Very cool. I have spent decades in Japanese Jujutsu, both koryu and gendai, as well as Hapkido. I think atemi is really the missing piece that allows the proper waza to occur. Good work.
Atemi-waza is very important in Aikido. When the Founder was trained in Iwama, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, he practiced atemi using makiwara, just like karate. Once the atemi is decided, it is possible to smoothly connect to subsequent throwing techniques. Sir, thank you for the wonderful video.
When I was thought Aikido I instantly understood that "Dude, this could only be applied if you have a really solid boxing game" This video clarifies everything to me now.
I can't blame you. Ppl who don't understand will bark loudest. But you aren't wrong either. Atemi is not boxing, but good at boxing can makes your aikido better.
Yeees, the first video making Atemi practical and not a bullshit philosophy. Atemi is a strike to end and distract the other's intention through an painful obstacle in their way.
One of the purposes of atemi is to give the attacker a problem of his own and thereby tie up his other hand and prevent him striking and even kicking. At Hombu Dojo we quickly learned to block the Sensei’s atemi. Doshu Kisshomaru Ueshiba would tap you lightly and chuckle. Chiba Sensei would smack you really hard, so with him, you quickly learned to counter his atemi. That was your job! Many of the Hombu instructors had backgrounds in other martial arts and some of them were veterans of WW II. Their Aikido was very realistic. In real-life situations, I have seen several brawlers get knocked out because they didn’t cover the atemi. There was no need for a pin or throw. It’s difficult to out-box a well trained boxer or out-grapple a well-trained grappler, so don’t play their game. Each of their attacks creates an opening and an opportunity. So give them a problem as the initial part of an Aikido technique.
Well done video, There is no aikido without Atemi . Also when you add serious Atemi uke response is that of an real attacker in the street. (Not just leaving your head in the way) Most aikido techniques are base on blind simultaneous Atemi strikes , by nage that uke usually doesn't see. Thank you sir.
Hello sensei !! For a long time there was nothing on your channel. They raised a very important topic. I was at your seminar in Poland, October 2018..Sihonagi, you showed. I live in eastern Europe, we have boxing schools widespread, so any brawl starts with a boxing blow ... 90% of Aikido schools in Europe and Russia (currently living in St. Petersburg) are not ready for such attacks ... it is important to show the work from real punches ... Best regards Victor :)!
Sensei, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?!! Nevermind, THANK YOU for coming back. Seagal-ha Aikido isn’t really on TH-cam that much anymore-other “people” emphasize strength, but you emphasize inside position and timing.
"aikido is useless" here the master demonstrates the opposite, it is an excellent martial art! I have practiced it for years and it has served me well on the street!
That Uke was pissed off. He was feeling the blows, and hiding his anger with laughter. I felt bad for the guy. The Tori was correct though in regards to the critical use of atemi in effective Aikido.
Can anyone point me to any TH-cam videos where people use actual atemi in Akido in a real fight? I've seen much training with willing "attackers" but of course it will all be different in a real fight. Can you point me to any videos showing these techniques actually work in real life?
If uke blocks, you proceed to kaitenage with the blocked hand while reaching to uke's head with the other hand. If uke only deflects, then you just proceed to shihonage/hijishime/hijinage or whatever.
@@zdfcz If uke blocks, there is contact, he stops your hand, you redirect his hand down and push your hand inside (between his hand and his body) to his elbow to apply kaitenage, in the same time grab uke's head with your other hand and push it down to help kaitenage work. I hope it's more clear now.

Agreed with all. Aikido is watered down Aikijutsu with more emphasis on spiritual development. Once you start adding the Atemi, throws etc. back in, it becomes Aikijutsu again plus whatever else you decide to add. I would reccomend anyone who is grappling based ( wrestling, Judo, BJJ) to spend some time with quality Aikido people such as in this video.
