAP about "international law".
