    Andor is breaking new ground in the Star Wars universe, raising the bar for storytelling and characterization in a galaxy far, far away. And, it features mostly new characters. So why is it so much more effective than the Book of Boba Fett, which featured cherished characters form the original trilogy like Luke Syywalker; the Clone Wars, like Ahsoka Tano, and form the Disney era, like Din Djarin and Grogu? I this video we break down why one show succeeded and the other failed.

    I want to talk about cassian andor and the book of boba fett-specifically how these two shows highlight certain flaws in disney star wars, and also show the growing divide in our star wars fandom. A little later I’m going to be joined by two of the best, Heather Antos and Adam Lance Garcia, but first here’s my take.
    Andor is unlike any star wars I have ever seen. Its character based, slow paced, and is a top notch political spy thriller. I will say though that it's not really made for kids. I would bet that most kids are bored by it, in fact.
    When Andor was first released to the press, I saw a lot of dialogue on twitter that the show didn't give them member berries”.
    Doug: what’s member berries?
    It’s from an episode of South Park, basically eating member berries makes you bask in nostalgia, and they have been the downfall of every society. Basically when a culture peaks, it just wants to relieve its former glory.
    Doug: Oh, like many of the most popular TV shows and movies today.
    Exactly. Andor does feature tons of easter eggs, but they’re all in the background, like the temple of doom stones in Luther's shop. Or there tied in more with the characters and the story. Like how mon mothma speaks out for the people of Ghorman, and that same activism leads her to be declared an enemy of the empire in star wars rebels.
    Not that there’s anything wrong with wanting to relive the things you loved as a child. That’s why we buy fun collecti=bles like lightsabers. Speaking of which. Doug, check this out.
    Back to what i was saying. The problem is the book of boba fett was all easter eggs, and very little story. The main character's motivations were never made clear. The flashbacks were awkwardly placed-which I'll talk about in a second. And really it felt like two shows. The flashback heavy first half, and the guest star filled second half.
    There were so many legacy characters appearing in the book of Boba Fett that there was an entire episode that did not feature the main character-and it was the best episode of the show. So the book of Boba Fett felt like a Frankenstein's monster from a TV show.
    And this is where I think andor is such a better show than the book of boba fett-its structure. We made a whole video about the book of boba fett’s structure, and how flashbacks should be used in a film or show. So I’m going to revisit a bit of that video, but then compare it to andor to express what this show does so well, as it cuts between its different storylines.
    Let’s look at the first few episodes of Boba Fett, and how they incorporate the flashbacks.
    Book of boba fett started off in a challenging position. The saga left off with the character in two different points. Falling into the sarlacc pit, and sitting on Jabba's throne. So the show had to show us how he got from the pit, to where we saw him in the mandalorian, and what happens after the mandalorian. So on paper, flashbacks are a good idea.
    F;sshbacks can be used to shed light on a person’s character, like in orange is the new black. To reveal thematic parallels, like in godfather 2. Or to show a character remembering something in the past that helps them in the present, like in Lost. All of these flashbacks serve the present day storyline- but the book of boba fett's flashbacks were placed arbitrarily, and did not service the present story.
    At the very least, flashbacks should reveal thematic parallels, so the two timelines are at least bringin the audience along on separate journeys that feel like a single story. This is what andor does so well in its first episode.

      Andor is much more gritty, grim, suspenseful and hard-hitting compared to the rest of the Star Wars universe. I suppose that's partly due to the Rogue One movie also being edgier as well. Star Wars was like an otherworldly adventure, but Andor is like a dystopian future and struggle against tyranny. This is like 1984 set in a galaxy far, far away.

    Andor is what I have wanted from Star Wars the past several years. I'm 50 years old, and am more attracted to these stories about other characters in the Star Wars universe dealing with the changes going on around them. I've tried to watch Clone Wars, Rebels, etc, but there is too much content geared toward young children. And that's OK, Star Wars has a long history of appealing to children. But not every story told needs to include that demographic. There's room for more serious, complex, stories. Loving Andor, I don't expect it to do well, but I hope well enough that Disney sees the value in telling occasional stories for older fans who's tastes have changed since they were 5.

Besides, those shows helped fill the time between the prequels and the OT. About the rest I'm one hundred percent with you.

      RO was already one of my favorites, this series giving it more of a foundation and seeing how the other 99.99 % of the Rebels who weren't Jedi were pulled into the fold is just amazing foresight in building the on screen lore for the everyman's struggle and gives the SW universe story so much depth. I just hope they use the same level of detail and slow burn restraint in building a solid story for the Asoka series.

    One of the things that Andor is showing really well is the fact that the Empire is actually evil, Star Wars fans tend to romanticize the whole Empire thing and make fun of Storm Troopers terrible aim, but this show is portraying the ISB and the Empire like the cruel and oppressive organization they are. In general I think easter eggs and cameos are cool, but not only of fan service the man lives. Can't wait to see the remaining episodes!

      Not only that, but this show is clearly showing a competent and capable Empire, that is trying to really show it's capabilities. What I imagine will happen, and am already seeing, is the true corruption starting to fracture the Empire. I also am so glad that they are using the ISB, rather than the navy. Honestly it's so great to see true government rather than a weak form of martial law.

      @@airfixx_8952 - Star Wars has not always been that way. In fact, in STAR WARS, renamed A NEW HOPE, Han shot first, Leia was sort of bitchy, Luke was borderline whiny and may have been a psychopath in training (murdering rats for fun). The ewoks arrived in RETURN OF THE JEDI. That's when George turned the franchise over to younger children-- it wasn't always that way. He had his first child in 1981 and it's likely fatherhood gave him a different perspective,. It's also likely that he realized the bulk of the merchandising should be targeted to young children, because they're the ones who'll ensure their parents spend an inordinate amount of money on frippery. I was 8 in 1983 and I didn't like the ewoks, at all. Fuzzy bears fighting the good fight? Oh, please. Even my 8 year old self could spot the pandering, especially after the tone of EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. Lucas doubled down on the kids friendly tone with the prequels (lazy writing, bright colors and pew-pews), which is why many of us who grew up with episodes IV, V, and VI didn't particularly like them.

    • @airfixx_8952
      @airfixx_8952 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@eme.261 The above point wasn't that SWs was exclusively for kids from day 1, but the fact is that George sought to merch the hell out of things and exploit the kids-dollar market from the beginning.... The market was flooded with toys and everything else long before ESB let alone ROTJ and it certainly wasn't adults that were sleeping with OG SWs bed covers, having SWs wallpaper, using SWs lunch boxes etc. etc.
      From day 1 there were aspects of the droids that were blatantly geared towards locking in the kids affections. Yes; there were other mature elements woven in too; but that's just the genius of George and his writing crew.
      ...Then look at the state of the holiday special in 1978!
      Sure ESB took a darker turn, but it was merely a chapter in the grand scheme of things (and even then we had the quirky/cuteness of Yoda as counterbalance).
      Disney did a terrible job with the sequel trilogy, but that doesn't make them the 1-size-fits-all villains upon which to pin the blame for all the less desirable elements of the last 47 years. The initial above suggestion that Disney are responsible for the advent of mass merchandising spin-offs of the SWs franchise is pure nonsense. Alongside the band Kiss and a few notable others, George took the merchandising of the entertainment arts to a whole new level. Ironically, although Disney had toys out in the 1970s they were nothing close to the phenomena of SWs toys.

And as we know there are very very few jedi left in this period to focus on. That's your problem is you stopped 2 episodes in. It hasn't evolved to the point of Andor getting wrapped up in the Rebellion. The only complaints I've seen about this show are all from people that only watched an episode or two. It feels like Star Wars & a well written story with several plots. The Jedi & Sith is such a tiny tiny part of the universe. Very few people have ever seen a Jedi. The overwhelming vast majority of people are like the individual Andor & is so great to see their stories. As long as it’s well written I’ll take this type of show anytime.

    I think it's pretty simple. Andor keeps you on the edge of your seat. I spent all Thursday Night, a day after I watched the show, thinking about if Mon Mothma is going to trade her Daughter's Freedom, body, and future for 400k to save the rebellion. Like on one hand, if she doesn't cover the 400k her family can be in danger anyway, so why not give up your kid and keep the rebellion alive. On the other hand. It's your CHILD. What a heartbreaking decision she has to make, and either way she goes I will understand BUT I can't wait to find out Which way she decides to go. This is the level of TENSION and DRAMA that has this at 94% and 84% loved by critics and fans. I think that 84% will creep up to 90% once people who waited to binge watch at end of season watch it. Bobas time with the Tuscans is a slow reveal of why boba has come to be more altruistic. It reminds you that he’s not just after power and control but respect and community, so it serves a powerful purpose, rather than boba being a badass with matching flashbacks.
    The flashbacks in Andor serve little to no purpose. We know he had a sister, we can tell he was taken in by the older lady, but that’s it. The flashbacks don’t affect much of what we know by seeing the present.
    Andor shines in its political thriller style and actually gives me an understanding of the empires perspective in a way that makes you almost sympathize with the individual imperial agents.
    But I don’t think the boba flashbacks were worse than Andor.

    However, I now think it's the best Star Wars TV series too. It's really clever and very deep.

    Love the content. Using you as my place to put this comment into the world: Why is no one talking about Andor's sister? Same writer for episodes 1-3 and 11-12. You KNOW it must be a major plot point about to drop.

    Not gonna lie, when I first heard about Andor getting a series, I brushed it off and wondered who asked for this show about a character that has died in a Star Wars spin off. But I decided to give it a shot and was pleasantly surprised and proven wrong. Andor is so different yet fits into the Star Wars universe and since I enjoyed the fights of Rogue One, even though Andor doesn't have as much action, it is still interesting and I can't wait to find out what is gonna happen next. On top of having actual competent Imperials, makes you want to root for our heroes even more, instead of what Mandalorian Season 1 finale gave us(Heh remember stormtroopers can't aim)

    Hey Ryan, fantastic video as always, saw a great reminder at 5:05 I meant to tell you about if you haven't been told/seen already, Marva's old ship/Cassian's ship looks JUST like the Moldy Crow, Kyle Katarn's ship from the Star Wars: Dark Forces games/EU, which is done super intentionally as was Jyn Erso's name being so close to Jan Ors's, also from Dark Forces et al.

    The problem with nostalgia rout is that's it only works short term. If you want your movie/show to be timeless you have to make it stand on its own without relaying on familiar faces to keep audiences interested. Thats why Mando S1 and Andor work so well! And im glad Andor is finally getting recognition.

    Andor is fantastic with a few strange caveats. I can't come up with a good reason for it to be SO human-heavy as aliens are part and parcel with the whole "galactic" aspect of the republic/empire/whatever. My best assumption is with it being so drama/character driven, getting props or cgi to emote convincingly would be too difficult. Aside from that TINY gripe Andor is leagues ahead of BoBF which was hammy fan-service that leaned FAR too heavily into The Volume for production. Anyone else Remember the ridiculous Vespa chase?

      SW:ANH Aliens mostly in Tatooine, ESB hardly any Aliens outside of Ugnaught and Chewy. Only alien Rebel is Chewy. ROTJ, Aliens mostly on Tatooine and End or. How many rebel Aliens outside of the Mon Calamari? R1, handful of Rebel Aliens. Conclusion? There simply aren't that many aliens when it comes to the rebels. Most aliens in Imperial ruled Star Wars are segregated or on Tatooine. Going off of canon, we shouldnt see a ton outside of Tatooine. Wouldnt make sense in this time period.

    • @TheNfl100
      @TheNfl100 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A good canon reason for the lack of aliens would be that the Empire was pretty racist/xenophobic against non-human species and enslaved most of them. You don't see a single non-human imperial officer in all of Star Wars that I can think of except Thrawn.

    • @robertkarp2070
      @robertkarp2070 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Alien presence just wasn't that common in his corner of the galaxy. As far as the prison is concerned. I'm sure the Empire was using alien lifeforms in other prison, with each of the prisons housing the lifeforms of the same species together because it was cheaper to house people that are alike, rather then having to have to have facilities to deal with the different species all in the same unit.

    • @Issicra
      @Issicra ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm guessing they wanted to keep aliens down to a minimum in service of keeping the show more grounded. A guy in a green rubber suit is a bit distracting in a hyper-realistic Star Wars show. Similarly, they haven't introduced or cameo'd any force users. Palpatine is mentioned, but they don't know he's a Sith, or what one even is. It sounds weird, but fantasy characters just wouldn't work in this show.
      Don't get me wrong, I love the green rubber suits, lightsabers, X-wings, TIE Fighters, AT-STs and space wizards, but I like that Andor seems very far removed from all that.

    Enjoyed Book of Boba Fett, it brought something campy and fun that I don't think Andor or Mandolorian tried to do. I love the different styles. The director for most of Book of Boba Fett did Spy Kids which are super fun and different for kids and appealed to a wacky sense of humor in adults. Being more open minded to art allows different styles to be created and utilized. :)

    What makes Andor great is what made a show like Breaking Bad great. Compelling characters with motivations, aspirations, fears, flaws, etc. Characters can drive the story and that's what Andor does.

    I think one of the appeals of the series for me is that it raises the stakes of the original trilogy. It's not just sneering villains on space stations that blow up planets, but that it crushes and intrudes on people's homes, relationships, and souls.

      Oh yeah! Agreed. Reminds me of the USA today... the US has the largest slave prison population (as it is constitutionally legal for prisoners to be slaves). Definitely metaphor for any imperialist / protofascist society. It is awesome Star Wars was originally a metaphor for US imperialism, oppression and violence during Vietnam.

    I can honestly say I was more hyped for Andor than I was Kenobi. Despite enjoying Kenobi I didn't really feel as if it added much more to the world of Star Wars, whereas Andor does that so well - I am genuinely invested in this story and have been loving the world building and story telling that it adds.

    Totally agree that Boba Fett's reasoning for wanting to give up bounty hunting and take over a town seemed rushed, but I wasn't expecting much from this show but was pleased that he had a voice after not having one in the original trilogy. Because of the amount of episodes Andor has, it gives you time to link with the characters before Rogue One and really see mindset of the Empire.
    I wanted the Obi Wan Kenobi series to have this amount of depth and development.

    Andor has been great. Boba Fett was boring until the last couple episodes. Andor is world-building outside of our usual characters. I like that it's branching out.
    Adam saying Clone Wars not being as consistent as this, I have a feeling that if Clone Wars started today, it wouldn't have been 20+ episodes per season. They needed the filler back then that you don't need with the luxury of streaming.

    Book of Boba Fett was bad because of all the needless and forced fan service. It's too much. We don't need 172 people/places/things from other shows, comics, books, movies. We just want Boba Fett being a badass.
    Andor is amazing for it's own reasons, but the lack of fan service is extremely refreshing.
