Also if you going for affordable housing you could standardize the units which would save a lot in design and engineering costs if a large number are built the same. The Same idea as Habitat 67 but with mass timber.
Are we missing out on a benefit by not treating the lumber with oil/wax/stain? I see in your examples that the everything is stained, is that cosmetic?
I'd imagine cost, labor, and designers choice, you can't necessarily take these factory engineered components and spend too much time treating or staining them, in addition a lot of designers just seem to like the organic look. If they were to stain or wax these on site it would take them forever to apply and dry. Not to mention you'd need more skilled labor and not every contractor or laborer is a decent woodworker.

At the sizes of these projects some companies prob just use use the actual lumber instead of a stained color.

@@illuminated2438 a lot of stuff is stronger than steel or concrete per pound, but that doesn't mean there is an advantage to using those materials. it is still weaker than steel and concrete per size, which is a consideration. why do you think carbon emissions are something worth considering? and if a liberal felt like it, they would just paint this as deforestation which has a greater 'carbon' impact than using other materials.
It looks cool to build with. You can get the project done with smaller crews and equipment, according to the video. The builders actually like making them too since it's not as messy. The growing number of wildfires in the US due to our land being over-forrested with small diameter trees that can be used for mass timber building material. Bringing more of this type of industry would also revitalize small rural towns that have been struggling as our economy has shifted to high tech industries. Also surprisingly, mass timber holds up well against fires too, since it chars on the outside while keeping the internal core intact. There might be some downsides that we don't know about yet, but I think it would interesting see more of these projects. @@bjornegan6421

in theory yes, however I doubt any current building code would allow it. Interlocking joints still need to be mechanically attached
