  • At Amazon, we’ve been engaged in the practical application of machine learning for many years now. Some of this work is highly visible: our autonomous Prime Air delivery drones; the Amazon Go convenience store that uses machine vision to eliminate checkout lines; and Alexa, our cloud-based AI assistant. But much of what we do with machine learning happens beneath the surface. Machine learning drives our algorithms for demand forecasting, product search ranking, product and deals recommendations, merchandising placements, fraud detection, translations, and much more. Though less visible, much of the impact of machine learning will be of this type - quietly but meaningfully improving core operations.

I have been working for the produce industry as a quality advisor for 4 years. For me, it was just a matter of time to reach this point for sorting algorithms. I missed the use of NIR technologies to ensure what is a "bad" or "good" piece of fruit. How fruits are inside is really important (imagine internal browning/breakdown for apples or low Brix degrees for grapes, those defects are not visible). I did my thesis work on non-destructive technologies to measure produce quality and after a year of research, we concluded that spectrums from NIR sensor, plus information from the orchards, and the trip (temp plus time) should give the best results to sort fruit in the right way. Image ML was not a thing back then, but it should help a lot to develop a more robust model that can help costumers with the right product. Most of the costumer's relly on their vision to choose their products, but we cannot measure how are many vegetables just with our eyes. We can not measure parameters like sugar levels, hardness, or fat content (Avocado taste depends on that), and costumers look for the beauty and tasty product.
Anyways, I loved the video guys! I would love to work for any of your projects related to fresh fruits!
