    As a certified water operator, I'd like to point out that situations like the first clip are very rare. That is NOT what most mains or transmission lines look like. Most of them today are made of c900 pvc pipe or HDPE pipe. Neither or which corrode. Old pipe such as galvanized may be in use on some very old mains but most places have replaced them. On a separate note, depending on the composition of your water, deposits may form. Take a look at your water district's consumer confidence report (CCR) which MUST be public info(in my state at least) to see where your water comes from and if there have been any violations!

    Our apartment complex has banned the use of ANY wipes by the residence. The city had to come out and service the main from the street to the complex. They pulled out about a 5 pound mass of wipes. (Both baby wipes and 'flush able') And our building's had the same problem 3 times.

    • @JasonHalversonjaydog
      @JasonHalversonjaydog 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JasonHalversonjaydog I hear ya. We live in the lower (1/2 basement 1/2 above ground) apartment. So you can guess who gets the "Surprise" first when the mains are plugged. And of course, even if you tell the people that live above you not to flush or shower until it gets fixed? Pretty bad. (It's usually fixed within a few hours....we have the guy on speed dial)

      A long time ago they did i believe. Some places are fighting improper pipe installation that was put in the ground before they knew the consequenses. Asbestos pipe was even used for a while.

    • @MrWolfSnack
      @MrWolfSnack 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lead pipes were used for drinking water in old city service lines, and in some fixtures in period commercial buildings (porcelain drinking fountains). Cast iron was used for wastewater and underground storm lines, it could also be clay or a mixture of both. It was never used on service lines because it cannot be pressurized. I have cast iron pipe on my toilet stack for a 1950 house. My house supply lines are all copper with lead solder joints - nothing to worry about.
      Asbestos pipe was never used for drinking water, the person that made that comment was incorrect. They are thinking of the instances of where pipes would be WRAPPED in asbestos tubing for fire protection (fire sprinkler service) and may have also been flocked with a plaster like asbestos coating to protect from the cold in basements, attics, etc. The pipes are just standard steel pipes or cast iron. Asbestos is a fireproofing agent and insulator, it has no application to water itself.

    • @MrWolfSnack
      @MrWolfSnack 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A water filter won't remove that. It's just natural corrosion of the metal reacting to the water sitting in the pipe. You can have a pipe cutter run through to sand it down but it will just come back again.

    That backflow preventer reminded me of a job I did in Reno, I show up and I got a competitor next door, a different competitor across the street, two more a few houses away, on the other side I see a septic truck pumping out a basement, disaster cleanup vans. All these plumbers are snaking away in the front yards and it didn’t occur to a single one of them that the odds of that many houses backing up independently is astronomical. I called the city , they showed up, cleared the main and I sold a backflow preventer to my customer. Our company ended up installing over a dozen on that street alone.

      Throw food waste in the trash or onto your lawn for the birds and squirrels and other critters to eat on. A garbage disposal is useless. It was a flawed concept to fool the public into thinking they were keeping waste from the landfill, they aren't. All it does is filter into the wastewater treatment plant in your city onto their debris collection screen, get picked out, then loaded into a dump truck and taken to the landfill. All it does for you is keep you buying a garbage disposal every 5 years and keeping plumbers in business.

    Can you use lead and oakum on a shower drain instead of the rubber gasket.

    I believe up north we are not allowed to have plumbing run through exterior walls... so that method is the only way to get new plumbing installed

    Dear roger, should I get an electric auger like the Ryobi? I’m renting and the toilets clog more then once a year.

      Plumbing issues not caused by abuse or misuse are usually the responsibility of the landlord.

      I have a bad kitchen sink drain that clogs up once a year or so, sometimes twice if my MIL is around a lot. I switched the that little Ryobi and it's been money well spent. I only use it 1-2x a year but it gets loaned out every couple months and has held up for 2 ish years now. I know I need to hire a plumber to properly fix the drain but I'm cheap and the Ryobi works for now.

      @@billharner147 the Ryobi is great for the kitchen. Please don't use it for the toilet because it may get stuck in the main line. Then it's on him to get it out.
