one of my favourite things about modern youtube is watching some rando dissect the differences in approach for rooftop run between two games, and then proceeding to watch a whole-ass 3 hour video detailing their entire personal history with a hedgehog, and enjoying every last second of it
ey, no prob! always fun to hear people talk about funny hedgehogs for excessive periods of time honestly watching this and seeing the similarities & differences in the timeline made me realise it might be fun to make my _own_ video on my personal history with sonic, because ive got a LOT i could say about where that fuckin rats taken me, especially on the internet side of things. the masses must be informed of the sega forums..........
@@Sonnakai Buddy, I know nothing of the Sega Forums and I must be INFORMED, please please do make the video! Once I got into the swing of making it, it got so fun. Do it!
Hey! Thanks a ton for the mentions bro!! I’m super honored to have been shouted out, I’ll always love doing the Jason Griffith voice to give this current generation the same experience that we grew up with back in the day, it’s awesome to give people that uplifting feeling when they hear my voice along side my friends, we do this with passion for the character and with HUGE respect to the original VAs! much love! 🦔💙
Your voice is phenomenal, seriously. When I started looking at comic dubs (landed on your channel as well), it kinda shocked me that people were doing Griffith voices, since I grew up during a time where people did NOT enjoy it, and mainly parodied it. But when I heard you and Jehtt's performances, I realized that people could pull it off, in a way that honored the original performance, AND even with its own flair. That was def a big realization for me, so I had to give you a shout out, you guys seriously blew my mind lol.
@@Ajakes lol thanks man! Jason Griffith’s version of Sonic is one of THE MOST recognizable iterations of his voice in the community, right next to Ryan Drummond. I want to keep bringing more light onto Jason’s performances by continuing to give it more evolution and life through my own voiceovers
That was such a loving piece on my work. Thank you so much for supporting all the way. Really makes everything worthwhile! You'll be happy to know another Jurassic Park short is right around the corner! Take care!
Incredible! Thank you so much for all your fantastic work over the years, and can't wait for what's coming next. I don't think "kid-me" all the way back at my grandparent's house in Sweden would ever believe that one day you'd leave a comment on one of my videos. It means the world, thanks for checking it out, and so pumped for the next JP short!
Thank you, I'm sure a lot of people will be scared of the length of this video and only read the comments, but your explanation at the end about why you want to be called Adam the Hedgehog from now on was very introspective, very cool!
I don't know who you are, but I seen this in my recommended, and watched the whole, (pushing) 3 hours, video. Wearing a smile, laughing at the jokes, and feeling a bit of nostalgia from remembering my history with the blue rodent. This video is super well made, it blew my mind within the first 5 minutes that art was done for every line, to the point it blended into just listening to the narrative until writing this comment, this is definitely a video I'm putting in my "rewatch while working/eating", that usually stream vods or other (Sonic) reviews go into. Also, now I'm forcing myself to watch Metropolis in a bit, despite how tired I am, it sounds super interesting to check out and my ass will forget to watch it if I sleep now. Amazing work, I'd give you a bugs bunny big kiss if it was possible.
Eyy, thanks for the comment! I'm surprised some people are able to finish it, I figured they'd just click on their fav game and move on, so the fact that you watched the whole damn thing means a ton, thank you. Really, really appreciate it. I tried to segment it a ton so if people prefer to rewatch while working/eating, they could easily hop in and out (I personally love those types of videos, so the fact that I made it into your playlist, I'M HONORED). Also, future thanks for giving Metropolis a shot! Fair warning, it's super basic lol, and needs a ton of work, but even just a viewing makes my drawing hand happy lol. Idk if I'll ever be able to "" it, but I def love attempting it!
Feel so very honoured from this shout-out as that evil platypus, Dr. Starline! Though he had very little screen time, he is a whole lot of fun to voice! 💯
Dude so much of what you said and your personal Sonic journey mirrors my own! Heros being the first proper sonic game, being over hyped and bummed out over 06, kinda skipping the storybook games, going back to the old games and thinking "this is cool but, Sonic Adventure is where it all starts for me" falling in love with Generations, loving Sonic and hos friends just talking and doing stuff together, and (most importantly) Chao Garden totally not being my thing (personally I think it's hella over hyped tbh). Like I straight up thought about leaving the vid running and jotting down another line in the comment section every time you brought up a piacular thought or something I totally related to, but that would just be me commenting on the entire vid lol SO with that I hope you're doing well, and I hope this vid starts gaining the traction it rightfully deserves!
Holy shit, someone else with the same Chao Garden opinions as me. Are you safe? Have they found you yet? Please don't go outside and just use the escape tunnels. We can't be SEEN on the internet. Crazy that we had such a similar history! I'm glad the video got to you, it seems to be gaining a bit after the level comparison, and when people come and leave their own timelines, it makes my day. Thanks for commenting and bravely stating your Chao Garden takes, now GO. RUN!
This is your best work, and it was super interesting to go through your own history with Sonic. I've been going through the video over the past days since I've been busy but also wanted to give it proper focus and not just listen to it in the background. I was really into Sonic as a kid and wrote fanfictions, but very quickly stopped caring right after Sonic Adventure 2 when nothing lived up to that. I've of course always been aware of the Sonic fandom, but in that ironic "haha they still care about Sonic"-way, and this felt like it gave proper credit to all of the great work I've missed, and attributed a lot of great things to the Sonic fandom which I've otherwise only seen as immature and cringe. I think with all of that in mind, you have what it takes to make an interesting Sonic AU since you made me care about Sonic again.
I really appreciate you watching the whole thing, I designed it to be viewed in chunks (similar to The Japan Trip), as it's hard to find 3 full hours to kill lol, but the fact that you got to finish it means a lot. I'm glad this helped shine a light on some of the brighter spots of the Sonic fandom, it's difficult to shake the immaturity of the franchise because it's been through the ringer so many times. However, I think we're getting to the point where Sonic has lasted through multiple generations, where most people have sort of reference with the franchise. The ridicule is shifting, as much more people are understanding why Sonic would appeal to someone. And since the Sonic franchise is so spread out, it's never difficult to peek back in: movies, games, comics, even online content, it's all unabashedly there, ready to be taken at any pace you prefer. And thank you for commenting on my AU, it means so much to me, especially coming from you and all of your work. Even now, I have that ever-present doubt that it's not worth it. But I think your videos prove just how essential artist expression is, and I don't want that to slip away again. I hope to have fun with it the same way I did back when I was a kid. Ultimately, I want to make art for myself, and share it with others.
Great work! Always get a little giddy when the OVA is brought up. Metal’s design has never looked better imo and the soundtrack (especially Look Alike) has never left my head even years later. Glad you’re still making content, you always put out great stuff!
More people gotta check out the OVA, it's such a fun little time capsule (with one of my fav interpretations of Metal Sonic), also the soundtrack IS incredible. People have ripped or found specific tracks (which I used in the video) but there's still so many I wish we got clean versions of, like when Sonic and Tails are first taking off in the Tornado. Appreciate the watch, and thanks for sticking around!
@@Ajakes You mean the one that plays when they’re entering the runway? Love that one! Yeah I would love to see the soundtrack used more. I know the full version of Look-Alike was found a couple years ago (and I think the shortened version is on one of the Sonic albums) but the instrumental stuff is so unique and fun in its own right. Definitely should be more easily available. Keep up the great work!
Wow I never expected a sonic video over 2 hours here. This is a very impressive video going over the 20 years of sonic. Similar to my sonic videos I’ve made in 2015 to 2016 before it was deleted off in 2021 due my channel being connect to an old school account. I really how you incorporate animated stuff into real life skits in your latest videos.
My goodness what a great watch! I just came from the Unleashed vs Generations vid (so happy you finally played Unleashed) and I have to say, this was so refreshing. You have both an outsider and insider view on the series and that's so important bc it can be hard to view Sonic in a more casual, laidback way when you're miles deep in the rabbit hole as I am. I appreciate how earnest and fun this video was. No one complaining about quill size or what blue color looks the best on Sonic. Just straight vibes. Also glad you didn't immediately shit on the more "cringe" aspects of the series like shipping or fanworks. I love pairing these goofballs together and writing up stories - the series just lends itself well to these expressive avenues! This comment is long enough but I'm invested in seeing what you create next!
Thank you! I'm happy I finally played Unleashed too lol, Generations was feeling lonely at the top. Thanks for checking out the video! I wanted to be very fair to people's preferences (while still being funny), so I wanted to avoid crushing anyone's personal enjoyment of these games. And the "cringe" aspects I think are honestly stepping stones to unfiltered creative freedom, kids making their OCs take it seriously and they SHOULD, it's a fantastic way to learn a lot of different things (writing / drawing / interacting with online communities tbh, ideally in a safe way lol). So when I see OCs continuing to exist as I'm older, it just makes me smile. Kid's are inspired and trying things out! It even got ME to try things out again! And it's a ton of fun! Thanks for watching the video, and if you have any fanworks you wrote up, I'd love to read them!
@@Ajakes Ah I wish I was more into fan creations and such but I focus more on drawing and creating stories for the canon characters, rather than original works. Still! I appreciate the invitation to share nonetheless!
DUUDE, I came across your channel recently with you Japan video from 2017 and your editing style is insane. To make videos as long as this in a relatively short amount of time is insane!!
Just finished watching this video after checking out your level analysis yesterday, this is the best Sonic video I've seen on TH-cam. I loved every second of it, so thank you for making it! I got into Sonic when I was 3 years old on my Dad's Xbox 360 playing masterpieces such as Sonic Superstars Tennis and Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing (which I still adore, so you can expect another pipe bomb shortly for implying it WASN'T the best game to ever grace our planet). I really hope this channel continues to grow and you can turn it into a full-time deal because with the passion you put into your videos and the delivery of the humour, it's all just so neat.
My poor mailbox can't handle another DELIVERY. As I've been hunting for more Sonic games, I managed to pick up a copy of Superstars Tennis just for kicks, so maybe next time around I'll have to talk about it... It's funny how we all got introduced to him, I always assume it's a mainline title first, but lots of people learn about Sonic through the spinoffs or handhelds only. But that's a timeline I know nothing about, so I wanna learn it! Thanks for the wonderful comment, I hope to make this a full-time deal too, if my job involved talking to people in my comments about Sonic all day, I would be a very happy man (hedgehog)
Thanks youtube for recommending me the rooftop run video so I could find this gem of a video. I remember playing and finishing Sonic Adventure DX for the first time when I was a kid and now that I think about it I don't know how did I beat SADX with me barely knowing english at that time (my mother language is polish), and as a kid I learned from my dad how to pirate games (mostly stuff but I liked playing games so that's what I did) and I actually never had that problem with having only Windy Walley music playing in every stage.
I don't usually have much for additive comment's but, by the end of this video I was swelling up into tears. The impact Sonic has had on my and many others lives is just so incredible. It got me to draw, talk to others about the things I love, and even voice act! (sometimes squeezing in some creative writing here and there) I wouldn't be so passionate about the things I love if it wasn't for those 2000 to 2010 era games getting me into the Blue Blur. Drawing Game Land Sonic from Sonic Colors in wacky poses as a kid. Talking about Sonic facts with people I've never met before and gaining some form of confidence from it (whatever I called it when I was younger) And doing funny voices while playing Super Smash Bros with my siblings (I bet you could never guess who I was every time we played) Even if my interest in the actual SEGA made games is dwindling, My love for this radical rodent will never weaver. I love Sonic. Loved the video and have a wonderful rest of your morning evening afternoon and night
Wow! You don’t know how much this means to me, I didn’t think anyone was gonna watch the whole thing AND tell me about their own Sonic journey! Sounds like we had a similar path too haha. So happy he got us passionate about drawing, discussing (and voice acting, hey-o). It’s also interesting to hear which games impacted you, as I’ve never even played Colors, and yet here it is, clearly influencing you. I own it digitally so I should probably give it a shot, and figure out what GAME LAND SONIC is. Also the “confidence from discussions” is a great point, I think when you’re really passionate about something, your speech becomes assertive without even realizing it. And also agree on the recent Sega games haha, nothing has wowed me BUT just like you, it never reduced any of my love for the character. Also also I listen to that Generations credits theme all the time (it’s not on the official soundtrack whhhhyyy), and that last shout out always makes me smile. You didn’t make my day, you made my week. I made the video for this kind of response, someone who could share their own life with Sonic. Such a fun read, thanks for checking it out AND leaving such a great comment! Cheers (And I also attempted to main Sonic, and I sped off the sides like a billion times)
@@Ajakes I love you man, audience member to content creator conversations are just so far and few between now-a-day's that this is the first real comment I've left on a video in THREE WHOLE YEARS. I was just so moved and was constantly smiling and laughing to your video. (also the Sonic 06 life crushing realization was so relatable, but for me it was when colors ultimate was shown off and came out lmao pretty late but I was just used to releases happening without me knowing for a while that it didn't hit me until then) I'll be following your journey with the rest of your really entertaining content style, I'm overjoyed that you showed up in my recommended. I've never felt such a deep connection with a piece of content before. Thank you for reading and replying my man.
@@SpiralWaffles That's like my main hope with these videos, I just wanna talk with you guys and hear what you gotta say, I learn so much. And thank you for breaking your comment-fast with THIS video, I'm honored. Interesting about Colors, I have heard that the Ultimate edition was noooooot what some people were expecting. It's the only version I own cause I unfortunately don't have a Wii, I would love to compare the 2 of them. But thanks for tagging along, and get well soon!
I don't know whether to be proud or horrified to say that I grew up with Sonic 06 (alongside Mega Collection and SADX) and unironically liked it as a kid, I want to reality check myself at some point but I have no idea where the ol' 360 went
HA, sounds like our timelines were pretty close. I'd be so curious to hear what you think if you ever did retry 06. Even if you can understand its flaws now, I wonder if the nostalgia would still make it fun
2:21:38 HAHA! Bro, thanks for actually expressing your thoughts on my editing. And don't worry, i don't care if you credit me or not, My work is already in the credits and I was happy with what i did so....yeah lol. Also, Major props on the Mario Kart Gamer Dude jokes XD
@@Ajakes of course man! No problem. Going to be honest I don’t like the IDW Sonic comics and like you, I’m also an Archie Sonic fan lol 😂 but I’m willing to voice/edit the comics for the sake and fun and improvement heh heh. Love yo video, bro 👍😎
@@TheEggPaladin Interesting! I would've never thought from your edits haha. I actually haven't delved too deep into Archie (nor IDW) but I do want to attempt Archie further because it has such an extensive history + people really really love it, and I hear they do some interesting things with Sonic and the other characters. I think I just need to find a beginners guide and GO for it.
@@Ajakes oh totally bro. I highly recommend it! Archie Sonic has so much interesting lore and plots that not even the games and comprehend it. They actually give Sonic and friends ACTUALLY family members! The games refuse to do that except for Vanilla (Cream’s mom) but yeah thanks for the compliment and yeah great chatting with ya, bruh 😎 👍😂
Dude I’m only 2 hours in and I’ve had to stop to rewatch some of this video. It’s so funny. This is such a relatable sonic story. God this video rocks.
Wow another sonic fan who also likes rock band, lol, as a teenager (yes), i think it's cool because the dark age I missed out on a bit becuase of my age, but my era of sonic games aint the best, this is one of my favorite TH-cam videos, and it's cool to see people who like this series
Are you also someone who wanted Sonic tracks IN Rock Band? Cause I prayed for and like all my life lol. Very curious what got you Sonic if your era of Sonic games wasn't the best, was it the surrounding characters or maybe 1 game in particular? Thanks for the kind words, its fun to meet someone who likes Sonic AND Rock Band as well lol, appreciate the watch!
@@AjakesSorry about the late response, it was sonic 1 on the Wii virtual console on the Wii as a tiny man, eventually I got sonic adventure 2 on the family xbox and sonic unleashed on the family PS3 both in like 2014, also I was an ipad kid but thankfully the youtube i watched wasnt the slop, I then developed and addiction
2:28 and 2:47:14 Thanks for putting me in this video! I'M the Infinite stan! His extremely edgy facade is just so endearing to me in a way. He's basically a insecure loser hiding behind a mask, lying to himself to appear cool and edgy, when really he just got kicked by Shadow once and immediately broke down, but I love him exactly FOR that. I REALLY hope he shows up in Shadow Generations. If Mephiles got a 2nd chance and post Generations content is on the table, Infinite deserves one too.
I don't even know ANYTHING about Infinite and I want him in Shadow Generations. Glad I found the one Infinite stan out there, I need to eventually beat Forces and fall in love with him because THAT is a ringing endorsement in my eyes!
@@Ajakes Granted, some of it IS me making up the character in my head, Forces didn't really do the best job at getting it across. But I'm PRETTY sure this is the intent, and its actually a really unique direction for a Sonic character. What really sells me on this direction is the lyrics to his theme song. It's literally just him projecting for 3 minutes straight. And his power is literally projecting things into reality if you think about it.
Dude, this video was AMAZING and super underrated! I loved every second of it, the drawings, editing, writing, everything was fantastic! This and the Rooftop Run video are some of the most unique and creative videos I’ve seen in a long time. Keep up the great work!
This is probably gonna be one of my favorite videos ever. I will always eat up sincere autobiographical personal histories with formative media. Also this was funny as hell.
Thanks a ton! Those autobiographical videos are my favorites because they stay honest and get subjective. That was my goal with this video, I'm really glad you liked it!
I’m not joking your new take on Metropolis made me burst out laughing many times for how out there they are in the best way possible! They’re so charming and radiates that “domesticated sonic parody stories” of the late 2000s! I would love to maybe see these ideas come to life in maybe a comic or a story board! They’re absolutely charming and wonderful! ^v^ As for Eden, maybe you can rework her as like a symbol of a bygone era for eggman’s robots, the kind of models they don’t do anymore. And so she tries to find a new place and purpose with the new society! Almost like (in an allegory sense) she’s a VHS in a world where everyone is a Blu Ray now! Just throwing some ideas to maybe help out hehe
Yooo, I didn't think anyone was gonna comment more on Metropolis! That warms my heart, thank you so much. I'm glad it radiates that energy, cause that's what I was going for. I think all those newgrounds animations rubbed off on me lol. I have been drawing more stuff for them at night now, and have a couple of shorts written out, I just need to find some time to storyboard them 😔 It's something I def wanna work on before the year ends, now that Sonic is back in my brain again. And thank you for the Eden help! I've still been trying to figure her out, so I appreciate the suggestions, and the vibe you mentioned is what I want to try and go for with her. Thanks so much for the comment, it made me want to draw more of them tonight!
28:18 well to be fair classic sonic was always meant to talk (sonic cd and the old arcade games make him talk, and he says stuff in the jp manuals) but then generations silenced him for some reason
I came from the Rooftop Run video and I loved this video. I have always wanted to make a video about my history with Sonic, maybe in 2030 I will make a video all about my 20 year history with the franchise. It all began when I got Sonic Classic Collection for the DS back in 2010. Things have never been the same since.
You totally should! No need to wait, there's always a LOT to say lol. I actually got Sonic Classic Collection recently for the DS, being trying it out. It's a trip. Thanks for watching both vids!
omg u going off abt your sonic hyperfixation is inspiring me to do the same. I'm also intrigued by your other longform videos. I would LOVE to see more! Also I would love to see you analyze all of unleashed!!! Your love for sonic is so relatable as someone whose younger and going through the fandom for the past 6ish years!!!! Keep it up man!
Thank you! And don't worry, now that I know people are digging it, I'm tackling ALL those Unleashed stages. Might even have to do an Unleashed retrospective too if this video gets a sequel lol.
@@Ajakes oh I’ll DEFINITELY be here when you do!!! I’d also love to see your takes on Sonic x shadow when that comes out too! ALSO NO IDEA YOU WERE THE SUPERMEGA EDITING VIDEO GUY TOO THATS CRAZY !!! I watched that forever ago
My story with sonic starts in the late 00s when ibwas a kid. My parents got me sonic unleashed wii and sonic classic collection as well as watching sonic x. I played other sonic games and been hooked ever since. One of my favorites franchise ever. Cant wait for the thrid movie.😊
So cool! I have yet to start Unleashed, but I heard that the Wii version was very different than the other console releases, did you ever eventually try those? Also, thanks for watching, and can't wait for the 3rd movie too! (can't believe I released this video literally right before the Keanu announcement lol)

@@Ajakes oh, it was a Sonic production toy I was given a gift when I was a toddler. im in my middle 30's now, so it's a treasured trophy. like your VHS :)
In the least weird way possible, I don't think I've ever felt this validated from a TH-cam video and I just wanna express how much I adored my experience watching it. 3 hours couldn't have been better spent. I never thought I'd find a video so concisely deep diving into such ultra specific corners of fully personalized Sonic-related experiences, I never thought I'd see someone else talk about Windy Valley playing throughout the entirety of pirated SA1, or the unexplainable feeling of seeing BalenaProductions cancel, uncancel, redo, and repurpose Sonic in Jurassic Park so often over the years, or the mid-2010s Sonic AUs/fanworks that we tried to create back in the day that got us so shameful but were oh so fun to make, all in a video that has so much love, care, and pure talent poured into each and every second of it. Like, seriously, no words can do justice towards how happy your art and editing makes my heart feel, man. :') Basically yeah just really needed to say that this entire video means the world to me, stuff like this is my favorite kind of content in existence. Just something made purely from the heart oozing with so much care and love. Thank you so much! :)
Oh my god, thank you for the comment! And for the full watch, that's incredible! It means so much to me to hear your own experiences, plus the fact that we encountered such specific similar things (so sorry for your Windy Hill trauma), it's insane! I spent a lot of time on this video, I feared after releasing that it would just kinda coast by and do nothing, but reading these comments makes me soooo happy. Thank you for picking up on all the little things, it's like a dream come true haha. Thanks for watching and taking the time to respond!!
@@Ajakes It's my pleasure! Seeing videos like this being made in my lifetime is a dream come true for me lol To live a whole life of experiences relating to one specific subject, to hold those experiences so near and dear to my heart, and then to learn about someone else's own experiences with that specific subject in such a longform and well-made manner? It's something special, man. Genuinely can't express how much I adored this. Sorry if I sound like a broken record, but I owe you my utmost gratitude for this, Ajakes!
@@Snoc75 Not at all, it means the world to me. Thank you for the heartfelt reply. (side-note, you're writing is very expressive and affecting, if you've never written and voiced your own video, you should totally give it a shot!)
@@Ajakes Aw, thanks for the compliment! I've actually had a notepad full of video concepts and ideas that I've been wanting to create for a few years now. I even began recording some! I've always loved writing and editing and trying to get my thoughts out there in a concise fashion. Computer's out of whack at the moment but hopefully soon I'll be able to pump them out, it's been a hobby I've really wanted to get into, means so much how you took notice over the writing of just my simple appreciation messages.
@@Snoc75 Dude, that's awesome! Once your computer is back in action you totally should! I'd be very interested to see what those are. Hell, even if its something I know nothing about haha, if the passion is there it always gets me hooked.
I was gonna write smth stupid and funny but this honestly is a great vid, a friend of mine said it's what got her back into the series too. Basically had the same-ish journey and am just excited to see where things go from here. That blue funny rat guy sure does have a cool aura, though my Tawakening turned into appreciating tails as my fav lol.
Haha, thanks for checking it out, I'm happy to hear it got people back into Sonic, as I went through something similar. And it sounds like you had a PRIME tawakening, you skipped over the blue rat aura and homed in on the originator, insane move
I feel as if there is a large, gaping hole in my chest after finishing this.. (Sonic 06 reference??) Super great video btw, loved every bit of it. The way it’s structured and how you flow between each and every sub-subsection is buttery smooth. Fantastic. Oh, sorry I meant: You’re awesome. Don’t let anyone get you down. Please make more stuff for me.
I wasnt gonna comment, but after watching all the way through i couldnt help it! I too have a very special story of how i came to be a Sonic super fan. I grew up in a house where we didnt have games or game consoles...just one school PC. My first real game was also Adventure, but the DX PC port...i played yhe crap out of it not with a mouse but with the keyboard...😱🫠 Looking back not sure how the heck i did that. I lived in Okinawa Japan at the time so getting access to the comics in English was tough, but i started collecting the Archie comics and still have them to this day!! SA1 and SA2 will always be my favorites and have the strongest nostalgia ties...but ive played almost every mainline game. The part that really made me smile though, was hearing how Sonic got you into art. That is also my story! I loved the design and chardcter of Rouge in SA2 so much that i borrowed the game booklet from my neighbor and traced the art onto printer paper using the sun and a window😜 Fast forward about 8 or 9 years...i never stopped loving drawing Sonic, got into art so much from it that i actually majored in Studio Art in college! Know as a 30 something, i can draw almost every character from memory without really thinking about it. Ive also been to the Symphony Orchestra concert, and am learning how to play Crush 40 stuff on the guitar. To say Sonic has had an impact on my whole life is an understatement...and now it makes me happy to see younger generations getting into the games that still bring me so much joy as i get "old" lol. 💜💜
Yooo, thanks for sharing! Super curious to know how growing up in Japan was different than growing up in America in regards to all things SONIC. He was heavily marketed towards the west, so I always wondered if they tried to shine him in a different light in Japan (kinda like the differences between the cover art back in the Genesis days). Also speaking a bit about art: I think the first "stories" I ever came up with were AU Sonic stuff as a kid lol, that's why I smile seeing kids today still designing their own OCs, he's an easy introduction to many creative passions ("drawing" your OC, "writing" your OC's super deep cool backstory, etc.) similar to what you had with Rouge. Nothing was gonna stop you from drawing her, to the point where you were using sunlight to fuel your creative passion. That's great! And the little things like that sorta snowball together, sooner or later your majoring in Art for college. I'm excited to continue enjoying Sonic as I get older, and meeting more great people in the community. Super jealous of your Symphony visit, good luck with Live and Learn on guitar, and thanks again for the wonderful comment!
And after the span of 5 days I have finally reached the end of this video and felt like commenting. Seriously man, this channel is underrated. You put so much effort in these videos and you are so gosh darn positive and energetic. Keep it up, these are fantastic! Anyway, I wanna share my encounters with the blue blur himself so here comes a big wall of text for ya. :) 2005? - My first sonic game was Sonic advance 3. I don't exactly remember when I first played it. I was like 4... maybe 3? I don't remember when I got my Gameboy Advance which is why I believe It was from a very young age. Sonic Advance 3 might also be the very first game I ever played... or Shrek 2. eh whatever, the point is Sonic Advance 3 was my first exposure to Sonic and it was AWSOME! I loved everything about this game. The hub world, the music, the ability to pick a character and a partner of your choice. I would suck at the game and die a lot, but thanks to it's autosave and bonus stages that offered extra lives I would eventually reach the end of the game. it probably took me like two years to reach the end but I definitely remember reaching the end and beating the final boss. sadly not the super sonic boss. in fact I wouldn't learn about super sonic until much later. I have a specific memory of my dad looking at me play and pointing out that I was Sonic and he was impressed by how fast I was going. looking back now, I know he was just pointing out the obvious but as a kid I liked the Idea that my cool gameplay was seen as impressive. 2006- I would have a DVD that contained 3 episodes of the one, the only, SONIC UNDERGROUND!!! This was my exposure to Julio White as sonic the hedgehog (and Manic... and Sonia) the DVD contained the first episode, an episode where they explore a spooky mansion, and an episode where they run into the home of their mother. I really liked this episodes and from what I remember the show wasn't that bad. in fact I like the third episode because manic genuinely starts to feel like he belongs in the town and has to choose to continue traveling with sonic or stay behind. 2007 - SEGA All stars Tennis My uncle, who lives with us, would buy himself an Xbox 360 and it came bundled with a game... Feeding Frenzy.... and also SEGA All Stars Tennis. I would BEG him to let me play a because it had SONIC! he was chill about it and would let me play the game. I was blown away, sonic was in 3D, sonic was in HD, sonic was YELLOW???!!! yup, my first exposure to super sonic was by his All-star move in the game. Looking back, I love that the most mind blowing, coolest version of the sonic cast and world was in a freaking TENNIS GAME. lol. this game also exposed me to other sonic characters like Shadow. And of course, other SEGA IP, like super monkey ball, Knights, and Jet Set Radio. I've been listening to Hideki Naganuma since I was 5 and still to this day, I LOVE his music. 2008- Parents got me my own Xbox 360 because I couldn't stop bothering my uncle and he probably wanted to play splinter cell in peace 2008 - Sonic 06 (no not joking) It was a literal birthday present and you know what, I loved this game. As a kid, this was like, the big grand epic of Sonic. it had the HD visuals of the tennis game, but now with a story, and a world, and stakes. It felt like a big budget movie. playing through it was like this grand experience that I never felt before. So when I finally reach the end and beat the boss to an orchestral version of his world. I remember genuinely celebrating this moment. as if it was a momentous occasion. I loved the music, I loved playing as sonic, shadow, and Silver. for a short moment in time, this was my favorite sonic game ever. 2009 - I think I tried sonic rush on a cousins DS, loved the soundtrack (I wonder why) :) 2010 - I discover CW4Kids and with that, I discovered Sonic X... and Yu Gi Oh. But seriously I would watch Sonic X religiously. I remember it would always be on Saturday mornings at 9 am. I was so invested in the story. Chris not wanting to let sonic go home, the relationship between Cosmo and Tails, it was all cool to me. This was my exposure to the adventure plots so whenever I would see people make references or parodies online I thought they were references to Sonic X and not an actual sonic game that existed. lol. speaking of... 2010 - I discover what an "internet" and with my cousin, we do what we all do as kids... we type "funny ____" in the google search bar and of course I had to know what Funny Sonic would lead me to. This is where I found out about Sonic Paradox and the Sonic Short Volumes. My personal favorite being volume 2 because of that one knuckles song. I think i'll stop here for now. once I started typing, I didn't want to stop but I think this hits most of my early childhood experiences with Sonic T Hedgehog.
This was an awesome read, thank you for plotting it out so well! It's so funny to me how people get into this franchise, I was convinced that it was the Adventure games for EVERYONE, but the more I hear, it is almost always either the spinoffs or a compilation. Which is great because those are typically the smallest slivers of Sonic history, and yet they excite kids to go find more Sonic content. Never did I suspect: Advance 3 to Underground(??) to SEGA ALL STARS TENNIS to be your path, but everyone's got their own story, and that's the best part. Thank you for the big wall of text, haha, I seriously enjoyed it.
so happy i came across this video in my recommended, I myself have been returning to sonic with the upcoming generations game and movie coming up soon but I couldnt help but smile and laugh watching this whole video. I was born in 03 and damn it sonic has basically been apart of me ever since i came into this world. My dad was a huge gamer and basically gave me a controller as early as i can remember. to be honest i dont know what the first sonic game i ever played was, like i said he has always been apart of my life as early as i remember. I do remember getting sonic adventure 1 and 2 for my gamecube and I could never get that far into these games but damn those opening scenes were the coolest thing, I also played the sonic collection games on gamecube both mega and gems collection so from very early on I had encountered many of the games sonic had to offer even if i couldnt get past the 2nd zone for any of the classics. I also played heros and could never stop singing sonic heros and also I remember us getting shadow the hedgehog for my dads ps2 and my jaw dropped seeing shadow load up the gun and sonic collapsing to the ground in the opening scene. Also I couldnt help but laugh when you talked about 06 as this in my little kid mind was the greatest thing to ever happen with that opening of sonic saving the day and made me love him even more. Also i loved how you talked about newsgrounds ive never heard anyone discuss before and it lit something inside of me as i consumed too much sonic content in my early days and i was way too young to be on there xD but many core memories were formed. I hope to hear some of your thoughts on unleashed on the rooftop run video as i yet to see it but to me that is probably my favorite sonic game i ever played. I actually remember my dad and I going to get it at our gamestop when it released and watching that opening scene and listening to endless possibilities but yeah ive consumed as much sonic content as I possibly can in my life from playing all the games and watching all the ova and shows. Last thing i wanna say is i love your art, I find it so charming and sorry i rambled for a bit i just can go on on xD
This comment section encourages rambling lol, don't worry. I feel like a lot of people born in that era were hit with the Adventures first, and then experienced classic Sonic through the collections, it was a lucky time for those release windows, you essentially got all of Sonic's history up to 2004. And once we hit 2005, Sonic collapsing as Shadow loaded a gun was like the ultimate jawdrop for me, all I could think was "he BEAT the happy cool guy! Ya can't do that!!!" and I was hooked. It was the perfect amount of edge I needed to jump into that game. And yeah, I was waaayyy too young for Newgrounds at that time, and animators were NOT holding back when it came to adult content lol, but that's the story of the early internet. Excited for you to see the Rooftop Run video, spoiler alert, I LOVED Unleashed too. And thanks for enjoying the doodles!
WOW THANK YOU FOR DRAWING ME??? AND SHOUTING US OUT??? YEA TRULY I ONLY VOICED ORBOT BECAUSE I WANTED TO CONTRIBUTE AS WELL AS I COULD, SO I HOPE YOU LIKED MY ORBOT LMAO
@@Ajakes THANK YOU!!!! Heres a trivia bit for you... DarkCloud, the Kit you love so much!! I gave him a Kitsunami Pin from Sonic Expo and mailed it to him
1:55:37 "I'm 'bout to ingest the ultimate life form" don't we do that every day Also 2 hours in and this is a great video so far, certainly the longest video I've ever watched (aside from those old 3 hour long Sonic8000 longplays of Blue Knuckles/Red Sonic in Sonic 3). If you can keep me and my low attention span engaged for 3 hours then you have a good channel. Keep up the great videos!
CONSUMING THE ULTIMATE LIFE FORM DAILY WILL RESULT IN DEATH It's a long vid, so I really appreciate you attempting the whole thing. I totally understand if people can't lol (hence why I chopped it up so much). Thanks for the comment!
This video is incredible. As an utterly deranged Sonic-enjoyer who is around the same age as you and also began participating online much, much too early, I related to a lot of what you had to say, especially the way you engaged with Sonic content online. This account is very old and I've never changed my username, so "Thessa the Cat" is probably pretty indicative of where I was at in 2008 when I first barged into the internet and started both engaging with and creating Sonic nonsense. I sincerely appreciate all the effort that went into this video and I honestly think it's one of my favorites that I have ever seen. Thanks for making it! Since we're talking Sonic experiences I'd like to give my perspective a little. My history with Sonic feels a bit different from a lot of folks- my dad actually had a Genesis already by the time I was born in the mid-90s, so I've been watching and playing Sonic games since before I was even capable of forming thoughts. And from there I got the Dreamcast, the Gamecube, a GBA, I subscribed to the Archie comics, I watched AOSTH, I saw Sonic X premiere on the FoxBox... In retrospect I was completely obsessed. But I'm bringing all that up not to brag about how complete my Sonic resume was as a 9 year old, but rather to say that I think it informed my perspective on this series as it stands today. I've known since I was little that Sonic is like, 8000 different things simultaneously. It's amusing to think about how I'd bounce from playing Adventure 1, to reading the Archie comics, to watching AOSTH, to playing Sonic 3&K.. yadda yadda. Effectively, it's made me always have some kind of baseline interest in basically every arm of the whole series. Even if I don't *love* a particular aspect of Sonic, I will always find it fascinating no matter what. I used to actively mock pretty much everything about Shadow 05 and Sonic 06, but you BET I'm excited out of my mind that Shadow Generations is bringing alllllll that stuff back! Anyway, there are so many things you said throughout this video that I thought in the moment "Oh, I would love to comment on that!" but if I do, I'll be forcing someone out there to read a truly horrifyingly lengthy essay. So instead, because you mentioned Archie throughout this video, I would heartily recommend checking out the Tumblr blog "ThanksKenPenders"! It sounds like a joke account but it really morphs into a fantastic retrospective and critique of the series, and a truly fantastic history lesson on Archie Sonic's strangeness and all of the bizarre legal issues surrounding it. However, if you don't want to read someone else's retrospective before reading Archie for yourself, they also have a super helpful Reading Order/Guide that I use whenever I go back and read Archie stuff!
Pre-2010 Sonic animations on youtube, you deserve a SUPER gold star for that one. I've had some people reveal to me that their original names online were just based off of their Sonic OCs and it stuck, which I find hilarious and also kinda endearing. WE CAN'T SHAKE IT. Cool that we had such a similar timeline for the Sonic internet, but you kicked my ass in the game department. That's a LOT of diverse Sonic for 9! But if I had that level of access, I wouldn't let up either. I do think the wide range of Sonic content we consumed at a young age sorta prepped us for any changes that came later. I mean, we saw Sonic at so many different angles, I kinda expect him to get reworked every 5 years at this point lol. And I kinda welcome it too! I love that Sonic has so many different interpretations, it sorta signals to the fans that they can go nuts when imagining their own adventures. Thanks for the rec on Archie, I'll check out the blog! Kinda like IDW, I think I just need an insane arc or something to draw me in, and then start from the beginning. A reading guide is a huge help. And don't sweat the essay comments, if you scroll down, I've been writing them too lol. Thanks for sharing!
@@Ajakes Haha, thank you. All those Sonic animations I made back in the day are so ancient, and honestly embarrassing to watch back, but to this day I still occasionally get stray comments from folks mentioning that they liked them a lot when they were younger. Which definitely makes me feel both a little old, and also a little bit pleased. I definitely know that all the dumb Sonic fan animations I saw in the 2000s have never left my head either! Which does remind me- it surprised me a lot to see Sonic Comix mentioned in this video! I used to love that series to death! And seeing it again really jogged my memory- wayyy back in the day, I was Tails' voice actor in Sonic Comix 4. Well, sort of, episode 4 never ended up coming out in full aside from a little teaser. And my teenage self could certainly not voice act to save my life-- but anyway! What a nostalgia bomb. lol. If I could recommend any part of Archie Sonic to give you a taste, my personal favorite is the post-reboot, Ian Flynn-written four issue "Champions" arc, which starts with issue #268. It has everything I love about the comics-- tying together completely disparate story elements from the games, an absurd amount of characters, and super expressive art! It loosely adapts the story of Sonic the Fighters, which itself is taking place within a much larger, longer adaptation of the events of Sonic Unleashed-- and it even works in elements of AOSTH and the Game Gear games, somehow! As for pre-reboot Archie... I quite enjoy the "Return to Angel Island" arc (which I believe is also 4 issues), which is crazy and has some of the wackiest, best artwork of that era of the comics done by Jon Gray who still does work for IDW Sonic today. The story's a little nuts but it's certainly very nice to look at!
I LOVE SONIC RAHHHHHHHHHHHH came here from your unleashed video! i really enjoyed that one and this one. was wondering about the lack of sonic frontiers mention, especially during the tails' portion, and i was surprised to hear you hadn't finished it. when you do finish frontiers i'd love to hear your thoughts about it. i really like this style of video, the little doodles paired with game clips made it very entertaining.
I eventually did finish Frontiers along with Unleashed and CD after finishing this video. And I got a LOT of thoughts, but I might have to save that for its own video ha. Generally though, I had a great time, I was surprised how operable Sonic felt in the air (that's normally where I always mess up in all his games, LANDING him as he's coming down), and I really enjoyed how they tailored a lot of the open world's exploration to small courses you get to run through. Just having fun and platforming can send you to your next object, or help you complete challenges and so forth. I also think the character direction they went in with everyone was fresh too, I'm a guy who always loves when they switch things up in Sonic (since I'm so used to it lol) so it was fun to see the more mature angle coming through. Would love to hear your thoughts too!
@@Ajakes sonic frontiers was heaps of fun to me! loved playing it, found the story fun, made sure to go out of my way to get every single sidestory interaction i could find (despite the lacklustre animation in them). controlling sonic felt really good in the open zone, though cyberspace was... iffy, but still fun enough for me to want to s rank and complete all the missions in those stages, though! basegame ending with sage and eggman broke my heart, which made the final horizon ending hit harder for me when i played it. the trials in final horizon were very difficult at times, but felt incredibly rewarding to finally complete. i even go back to beat the last trial's bossrush sometimes because it is really fun once you know what you're doing (and the music is oh so good) if i were to hate frontiers for something, it'd probably be the pinball minigame you have to play before fighting the knight... it felt super out of place, too. will definitely be watching your frontiers video when/if you make it!
Awesome video! If you're still interested in Sonic fangames, you should consider trying Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers, it's super fun and is an awesome homage to Sonic!
Got to say the first time I really saw the character was for Sonic Unleashed in a commercial. When I saw the moon turn Sonic into a werehog I thought the Xbox 360 had the capacity to tell the temperature outside since usually the weather is colder at night so that was my thought process instead of thinking of it having an internal clock or anything like that. I bought the game for Xbox and man playing the game as silky 60fps is so much fun and makes the game a lot more enjoyable overall! I really hope one day we at least get some kind of official PC port in the future
That's hilarious, I can see how your kid-brain would piece that together. Gotta stick the xbox in the freezer to access Holoska. I really do hope Unleashed gets rereleased somehow. That, Shadow and Heroes all seem to be in Sonic limbo for the moment.
2:13:02 can I be Lux?? I'm Australian so I think I get points for being kind of British, kind of cowboy PLEASE ADAM!!! IVE REWATCHED THIS VIDEO 5 TIMES THIS WEEK
Excellent video Im really happy to see a sonic series review thats from the perspective of a fan. anyway please play sonic rush its a amazing game im interested in seeing your opinion on rush blaze compared to 06 blaze
Hey i clicked on this without really thinking but HOLY SHIT YOURE GOOD this manages to be really endearjng and really fucking funny throughout the whole 3 hours!!!! Im so happy i found this!!!!!
True, I didn't even get into that. See, my brain says "what could you even do with the classic era?" but from what I heard online, they pull of some really cool stuff, in the same vibe. Also, I def want to learn more about Fang, he was one of my favs as a kid (because he had a gun lol). If you recommend it, then I'll check it out! Maybe if I ever do a next vid he can get his own character spotlight, I would love to do that.
@@Ajakes NICE! Also if ya wanna get to know Fang more I would totally recommend GSVProductions. He's a huge fan of the character and makes some amazing Fang fan content.
oh also I hate to recommend a million things but I would totally recommend watching some AoStH episodes just for the iconic character of Wes Weasely. Legit one of the best Sonic characters outside of the games. Like not even joking hes genuinely just such a treat to see. I mean how have the games not even done a salseman character yet! Well probably because they can't top the greatest salsemen of all.
@@greensoda123 Haha, no I love it! It's all getting added to the list! Will check out GSVProductions for Fang, and I've never even heard of this Wes Weasely character, but if they're a salesmen then I KNOW I'll like em lol
@@Ajakes NICE, Ya Wes is great. Honesty AoStH is definetly a weird show but its cast of stereotypical cartoon trope characters honestly wants me to see em as like background characters or side characters in the games. Similar to the boom original characters I think they would really help expand Sonics world. Oh also speaking of that stuff The BumbleKast is also a great Sonic/non-Sonic podcast. Basically this guy Ian Flynn, who has written for the later Archie Sonic Books and now currently on IDW answers a million of fans questions. Some of them normal and some of em just insane.
My personal timeline is similar to most, saw the old fan animations like nazo unleashed & sonic shorts, played the flash games like final fantasy X sonic & ultimate flash, watched sonic exe vids, cobanermani456, sega scourge when they did theories (still watched their later stuff). The first sonic game I saw in person was a warehog stage at an after school daycare thing, the person who owned the game was the cool older teen most kids had in their life & he was able to tolerate the young kid group he had around him (haven't seen him in years). First sonic game I ever played was secret rings, I couldn't get past the tutorials, it made me frustrated & I cried Later in the first year of high school my friend lended me his copy of dark souls, i didn't play it but i knew he had unleashed so i made a trade, his copy of dark souls + 5 dollars for his copy of unleashed & i still have it (never beat it though)
Lol, that's quite the timeline. You crying at Secret Rings is way too relatable. Heroes got me like that a couple times. Glad you still got Unleashed though, it's a tough completion, but I BELEIVE in you. Thanks for sharing!
What the hell was Eggman thinking piloting a mobile lottery machine that benefits the AGGRESSOR? If we get 3 Maria's in a row does Shadow go supernova???
I'm glad I found this video- In like 2000 or 2001 I was a wee little shit and had my first console... I can't even recall what it was. We were late to adopt video games in this country as-is (Romania). Dad called it a "Nintendo", and for all intents and purposes it was probably an imported Famicom bootleg with cartridges, two simple controllers and a bloody keyboard??? the latter was useless because no game used it lmao, it just had the power and reset buttons. Thing used cartridges, and I was enamored by this new digital media called V I D E O G A M E. Transformers IN SPACE (Macross?), top down cars that are bloody hard to control (Road Fighter), several other licensed bootlegs like Batman and Tom & Jerry... and then there was Sonic. This wasn't the usual fare of Sonic, no no, this was SONIC 3D BLAST 5. The only things I remember from it are Spring Yard Zone, with the super midi-fied soundtrack, and a simple spindash, but that's all I need to remember from it. The little I played made me go "oh that's Sonic!" in subsequent years, as I saw glimpses of TV schedules and cartoon ads on CN, tantalizingly close to being able to watch yet always being a few hours too early, or too late, or on some other channel like Jetix or whatever. Sonic kinda faded into obscurity for a few years... Then dad got me a DVD with a bunch of games on it. One was a first person space game where I died in like 1 minute while the ship melted from excess heat, two more games I never touched and never even remembered... and then Sonic Heroes? What's that? I go to install it and HOLY SHIT IT'S SONIC! And KNUCKLES (I remember him from parts of Sonic X)! And.. who's this yellow guy? Is he a dog or a cat or something else? (took me the better part of 4 years to realize Tails is a fox, coincidentally it's when I discovered the internet but we'll get there). 2004 was when I also got my first computer, it was RUBBISH and I had no idea about components or whatnot, but I saw glimpses of BETTER computers from other people. They had fancy new graphics effects like BLOOM and REFLECTIONS and MOTION BLUR in the Need for Speeds I was also enamored in, but I had to make do with like 20fps in Sonic Heroes when I also didn't fully understand graphics settings or controls. My grasp on English was better than the average at that age, but still very loose. The game was HARD for poor lil me. I got E ranks across the board in the first few stages and then hit a major snag in Power Plant zone. Back then I was terrified of volcanoes from catching the late night movie VOLCANO (1997) and seeing lava be unstoppable and melt someone scarred me for a few years. The rising lava in that Heroes stage terrified me into not wanting to play for a while, but I was content with other games I had available. Some time has passed, a year or two, the computer slooowly got better with a new graphics card and 512 WHOLE MEGABYTES OF MEMORY!!! I revisited Heroes, gritted my teeth.. and hey, my ranks got better and I got past Power Plant! I don't recall my opinion on most stages, though I never had much fondness for Casino Park or Bingo Highway. Rail Canyon was when I felt locked in, and pushed forth until I got stuck again at Mystic Mansion, then again at Final Fortress, and then FINALLY I beat Team Sonic! And the rest of the teams as well, pretty fast from what I remember... but the game didn't end? I saw no credits, no final cutscene, and Omochao was too cryptic for my little brain. Put the game down again for some time while I grew older. By the way, the one time I did get the chance to watch some Sonic X, I played it on mute and still closed it within a minute. I guess there was latent embarrassment or fear of judgement, but that should pass soon, right? (foreshadowing) From 2005 I took my first steps on the internet. Funny enough I insisted to my parents that I only wanted internet access for a month to go on various sites that were linked on my colourful kids' encyclopedias. It took me some time to realize, "I can search for Sonic stuff!", and I had not the faintest clue that Google existed so I just put "sonicgames.com" in the search bar, or variations thereof. That was my first exposure to various fan games. Angel Island Demo, Final Fantasy Sonic episode 5 (where you have the fight as Super Sonic), Ultimate Flash Sonic... that took me on a rabbit hole where I also discovered Newgrounds, and there were BOATLOADS of fangames and fan-animations! I ate all of it up wherever I could, but naturally had a preference for the games. This was the launch pad. I started to draw (well, trace and sketch on official refs) and I did one so well that my elementary school teacher hung it on the wall in class. I felt proud of copyright infringement :^) Still have yet to beat Heroes' final story lol, but I discovered the Flash demo to the Mega Collection, as well as managing to try out the Sonic Adventure PC demo. There was a whole world of official Sonic stuff that I was barely dipping my toes into. I had no money to buy the games, and what Sonic games could've been for sale were for consoles I never had. piracy COUGHCOUGH. I just realized PlayStation 2 was a thing around that time, and the concept of GameCube or XBOX were foreign to me, as probably were to Romanians in general. (continued)
Still, I was that kid who ran with the arms behind my back like Sonic did in various games. I wanted to absorb as much media as I could, because I LOVED IT. Some people at school, however, did not share my enthusiasm. They probably took my excitement for games and Sonic as a threat to their own misery, or I dunno, but I hit one of my lows around early-to-mid middle school. People picked on me for various reasons, chief among them my physique, my social skills and circles (lack thereof), my "geekiness" with not-very-social things like video games and Sonic. It wasn't pleasant. Unfortunately, it kinda worked to ween me off from Sonic. That's also the time I realized there was a thing called an XBOX, and I saw footage of the new Sonic game. Titled Sonic the Hedgehog, the advertising videos looked SICK, like a sleeker and better looking Heroes... then I saw it got absolutely trashed online, with scathing reviews. "How could they not like it???" How could they indeed... Fan videos and edits with Sonic 06 came into view, which brought tears into my eyes when I was spoiled on, GASP, Sonic being stabbed and killed! I knew almost nothing else from the game, but the negative fan impressions really put a damper on my interest in Sonic. That, and the absolute oversaturation with related media in such a short timespan. Nazo Unleashed was a fantastic animation and I was hype all throughout it, but naturally not many people shared even half of my joy towards it. Discovering Sonic Robo Blast 2 also wasn't enough to keep my drive in the face of so much negativity. I kinda left Sonic in the back of my mind for several years. 2012, early high school: while talking to a friend, he made mention of a new Sonic game in 2012 that I had not heard before. I didn't really keep up to date with any news, so that came as a surprise. I was reluctant to go back in, knowing I was kinda bullied (and still was through high school, but luckily not for Sonic anymore). I looked it up, it was Sonic Generations. I "acquired" the game COUGHCOUGH and played it... and thankfully I had some video game skills by that time so I didn't have *excessive* problems with it. And holy heck it was a blast to play. I thank my friend, Claude, for bringing me back into the Sonic universe, because that's when I slowly looked at any new official or fanmade content over time. For a while, however, I didn't resonate with Sonic himself all that much... it was with Tails instead! I tried to be discrete and not put the name of games or characters in the videos and screenshots I took, but there was no hiding it: this tomato likes sonic ha ha what a nerrrrrrrd. This infatuation with Tails got me several more online friends and into actual social circles of sorts, while I enjoyed creating digital art, to the point I made a self-insert "original character" that's basically a recolored Tails with few visual differences. The fanboy-lite phase has passed but I love him still- I got into several discourses, and over time, among my other interests, I slowly quieted down and got comfortable with openly liking Sonic again. I formed opinions and played through many of the games that were available on PC, and even a few that weren't: the classic 2D games, Adventure DX, Adventure 2, Heroes (the final story was cleared long since by the way, and I even completed Super Hard with a 100% save file, which I bounced back and forth between hating and enjoying), 06 on my actual X360 and then on Xenia when the unoriginal COUGHCOUGH game disk died, Generations, Forces eugh... Fan games as well, especially after discovering that SRB2 could be lan-played. My preference all throughout was for 3D games rather than the 2D ones. I just don't vibe with the 2D stuff as much, despite holding Sonic 2 in very high regards. As for non-game media, I came to the conclusion that it just doesn't hold my interest nearly enough to be notable. The only exceptions were the recent Paramount movies, which I enjoyed. I thought they were good. This little insight into my history is full of gaps because I also have gaps in my mind yayyyy :') Nowadays, several things keep my interest in the franchise. It has explored many themes, dark and light, and I dream of a return to a more balanced storytelling approach. I'm in love with games that have incredible sense of speed, such as some NFS games, and want something that takes it to the extreme. I want to see Sonic run so fast that he burns beaches into glass, cracks up concrete, shatters glass and nearly uproots trees in his wake. I wanna see exaggerated animations in surreal worlds where he can feel like a force of nature, exploiting the terrain to go crazy fast (or at least FEEL crazy fast). I want an over-the-top 3D Peelout animation where he digs his hands in the ground and goes dragster-feet until launch. I want freeform physics and level designs. I want this blue guy to not feel stuck in the past when things like racing games could do freeform loops with no automation, AND EVEN IN FIRST PERSON.. hell this one game, Distance, is practically Boost Sonic but more: your car can jump, fly, boost, stick to walls, do tricks in the air, and it needs to do all of them to survive the levels. But I'm getting ahead of myself- I loved Sonic. I still love Sonic. Maybe I'm more muted about it nowadays but I still think he's cool and fun. I'm less afraid of being labelled as such, though it might also be that the internet finally stopped caring to hate on Sonic as openly. Yay-
Sorry for the slow reply, but I wanted to give some time to read this. What a crazy story! It's fascinating to hear people's Sonic timelines in entirely different COUNTRIES so I got a huge kick out of it, especially things like getting bootlegs or maybe... sailing the high seas for games like I did. I'm sorry you got so much shit for liking Sonic in school, it never happened to me personally cause I saw it happen AROUND me and was way too cognizant to approach that stuff. It was only until I found some friends who didn't give a fuck what they enjoyed that I started coming around again. And now the Sonic hate is kinda dying down. Why? I think a lot of it has to do with SEGA's care with the franchise now, they're really appealing to older fans and their own history. But I think the main factor is: there's just a LOT of Sonic fans now lol. It's becoming pretty commonplace to enjoy/have enjoyed Sonic at this age, and when things become common, they become less cringe in the public eye. A great example is the Star Wars prequel films, which got so much shit beforehand, but are now worshipped today because there's just a LOT of people who grew up with it. It's not weird to like the prequels anymore. It's just something everyone DID, and once you hit that point, it becomes almost trite to make fun of it. I'm glad Sonic is finally at that point, AND that I returned to the franchise when things were getting better than ever. Reading other people's stories is the best part about making this video, so thank you for getting so in detail and taking me along for the ride. I really appreciate it, seriously!
@@Ajakes I thank you for the opportunity to ramble about my experiences with Sonic, and hey, you got yourself another subscriber. I'll be along for the ride, whatever you'll do next!
about the final bit in the sonic mania part around 1:52:07, SEGA did still put their hands in the game. the team had to scrap a couple of levels and the final stage is a botched version of what it could've been. But still, it could've gone way worse had SEGA decided to fiddle with it even more. I still wonder why Sonic Team isn't writing more Phantasy Star stuff, they kept putting the Sonic series in basically Diet-Coke version of Phantasy Star, even some of the enemies in '06 and Forces were basically Phantasy Star (Online2/Portable) Rejects.
I had heard there was some interference from SEGA, but I didn't know it went that far. Also speaking on Phantasy Star, wasn't the Unleashed XP reused from the games too?
@@Ajakes now that I think about it, yes. The XP prism is exactly the Meseta (credits) pickup from the 3D Phantasy Star. I wish they'd make more standalone games like pso2 without the mmo aspect (basically like portable 2 but with pso2's controls) I'd love a dungeon crawler like that. Except without the live service model that comes with the mmo ^^' Another tangent but I also will forever detest sega for acquiring compile (puyo puyo and madou monogatari original devs) and destroying the original art style in favour of whatever the style they used since 2004 is. It's just meh. I also wonder why haven't they made more Madou Monogatari games. Really, sega sleeps on multiple goldmines but just doesn't use them.
@@midorifox I hope your wish comes true WITHOUT the live service model too haha. I know SEGA had that trailer a bit ago showing like 6 titles they were remaking, it was more Western stuff (Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, etc.) but hopefully they can dig into their other franchises too, they seem to be on a bit of an upswing right now
Great video even barely a quarter in, watching through still as writing but the mention of classic not being supposed to talk was always something that put me off. In the old genesis games, if I remember correctly they said he talked a few times, that sonic OVA included his voice + stuff like the sonic cartoons gave him a voice. Just generations(I think) is what chose to shut my boy up, it's honestly kinda fitting but I find it so weird he's just mute, thrown those little bits of him away when he got modernized
Yeah, personally for me, I would like for Classic Sonic to talk, because I still hear his OVA voice in my head when he's that small and round lol. The only time I gotta really give it to them is in those Sonic Mania Adventures cartoons, which are a great example of showing the personality of those characters without even making them speak, just from their animation and facial expressions. I haven't seen them pull off something like that with the 3D classic models (even in Superstars), so when they go mute and pantomime there, it feels very mascot-y.
@Ajakes I'm really glad to see that OVA mention, coincidence maybe but I literally watched the whole thing today a few hours ago and see the same thing, all the voices except maybe not knuckles so much, fit the character perfectly in my eyes, and I wish Sega wouldn't throw stuff out so easily, continuity honestly sucks in the Sonic series, but I can't help but love that blue quilly rodent with all my heart, and again awesome vid!
Holy fuck he said Doritos Crash Course that XBOX 360 game we had and played more than the devs likely expected us to LMAO We would take breaks from Minecraft to play it- yeah yeah, gasp gasp gasp, despite being a Minecraft kid for a while I still played other things.
I was a minecraft kid too, no sweat (an og one, played the alpha when it released). The 360 era was home to so many fun little titles, loved the marketplace.
I really havn't played that many Sonic games... I played Sonic 1, 2 and CD on mobile. I've also played Lost World on 3DS, I've played Mania... and I've played Frontiers... I guess you COULD count the racing games too, but that's about it. Either way, recently replaying Frontiers with the physics sliders was REALLY fun, so I will definitely be buying Sonic X Shadow Generations at some point. I'm also planning on buying either Sonic Adventure 1 or 2 for Gamecube (I know that the Gamecube versions are flawed, but I don't have a Dreamcast... Well, I don't have a Gamecube either, but that doesn't matter since I do have a Wii, aswell as a GCN controller and memory card) at some point, but that'll have to wait. Sorry, that was a very long comment.
I'm the king of long comments, don't you sweat it. Adventure 1 and 2 are attitude-filled games, they're a lot of fun. I don't really police the versions of them that you gotta play, so I say just go for the one that's easiest, no need to make it a chore. I played Adventure 2 Battle through my Wii before the remaster came out, as it was the only way I could. Excited for you, sounds like you've experienced a lot of the 2D games so the 3D ones should be a trip!
So, I watched this to support my pal MarioKartGamerDude, and I’ve gotta say, it’s one of the most well-edited, thought-out videos I’ve ever seen! The doodles really sold it for me. I also got back into the franchise a few years ago, and it’s also really inspired me to use my creativity! The Blue Blur will always have a soft spot in my heart. By the way, if you’re wondering how that Sonic vs Tails fight went down in Archie, I actually did a dub of it a few years ago. I know, shameless plug, but here it is. th-cam.com/video/nv0eYzTSmzI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=2vAYO_h-aYdw_giJ Anyway, thanks for the video! Keep up the good work!
So so sorry for the late response, stupid TH-cam blocked your comment and didn't even tell me lol (it might've been because of links, but I got that fixed now). Thank you so much for watching! Glad you enjoyed my doodling haha. It's cool to see someone jumping back into the franchise after a stint, I'd be curious to know when you left and what got you back in! I was surprised how much it ushered me into creativity, glad it did the same to you and we got your great voices! (been looking at them now) Excited to hear your rendition of the Sonic vs Tails fight, always wondered how this would sound, even as a kid. I appreciate the send, and thanks again for watching!
@@Ajakes Thanks! I’m glad you like my voices! As far as my Sonic story goes, I was actually introduced to him since the kids church I attended had Sonic games (Mario & Sonic, Riders, and Mega Collection Plus), and I also saw a few episodes of Sonic X. I really grew attached to the characters. After I left, I kinda lost interest in Sonic, though I still held respect for him. It wasn’t until 2019 when the trailer for the first movie came out when I decided to give the series a try again. I watched the cutscenes to many of the games in TH-cam, as well as many of the TV episodes, and I gained a whole new love and respect for the characters and their stories! Eventually, I discovered Sonic fan content (starting with Balena Productions,) and I never looked back!
@@EmceeVoices Ey, thanks for taking the time to write that out! So fascinating. Yeah, I feel like a lot of people who were out of Sonic sorta peeked their heads back in with that trailer (I know I did haha). Discovering Balena later must've been nice, because then you have a whole backlog of great videos just sitting there, I've had a similar experience with other TH-camrs before, it's always exciting. Thanks again for the reply!
Haha, I won't link directly as it's part of my personal Spotify account, BUT I just added a link to the entire tracklist on the credits doc (link at top of description) under the Starfield header. (Keep in mind, it ain't a pretty playlist, back in 2016 I just went by album and threw whatever I remembered on there, so nothing is ordered in a cool way lol), but thanks for the interest!
Yeah, I think if anything they're stunted by how fast Sonic's levels are, it also doesn't help that Knuckles and Rouge are just as speedy. Once you hit the mechs you really feel the slow down. (also only 4 Shadow stages and 5 Eggman? cmon now)
one of my favourite things about modern youtube is watching some rando dissect the differences in approach for rooftop run between two games, and then proceeding to watch a whole-ass 3 hour video detailing their entire personal history with a hedgehog, and enjoying every last second of it
What a run! It takes a lot of effort to sit through 3 hours of rando-talk, so I truly appreciate it! Thanks for checking out both vids 👍
ey, no prob! always fun to hear people talk about funny hedgehogs for excessive periods of time
honestly watching this and seeing the similarities & differences in the timeline made me realise it might be fun to make my _own_ video on my personal history with sonic, because ive got a LOT i could say about where that fuckin rats taken me, especially on the internet side of things. the masses must be informed of the sega forums..........
@@Sonnakai Buddy, I know nothing of the Sega Forums and I must be INFORMED, please please do make the video! Once I got into the swing of making it, it got so fun. Do it!
Haha, I also watched the roof video and this long dissection. Id subscribe if I hadn't already done it long ago! 😅
@@Astrogeon Thank you for watching both!

Hi! I’m MarioKartGamerDude! Thank you so much for the shoutout and for liking our dubs!
Thanks for making them! You guys did incredible work.
Thank you, I'm sure a lot of people will be scared of the length of this video and only read the comments, but your explanation at the end about why you want to be called Adam the Hedgehog from now on was very introspective, very cool!
can always count on you to understand the layered complexities of my films mr. pilhede
We need a count of how many priests in the late 2000s and 2010s had to sit in a confessional as people admitted their feelings towards Sonic
I'm not ready to see that statistic
haha glad you like our voices!
You were all great! Loved your Tails
You were so good, I had to go back and listen to previous dubs to hear more! Glad you enjoyed it
Dude so much of what you said and your personal Sonic journey mirrors my own!
Like I straight up thought about leaving the vid running and jotting down another line in the comment section every time you brought up a piacular thought or something I totally related to, but that would just be me commenting on the entire vid lol
SO with that I hope you're doing well, and I hope this vid starts gaining the traction it rightfully deserves!
Hello! I was the VA for Jewel for the dub you analyzed! Glad to see you enjoyed it!
Loved the voices for the IDW characters, they helped color the new cast in for me. I know I'll be hearing your Jewel when I'm reading other stuff now
@@Ajakes Thx! You’ve really made my day man, hope you enjoy the upcoming stuff we’ll do!
Yeah, def glad to be drawing again. RIP to your old sonic vidz that's a shame, just proves how evil school really is. Thanks for watching!
I never had this much fun watching a 3 hour video, keep up the amazing work :) 👍
My goodness what a great watch!

Haha, thanks for checking out both! It's a huge passion, I loved making every second of those vids, and I hope to make more.
I wonder if it was specific to a copy of the game that got shared around a lot. Who knows! Either way, thanks for checking out the video!
I don't usually have much for additive comment's
but,
by the end of this video I was swelling up into tears.
The impact Sonic has had on my and many others lives is just so incredible.
It got me to draw, talk to others about the things I love, and even voice act! (sometimes squeezing in some creative writing here and there)
I wouldn't be so passionate about the things I love if it wasn't for those 2000 to 2010 era games getting me into the Blue Blur.
Drawing Game Land Sonic from Sonic Colors in wacky poses as a kid.
Talking about Sonic facts with people I've never met before and gaining some form of confidence from it (whatever I called it when I was younger)
And doing funny voices while playing Super Smash Bros with my siblings (I bet you could never guess who I was every time we played)
Even if my interest in the actual SEGA made games is dwindling, My love for this radical rodent will never weaver.
Cheers

Thanks for putting me in this video!

As for Eden, maybe you can rework her as like a symbol of a bygone era for eggman’s robots, the kind of models they don’t do anymore.
These deserves far more views! Awesome job man!
Thank you so much!
I'm already like 30 mins in and im still so interested. I always enjoy seeing peoples experience with sonic and why they enjoy the series so much
Thank you!
I'm here, I'm waiting, I'm ready. I need more 3 hour video essays. Also creative inspiration for metropolis here that sounds really cool tbh.
Just the permission I needed lol. And thank you! OCs lead to coming up with a bunch of other things, so it's a good creative exercise.
28:18 well to be fair classic sonic was always meant to talk (sonic cd and the old arcade games make him talk, and he says stuff in the jp manuals) but then generations silenced him for some reason
True, although that seems to be the direction they're going in now. I like a talker tho!
he talks in the idw classic comics they do sometimes too, it's a bit strange the games silence him
@@scrunkore I like how they wrote him in that little "Sonic Learns to Drive" comic, that's kinda how I imagined his tone would be
I came from the Rooftop Run video and I loved this video.
A braver man than I to talk about your love of Sonic
Ya just gotta go all in man, ALL IN
Awesome video, you've definitely got yourself a subscriber!
Thank you!
@@Ajakes You're very welcome!
I'm looking forward to whatever new stuff you make!
God I LOVE LEGO Dimensions.
Sonic was the reason I got into the game, And really fell in love with the game as a whole cause of him.
That movie is the absolute best!! I found my copy (which is lost, sadly) at Walgreens for 5 bucks.
oh god RIP to your Walgreens copy. Now that I found my VHS I'm keeping it on my desk like a trophy lol. Great movie

Basically yeah just really needed to say that this entire video means the world to me, stuff like this is my favorite kind of content in existence.
Seeing videos like this being made in my lifetime is a dream come true for me lol
To live a whole life of experiences relating to one specific subject, to hold those experiences so near and dear to my heart, and then to learn about someone else's own experiences with that specific subject in such a longform and well-made manner? It's something special, man. Genuinely can't express how much I adored this. Sorry if I sound like a broken record, but I owe you my utmost gratitude for this, Ajakes!
@@Snoc75 Not at all, it means the world to me. Thank you for the heartfelt reply. (side-note, you're writing is very expressive and affecting, if you've never written and voiced your own video, you should totally give it a shot!)

Welcome aboard, and thanks for checking out the vids!
Some points in this video I could have sworn you sounded exactly like the iconic youtuber Radical Soda.

JUST THE COMMENT I NEEDED TO RETURN (and thank you very much ☺)
I wasnt gonna comment, but after watching all the way through i couldnt help it!
2007 - SEGA All stars Tennis
My uncle, who lives with us, would buy himself an Xbox 360 and it came bundled with a game...
2008- Parents got me my own Xbox 360 because I couldn't stop bothering my uncle and he probably wanted to play splinter cell in peace
2008 - Sonic 06 (no not joking)
It was a literal birthday present and you know what, I loved this game.
2009 - I think I tried sonic rush on a cousins DS, loved the soundtrack (I wonder why) :)
2010 - I discover CW4Kids and with that, I discovered Sonic X... and Yu Gi Oh.
I started with yea I think being a Sonic fan was a package deal with life for me
No escaping it now, we're hedgehogs 4 life
Thats why Sonic Adventure 2 is the best Sonic game.
so happy i came across this video in my recommended, I myself have been returning to sonic with the upcoming generations game and movie coming up soon but I couldnt help but smile and laugh watching this whole video.

CONSUMING THE ULTIMATE LIFE FORM DAILY WILL RESULT IN DEATH
It's a long vid, so I really appreciate you attempting the whole thing.
I LOVE SONIC RAHHHHHHHHHHHH
came here from your unleashed video! i really enjoyed that one and this one.
was wondering about the lack of sonic frontiers mention, especially during the tails' portion, and i was surprised to hear you hadn't finished it.
when you do finish frontiers i'd love to hear your thoughts about it. i really like this style of video, the little doodles paired with game clips made it very entertaining.
@@Ajakes sonic frontiers was heaps of fun to me! loved playing it, found the story fun, made sure to go out of my way to get every single sidestory interaction i could find (despite the lacklustre animation in them). controlling sonic felt really good in the open zone, though cyberspace was... iffy, but still fun enough for me to want to s rank and complete all the missions in those stages, though!
basegame ending with sage and eggman broke my heart, which made the final horizon ending hit harder for me when i played it. the trials in final horizon were very difficult at times, but felt incredibly rewarding to finally complete. i even go back to beat the last trial's bossrush sometimes because it is really fun once you know what you're doing (and the music is oh so good)
if i were to hate frontiers for something, it'd probably be the pinball minigame you have to play before fighting the knight... it felt super out of place, too.
will definitely be watching your frontiers video when/if you make it!
That outrigger end credits scene went hard

Awesome video! If you're still interested in Sonic fangames, you should consider trying Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers, it's super fun and is an awesome homage to Sonic!
Never heard of that one, I'll def check it out! Appreciate the suggestion, and thanks for watching the vid!

Ha I def do, I didn't go into it cause it was something I discovered later, but in terms of weird outsider sonic stuff it's near the peak.
you gotta read the classic IDW stuff man, its really good especially the Fang the Hunter mini series.
Great video!
Thank you for checking it out!
Just wanna say I found you off the SuperMega editing video you made years ago.

Right? Maybe that's why no ones freaking out over a blue hedgehog, Rouge already broke the ice.
First sonic game I ever played was secret rings, I couldn't get past the tutorials, it made me frustrated & I cried
Later in the first year of high school my friend lended me his copy of dark souls, i didn't play it but i knew he had unleashed so i made a trade, his copy of dark souls + 5 dollars for his copy of unleashed & i still have it (never beat it though)
Lol, that's quite the timeline. You crying at Secret Rings is way too relatable. Heroes got me like that a couple times. Glad you still got Unleashed though, it's a tough completion, but I BELEIVE in you. Thanks for sharing!

I'm glad I found this video-
In like 2000 or 2001 I was a wee little shit and had my first console...
(foreshadowing)
From 2005 I took my first steps on the internet. I felt proud of copyright infringement :^)
Still have yet to beat Heroes' final story lol, but I discovered the Flash demo to the Mega Collection, as well as managing to try out the Sonic Adventure PC demo.
The fanboy-lite phase has passed but I love him still-
I got into several discourses, and over time, among my other interests, I slowly quieted down and got comfortable with openly liking Sonic again.
But I'm getting ahead of myself-
I loved Sonic.
Except without the live service model that comes with the mmo ^^'
Another tangent but I also will forever detest sega for acquiring compile (puyo puyo and madou monogatari original devs) and destroying the original art style in favour of whatever the style they used since 2004 is.

Holy fuck he said Doritos Crash Course that XBOX 360 game we had and played more than the devs likely expected us to LMAO
We would take breaks from Minecraft to play it- yeah yeah, gasp gasp gasp, despite being a Minecraft kid for a while I still played other things.

@@Ajakes Thanks! I’m glad you like my voices!
