I think this review has started to make me realise how much plug ins make sense for my driving habits at the moment. With a relatively short commute id never need to put any fuel in the car for my work commute, but then when I do longer trips every other month to visit family I don’t have to worry about range. The only question this raises is the one of petrol being sat - my motorbikes don’t like petrol to be in the tank for longer than about a month otherwise it creates a problem starting. I wonder if this would ever prove a problem for me using the ICE so little?
I have the E tense, the electric range is a lot less than what it states, about 25 miles as an absolute maximum with very efficient driving. If you make a single journey across town say 40 miles round trip, you will use the petrol engine for almost half of that. Also it has a very small fuel tank due to the battery, only about 35 litres, so you will actually use up all the fuel within a few weeks if you do a bit of motorway driving. Also driving above 60mph drains the electric battery, you'll get like 15 to 20 miles of range driving at those speeds
As far as I know, they isn't any way you can adopt that engine on thesetwo cars, the platform hasn't been designed for 6 cylinders. That was true for the EMP2 v1 and v2, perhaps it changed since then, but I wouldn't bet on it. Anyway, DS should be 100% electrified (which means hybrid should still exist) in few years, so perhaps a hybrid V6, but sorry, it will never happen in europe, perhaps China.
It would only happen in the US and Canada if they decide to go for it. Because buyers there would usually never go for a 1.3 or 1.6 engine, they'll feel it's way underpowered and as a result, dangerous for highway driving.
Agree, it misses the true “premium” mission on several points (the range topping 1.6 turbo is a massive one for me) but the range / consumption argument applies to every plug-in hybrid I’ve tried - including the German ones. IMO they are all good until the battery is depleted and then you pay a performance / consumption penalty for the additional weight. Maybe the 30 mile electric range at is a bit feeble but it’s pretty close to the daily average mileage in the UK so it does have the opportunity to minimise ICE consumption for many - provided you can recharge daily. You can go on the occasional long journeys and suffer with mediocre performance / consumption - but without range anxiety.
It might say DS on the tin buts it’s still a Peugeot/ Citroen when you lift the lid. The 1.2 3 cylinder engine you mentioned also lives in my daily Vauxhall combo life van it’s a good little engine with the turbo and 8 speed automatic gearbox it lugs the van about with no problem and my average mpg hovers about the 36 mpg. It’s not very posh inside like the DS but it’s a workhorse and doesn’t pretend to be any thing else. The DS with the 1.2 doesn’t sound a bad prospect. And save some cash over the car you tested.
DS like many other brands that do produce phev’s do it in the wrong way. They should use the ICE as a generator and use exclusively the EM for propulsion. Then they could use an even smaller battery, no gearbox, use the ICE in a extremely efficiency mode….
We have one, it really is a thing of beauty and a pleasure to drive everyone comments on it, but like all cars they have niggles, on this is the stop start as soon as you pull up it stops 🫣 and on ours no hill assist, may be a software issue, oh and just found out the heated windscreen only defrosts 50mm down the passenger side wtf 😡🥶 maybe these will be resolved on 1st service, but other than that love it
If England gets them please review the COFFEE 1 from WEY from china. It has a 150km battery range as a PHEV. Now dont expect Panther like performance however that is probably not the goal of a PHEV. A google search of average trips made show that 97% of all trips are less than 100km. SO at 150km range you almost have a BEV withou the huge cost. I would estimate in the UK around 30-35 thousand pounds or around 55K in Australia. Jason
When I tried it, I was disappointed how noisy it was on the highway. The road noise coming from the front tires was not premium in my opinion. Otherwise I was surprised how good it was. Clearly not sporty but if you want a nice comfy and polyvalent car, it s a very good choice
May I suggest you get the non hybrid version? Also, the car is quite old and it will be refreshed this year with the looks and equipment from the DS4, which includes the HUD and wireless Android Auto.
Those consumption figures are misleading yes but they are a big reason why manufacturers have to build plugins. For example here in Sweden it makes all the difference when it comes to tax and incentives. Idiotic according to me but... These hybrid terms are getting confused, the Corolla hybrid is a hybrid, not a mild-hybrid. That would be something like the Volvo V60 B4. Great review though James!
I get the idea with PHEVs that the engine isn't particularly efficient if you're not sitting at low revs in high gear, and the battery range is negatively affected if you're not pottering around town between 20 and 30mph. We know that when both are combined, it can make for good performance, but this of course exposes the lack of range and the extra weight of the vehicle. HYbrid4 would be an alternative, but then again, we all know how fashionable diesels are. Instead of chasing headline MPG figures, wouldn't a mild hybrid solution (and its reduction in weight) plus a bit of honesty hurt so much?
That's the thing with establishing a new premium-brand, isn't it? In order to succeed, you have to immediately do everything right, as you are serving a more demanding customer. A good attempt doesn't seem enough. With their latest models, I can see DS thriving in a few years time, though. The benefits of plug in-hybrids are a little lost on me too, personally. It makes sense perhaps if you drive short distances a lot, but in that case you're more likely to buy a smaller and cheaper car, no?
Agree it's not up to the real premium mark only needs to be a mild hybrid That's why we have driven the DS7 in 2.litre hdi only with full ultra premium mode with all optional extras inclusive included in a deal price. Average range mpg 70, long range mpg 86.
I think these look so cool and unique, but the powertrains are just basic Citroen units and ruin it. Plus, that interior needs contrast stitching and a two tone colour scheme.
You have to take your hats off to the French for keeping their car industry,French and going ok.Compare them to Britain who have sold all theirs and you have to admit the French were right to keep theirs. Now to the DS range.Well for me you have to go for them as a second hand option. They are more or less up there with other premium cars but like any other French or mainstream Italian cars, they depreciate mucho.I would definitely by a say 2-3 year DS at a drop of a hat.A close mate of mine has done and he is extremely happy with his. That is the best way to go after a DS car.
Peugeot do a 1.6ltr hybrid performance estate that is in a similar price bracket. It was featured, recently, on a Carwow second-hand price review. At less than 1 year old it had lost (by a large margin) the biggest percentage of value. This massive depreciation is what scares me and many others off buying Peugeot/Citroën/DS.
I’ve bought my DS3 Crossback somewhere in September for 21.5k£ with 3y warranty and GAP insurance included and now can barely get 19.6k£ for it…just in 4 months and the car has only 10104 miles in clock
@@socalguy829 Does it, though? Should manufacturers create a false of value by offering an arbitrary engine measurement that says almost nothing about sophistication? What's the most sophisticated 1.6 in the world and what's it for 2.5s? That 2.0 or 2.5 you desire is going to hit you hard on road tax and insurance without adding any sort of comfort or performance unless kept absolutely the same otherwise. All you pay for with a "premium" engine size is NOTHING. The space for fuel to be injected and expanded into. It's not even a larger dildo, it's a larger void to fill. Requiring more metal to make into a decent apparatus. Costing you more. But not giving you anything. You'd have loved the emperor's new clothes. Only really smart purple could see it. What's the point of progress if you need a 2.0 or 2.5 liter engine to power a premium mid size car, in 2022? So crazy arbitrary. Why on earth would you consider a Citroen for very similar price to the 335d touring. That’s all it is a Citroen dressed up. Like another comment. It’s a flash watch with a cheap eta movement.
Cause it isnt a Citroen dressed up. Its Peugeot chassis of new 3008/5008 underneath , and i get over 50 mpg in my 2l never less than 45 mpg. But compare X3 with ds7 and You will get totally different result , 2 l in highest trim is about 30 % less then BMW, and DS7 wins by far with equipment .
Citroën; which spawned DS when it was part of PSA, and now Stellantis, has lost all respect from me in the early 2000s. At that time already, PSA has all but forgotten how to build exciting engines for their buyers, or exciting chassis; they would have had a HUGE opportunity to correct that with their runaway rally success (at the hands of a certain Sébastien Loeb) but alas: no 4WD, four pot turbocharged Xsara to be seen; nor a C4 or DS3 after that. And look at their lineup today. It's, truthfully, pathetic. Had they not lost the shift to EVs, I'd have some respect for them... But no, not even that. And the attitude of their CEO really does not help.
Gear shift selector, indicator stalk, flappy paddle, door handle and rear mirror all looks to be the same as those in my 2008. They aren't poor quality by any means but I'm surprised since they are all daily touch points.
@@vaudou74 they all do it for the mechanical components and I can excuse the odd switches & even the entertainment unit but if DS has premium aspiration, it just seems odd they don't change things like the door handle or the gear selector.
I never understand why a French Automaker wants to be german. The ultimate flaw from the right off. Citroën, Mors and Voisin look into Citroëns history some incredible. 2cv Bauhaus levels of design, the 1955 DS19 Gothic inspired styling amazing out the box engineering. Citroën has an amazing history why make a sub brand? And again why try be German jeez. ?! Make a statement do not follow convention, out the box engineering and pure artistry. Squishy squashy suspension and a good dose of pragmatism in design. Maby I might take note. I personally dont think there is any substance to the DS Brand. I am a passionate Citroën enthusiast owned a 59 2cv and a 59 ID. I am 37. I like german cars but as a time served mechanic I dont like the built quality lack of under body seam sealing etc. The Germans are really skimping in certain areas. Overrated.
I also had 2 CV's 7-8 of them , Diane , and a lot of German and Italian cars, . I simply went in open minded . Liked the design , size worked for me for this moment in time, and price was right for almost all equipment . They are not trying to be German, they just wanted to be more exclusive , and i think it worked. Substance for a separate brand or not , I think it worked.

You can get so much car for £50k second hand. Why bother buying new? Esspecially when all it will get you is a 1.6 4 banger. People don't see it like that though, they want a brand new car even if it's a bit shit. You could buy a top of the range Jaguar XJR for that kind of money.
When launched, this could be specced with a 2.0 diesel turbo. It seems that PSA have dropped the legendary 2.0 HDi which is what made the most sense, when the DS7 was released, I would recommend it. Now? Not at all. Hybrids are utterly pointless. Either get an ICE or get a full electric. Hybrids are the worst of both worlds.
Yes, these hybrids are too compromised, especially on bigger cars. Anyhow, they have done so because they have to comply with fleet-wide emissions. How the Germans can get away with still offering 3 litters, I don't know.

In France, most of New cars are sold for companies, and Plug in hybrid became just a more significant fiscal matter than gaz mileage
We have one, it really is a thing of beauty and a pleasure to drive everyone comments on it,
but like all cars they have niggles, on this is the stop start as soon as you pull up it stops 🫣 and on ours no hill assist, may be a software issue, oh and just found out the heated windscreen only defrosts 50mm down the passenger side wtf 😡🥶 maybe these will be resolved on 1st service, but other than that love it
If England gets them please review the COFFEE 1 from WEY from china.
They release it in 2017, it's the time to redesign it, specially the interior got old.
Seeing that BRM at 5:05 is odd. Those are motorsport watches, and very expensive.
Yes, and You get a BRM watch that rotates out of the dash in higher trim levels.
talking about the seats..The french do make bloody comfy seats. My mates x7 BMW is so uncomfortable on a long run i cant wait to get out.
Great car, this car is more future proof than any diesel. Despite the smallish engine, I'd have this over any diesel SUV.
I just don’t get manufactures obsession with those mixed black and silver alloys - they are everywhere and to my mind all look pants.
Agreed. I think Merc started it
Agree it's not up to the real premium mark only needs to be a mild hybrid
That's why we have driven the DS7 in 2.litre hdi only with full ultra premium mode with all optional extras inclusive included in a deal price.
Average range mpg 70,
long range mpg 86.
Looks great. People should buy more of these. Worth the price.
this price for this car no good. This car good price is only with 130 HP dizel...
Stellantis just don't have any serious engines on offer and to make things even worse they're now phasing out 1.6 petrol turbo and 2.0 diesel.
Another great review. AWESOME shirt!
Thanks J!
Very nice except the tail pipes and the drl. Lights on front bumper rest is good design
1.6 is good enough for F1. When I grew up they ran 3.5 N/A.
Does size really matter more than cost and maintenance?
it does when you're charging premium prices. as mentioned none of the other premium marques have such small engines at this price point.
When at the same time Mercedes gives itself the greatest engineering nightmare ever promising hypercar buyer to actually use an F1 1.6 engine when for that car they had better started from scratch.
Maybe decide what's a suitable torque figure for a premium car in 2022. Let the professionals decide where they are going to get it from.
@@socalguy829 They dropped bigger engines. Plan is to go full electric , so this was a stop gap , and not all engines are available on all markets. I have a 2.0 l in mine.
We have a 2 year old Citroen C5 Aircross and the gear selector is the same as that one.
It's PSAs generic gear selector for the EAT8 gearbox
this is maybe the 6th or 7th time the French brands have tried to move upmarket, it never works. they just don't have the same prestige outside their home market and this certainly won't be the car to do it. another french luxury barge which will sell in tiny numbers
Certainly an english guy who believe english cars are better. But your brands are all german. We, frenchies, are proud of our french brands. You should say thanks to germans for their money and technologies…..
I hope the French electric’s have improved 😂 nice review James.
Exactly my thoughts. When i saw the rotating headlights i was already sweating
@@Sneka97 0 reported issues btw on them. And mine are working perfectly , they dont just dance they follow the road and steering wheel in DS fashion.
Doesn’t matter if the car brand is french or german, the electrics are all supplied by the same manufacturers. And headlights have been full of electric motors for decades.
@@christianronn5301 Yes, and everyone raved how VW is reliable, Mk3 Golf had constant issues with motor in headlights, i remember my friend went trough them like light-bulbs.
@@idimidodjimi6760 Problems with little motorized stuff seems to be a 90’s thing that’s mostly solved now. Unless you own a VW, in which case central locking issues are a part of your everyday life still. 😂
Your review is amazing and very professional !!!
I am very interested in this vehicle in the 225HP plug-in model.
I am interested in a very, very well-equipped and luxurious vehicle.
From what I understand from your review, the vehicle is too expensive relative to what it has.
And is it not worth buying a plug-in car because there are no real fuel savings here?
Did I get you right?
Yes that's right
@@JayEmmOnCars This car has 2 electric motors as you said. However one is at the front not two at the back as you described.
3008 and this are the best looking suvs on the segment
I'm sure it's a decent family car and the interior is lovely but it looks the same as all the other crossovers.☮️
Is it just me who thinks now stellantis is a thing they should really drop the HEMI V8 in it to make the Germans go "shiza American power"
Strange that they didnt give this heads up display.. It was avalible on the Citroën C6 in 2005.
This car is also not new, launched in 2017
I love my petrol version of DS7
It’s like a fancy dress watch with a basic quartz movement
I don't understand why a camera is the solution for scanning bad road ahead. Surely a rsdar based system would be far superior?
The XJ was cancelled because according to the new head of Jag it wasn’t enough
Will you do a DS4 Review ?
I am 90% Scottish, and I smile every time I hear lit-tit-chur.
I feel this is one of the few words us Americans say better. Well, that and aluminum.
American word pronouncing is always worse.Just no proper queen's English......😉
@@andyhunt457 Well I would imagine it would be different. The Scots did a number on her majesty’s English as well.
As an American we kicked King George to the curb in an epic fashion. I believe we did the same with the monarch’s English at that same time.
Watching Americans try to figure out a roundabout is concerning and French like as well.
@@outpowspo Still the Scott's call it Aluminium......😉😁
Sadly…the DS7 is a rare beast and I have yet to see one being driven…just on display but nobody actually bought one. It has a great deal to like and is very special in many ways…but…it just doesn’t sell. 😐
The DS7 outsells it's rivals from Lexus, and Jag in Europe, plus Affa in the UK. The UK is very German centric, but I have one on order because it's good not to follow the herd!
In London you can see lots of them..
omg that shirt . whooaa
Excellent review and a Really nice car. Wouldn’t be nice if they could do a big DS saloon? Wishful thinking I know.
It's called a ds9

AndroidAuto without Integration of maps etc?
Is that still called AA? Why the f would you do that? License cost?
That says a lot. The cheapest cars nowadays has full functional AA.
I wonder how this car would hold up after 3 years
Just dont get these new cars, they really dont seem to be achieving anything new. Ive handed back my new mercedes and going back to using my 1997 SAAB 9000 Aero 2.3T. 317BHP, 42MPG average and 510 miles per tank. From a car thats 25 years old !.
Bmw. Audi. Mercedes.
Porsche ✋😕
What would you say is better this than a hybrid Jaguar f pace? As I am interested in both these cars
Honestly the F Pace is dramatically bigger than the DS, to the point that you cant compare them easily
My first car was a 1982 1.6 Astra Lux. I usually got at least 40 mpg. I have a 335d and that hits 40mpg over the last 3200miles.
Beat me!
you journalists always tets most equpied in highest price cars ...why did you not tests most cheap vesrion of DS 7 Bastille with 130 HP diesel ??
It looks like a rebadged and slightly restyled Audi Q5
I want to like it and still do ,but 50k …😳
Gear shift selector, indicator stalk, flappy paddle, door handle and rear mirror all looks to be the same as those in my 2008. They aren't poor quality by any means but I'm surprised since they are all daily touch points.
ssame group, same parts... like skoda/vw-audi.... parts sharing within the same group.
I drive mine since last Year 30000km and 1.5 liter gas, so you don't now yet wot for a extens is made for, it's a lot more better to drive a Audi and faster to👍😅
You can get so much car for £50k second hand. Why bother buying new? Esspecially when all it will get you is a 1.6 4 banger. People don't see it like that though, they want a brand new car even if it's a bit shit. You could buy a top of the range Jaguar XJR for that kind of money.
Bentley to BMW? It's a DS J 🙃😄
No terrible cars? Have you driven a Mitsubishi mirage lately? Amazingly they sell that in the United States, I don't know about the UK
They do sell the mirage here but that's a cheap car this not so much
A new hybrid, interesting but not for me nor I suspect many new car buyers.
you stand beside the car WYE DOT YOU PUT ON THE INDICATORS
Jay, someone's cloned your channel again. I reported post.
@@Xerxesro1 the Germans manufacturers have relatively new engines; the 1.6l Prince engine in this DS7 is from 2006 (its been evolved to meet latest regs). Engine tech has moved on a long way since 2006.
@@TroyHR123 You are missing the point. Just because it's based on the older one it doesn't make it old. This one has twin-scroll turbo and variable valve lift. Besides, it won best engine of the year 1.4 to 1.8 award for 8 years in a row.
DS should be heartily praised for limiting engine sizes to 1.6 litres rather than pandering to anti ecology male macho fantasies of having unecessarily large engines.
