  • Comments at the start refer to an organization for which I made this video!
    In this video, we'll talk about what it means to "catch the string", how the bow hold and the role of various fingers is fundamental to effortless clear articulation, how to find the "Ictus" of a tone, and practicing Colle and Martele stroke with etudes like Kreutzer No.7
    Then, we will look at some passages (mostly 1st violin, but the materials are totally transferrable) from Dvorak New World Symphony.

    This was such a great lesson. I like the way you present this material - very raw and over and over, and just demonstrating how your hand gets softer through the exercises. The ability to put flexible/athletic power into any stringed instrument always ends up requiring the learning process (years, decades) of learning to put “weight” into the string with that combination of arm/wrist/finger strength/speed. I really enjoyed this

    I like your emphasis on catching the string. I start beginners in the 9th grade in my district. Which is crazy but whatev. Getting them as a large class to engage the string in different ways which gradually engineers proper technique and sound production is always a challenge, but having them catch the string is so important. I tell them to grip it and rip it. Helps them to remember. But it's basically the same thing you're doing with the Martele

Would you say that the same articulation would apply to Bruch’s 1st Concerto in G minor, 3rd movement? There, the double stops are played at the frog or close to it and with a bite. Would you apply also collé and martelé? Would you make a video on articulation for this piece as well? Thank you

    Hi Daniel, thank you for the most interesting video's. As a violinist myself I think I do understand most of what your saying. But I'm intrigued with your choice of calling - so to say - the attack of a note Ichthus. So my question is why that word. Bye, Geerten

    • @DanielKurganov
      @DanielKurganov  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      thanks! great question! the ictus is the very instant at which a conductor starts there beat, and while the beat might be a large gesture, the ictus is a very small articulation (domewith the wrist and fingers) which gives clarity to the beat. I see it as remarkably analogous to what we do on the violin.

    Have you tried to put your right pinky on the side of the end of the bow ( half on top and half on side)? Though, different schools...I find the side pinky gives more of a 3 dimensional control. The ring finger adopts the ballance. The side pinky helps straight bowing. Blue Dave.

      in other words, give the bow freedom, don't force the bow, drop it onto the string, it will habe some give, find a way to make it bounce more if you need it to, every bow is different. Happy practicing!
      and also I know I'm late, and take my opinion with a grain of salt, for I am 14 and have been playing for 2 years, but I have made insane progress and have done a lot of research.

      @@user-ww2nd4co2p Thanks for that advice. Once quick question, Does one usually have less pressure at the frog and a bit more approaching the tip?

    • @user-ww2nd4co2p
      @user-ww2nd4co2p 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@garysimkins2179 so the bow is light at the tip and heavy at the frog, so you will have to lift the bow more near the frog, and put more pressure at the tip. if its spiccato you're going for, the balance point is the best spot, sometimes near the frog lighter strokes with a slight bounce in them should do, if its richochet(a very technically advanced bowstroke) then the tip is usually where it will be best executed. really its more about how you do it, there are general guide lines but you have to experiment quite a bit to get it right. I hope this helps and you achieve your goal.

    • @garysimkins2179
      @garysimkins2179 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@user-ww2nd4co2p Yes, I think I worded that incorrectly, as I understand that the weight of the bow is heaviest at the frog. So you answered my question in regards to lighter pressure at the frog and more at the tip. So Thanks again. I played cello for years, and thought this wouldn't be so difficult. I have begun to realize just what a different animal the violin is, and I am enjoying it. At 70, my fingers aren't quick as nimble as when I was 30 however, and I am adjusting to the lightness of the violin bow vs the cello bow. I appreciate your help.

      Yes! I think it’s objectively a superior way of holding the bow.

  • @adi_demian
    @adi_demian 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would NEVER say: "...thumb pushes up." This is not a desirable way of playing, or thinking about sound production. We are actually both pulling/pushing the string, and allowing it to rotate. The pronation is something that should change throughout the bow stroke (less pronounced at the frog, more pronounced at the tip), but the idea should never be to exert downward pressure. I would rather say the hand is like a see-saw with the pinky on one side, index on the other and the thumb as the fulcrum. As the fulcrum is the point of 0 energy, the thumb does/should NOT push upward.

    • @DanielKurganov
      @DanielKurganov  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, technically it’s correct that when you want to expand the sound with weight into the stock, index finger pushes and the thumb is the counterweight. Obviously there are various situations, but that is one of them. I take your point that it’s not how it ‘should be thought of’ but some people need to hear that simplicity, especially if they have a habit of gripping/squeezing the bow with all fingers. I think i provide some nuance on that point through the long video:)
