Dennis Edwards is the blueprint, vocally. He was able to do what some other similar singers hoped they were doing. Beautiful, powerful, expert singing.
The temptations were one of the best groups of all time . I wish I could have been there to see them live. They among others were pioneers to the music industry and watching the movie gave me such a great joy . I love biographies on music's kings .

Talent like this doesn't come our way often. In their time there was no hiding behind technology like we have today to enhance a performance. These guys melded together in such a unique way - from Eddie's high to Melvin's low to Paul's raspy baritone....there is no equal in American music to the Temptations.

Two Grammys and three Billboard number one hits. Ruffin was Ruffin, and Edwards was Edwards, but the Tempts were the best with BOTH of them as main leads
They got grammys that by then were long over do. It's a reason Ruffin and the Classic 5 is the general favorite. It's a reason My Girl is their most famous song and did to the charts something that was mind blowing.
Paul Williams was the boss. He was a mountain of confidence, poise and delivery. In my mind, there is no doubt what so ever that he was the most talented of any Temp.

Amazing post! It's like a mini concert. This video shows why Paul Williams is so beloved by many Tempts fans. His voice just captures your attention, whether he's singing strong and fast paced or soft and slow; that's definitely what it did with his performance of "I Gotta Be Me", and my jaw dropped when he sung My Girl. I was not expecting that. Each performance was top notch, and I just love the transition from Ol Man River to Swanee. Thx for this post, it's really appreciated

I read somewhere that Paul was disenchanted about not being one of the main leads after David came in as he and Eddie sang leads on the popular hits, but I see Paul in a lot of these later clips doing a lot of the singing and I hope that fulfilled his desire to lead. He is magnificent on the standards. Besides having soul, Paul could have been a lounge singer as well (perhaps a little Sam Cooke-ish). I could see him in a tux with the top shirt button undone and the bow tie hanging.

Anyone who was fortunate enough to see them live back then was fortunate enough! Early on, I believe all of them had lead songs, but Paul was really a dynamic lead and he put everything into his songs. He was, usually, soaking wet, when he finished.

I know it's all opinions but I think Paul was just as great as David and Eddie. He sang lead on their early songs which may not have been chart toppers but he certainly held his own.

Today is November 18, 2013 and 18 viewers found something to dislike in this marvelous Temptations Show of 1969 where Paul Williams was still alive and singing some tunes which included his former Temptations member, David Ruffin's signature tune 'My Girl' along with Eddie Kendricks' silky smooth falsetto on 'Girl ( Why You Wanna Make Me Blue'), 'You're My Everything, and Melvin's near copycat rendition of the earlier Flamingos treatment of Ol' Man River' which still shines, and talented but tragically flawed alcoholic Kaye Stevens manages to not only hold her own against the fabulous Temptations, but actually also shines in her too brief turn w/the Temptations.
It's just amazing to be able to watch and listen to these great films of these beautiful, awesome performers. I wish alcohol and drugs did not take hold of Paul and David. Paul sang from his heart and David sang from his soul, may they rest in peace. God Bless them all. This is history.

Melvin, an acquaintance, such a real and good man, God bless his Soul with positive energies always. . Appreciate his authentic, he was always with his wife and daughters, and brought the to my husband's show, when I'd see him. Last time I saw him and his wife was at Matteo's in LA, for dinner.
As far comparisions of the individual Temptation, each gentlemen (David, Paul, or Dennis) brought their own talented uniqueness and contributions towards the Temptations' great musical legacy. Just continue to enjoy and support the music.
Paul Williams had the biggest crossover potential out of all the Temps because he was the best with the live show tunes. He also had a natural theatrical presence. I believe he could have done well in film or theatre.

As far comparisions of the individual Temptation, each gentlemen (David, Paul, or Dennis) brought their own talented
uniqueness and contributions towards the Temptations' great musical legacy. Just continue to enjoy and support the music.

Paul Williams had the biggest crossover potential out of all the Temps because he was the best with the live show tunes.
He also had a natural theatrical presence. I believe he could have done well in film or theatre.
Totally agree! Also other songs" that Paul sang Lead on, I think were caught between end of doo wop and Motown years of highest pop crossover years.
I remember this show the first it was aired in 1969. We even bought the soundtrack
