    Your nailed it with your remark on how smooth Craig's "transition" to an everyman is. This movie was released during the peak of his tenure as Bond, and even his physical appearance here is remarkably Bond-like. Yet you never mistake him for Bond, not even for a second. This is clearly a completely different character, one far more vulnerable. How many other Bond actors could pull that off?

      As for RTP, I think Mendes made it too heavy handed, too melancholy, with the "evils of capitalism" message. I think the film should have been directed by Walter Hill or John Milius. Still, I love the photography by Conrad Hall. He was a god among DPs.

    Allegedly, David Fincher, Craig and Rooney Mara signed contracts that if part 2+3 of the trilogy were made, they would have to be in the films and with massive salary increases. However, the studio wanted to cut the budget [$90 million] rather than increase it. The way around this was to jump to the fourth book so they could get around the contractual obligations and change everyone! The joys of accountancy!

    • @davidjames579
      @davidjames579 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I always wondered after the success and magic bullet team of the above why they never did parts 2 and 3 (as the Swedish original films had). Sony must be nuts not to have a David Fincher directed franchise, most studios would kill for that.

    • @jamesatkinsonja

      @@davidjames579 Studio greed was the big factor. Sony thought it should have earned more money
      but they didn't help themselves by releasing it at xmas against two films-Sherlock Holmes 2 and Mission Impossible 4 that grossed more as they were PG-13 [ironically the original Swedish Dragon tattoo cast-Noomi R. in Holmes, Michael N. in MI-are in those films!]. It made 2.5 times its budget on an 18 certificate and won awards but that wasn't enough apparently
      [what little we know about the sequel efforts other than they were going to be filmed back to back is Fincher saying part 2 would be 'very different from the book' so maybe Sony was trying to make it more 'commercial' -and didn't want to commit to two films-before abandoning it].
      Fincher must have insisted Gone Girl came out in October [a more suitable time] and it ended up being far more profitable.

      @@jamesatkinsonja Yeah, it always puzzled me why Sony felt that releasing a dark violent R rated movie at Christmas time was a good idea. Typically, lighter fare tends to do more business at the Box Office in my humble experience. That said, despite having not read the novel on which the movie is based or having seen the original Swedish language version, I quite enjoyed seeing Daniel Craig in a different role. It is a pity that the other two books never got adapted into English language movies.

    The original books are in the same area as The Man with the Golden Gun, where the author died before he was able to finish editing them, and boy does it show. David Fincher's commentary goes into detail about how hard they tried to work the final comeuppance against Wennerstrom more naturally into the story, before being forced to concede it was a "five act" story. I also like to think the early scenes with Lisbeth wouldn't have felt so disconnected if Larsson had been able to do more work on it.

    Highly recommend that you check out the Noomi Rapace movies Calvin, Fincher's movie is certainly better from a cinematography standpoint, but, for me personally, the original movies feel very grounded in their Swedish origins and that flavour is hard to emulate, despite the undoubtedly bigger budget that the Fincher film had. Loved Rooney's Lisbeth, but Noomi's take on the character is my favourite and the same goes for Michael Nyqvist (who made a great villain in Mission Impossible and John Wick). The Claire Foy movie was enjoyable too and actually felt like more of a spy thriller, but it's undoubtedly the weakest movie of the five. Oh and props for admitting to enjoying Alien 3 on camera, it's a movie I've long defended in spite of its many naysayers!

    I can only echo what every other subscriber here has mentioned Calvin, great review as well. Plus, being a writer, I was pleased that this was adapted by Steven Zaillian, a remarkable screenwriter and director. He won an Oscar for Schindler's List, has adapted a string of other films from novels and articles, including American Gangster, Awakenings, Moneyball, Gangs Of New York, The Irishman, The Night Of (a series that he also directed), so I knew the film was in good hands from the announcement that he was adapting (I recommend watching them all, by the way). There's some fascinating audio interviews with Zaillian online if you search, he breaks down the process of making the film really well. The script is also available online too, if you're into reading scripts whilst watching along.

    This film just gets better with age. It's fascinating that in the opening credits we see glimpses of scenes and actors cast not seen for the planned, but ultimately unfilmed two follow up sequels. We were robbed of this what might have been Fincher trilogy never to be. This alternate universe has the completed set in their box set collection.

    Go back and read the Millennium trilogy books Calvin, which are awesome. Then watch the Swedish films (which was apparently a TV series first and then re-edited into 3 separate films, meaning the TV series is longer). Noomi Rapace as Lizbeth is indelible and Michael Nyquist (since deceased) was a believably forthright Bloomkvist. I thought it was a real missed opportunity for the US major studios to not make the other two films. The first one simply didn’t make enough $ for that to happen, even if Craig and Mara and Fincher all did a great job (though their switch up on the ending of the central mystery was somewhat truncated, I felt). Lizbeth’s disappointment at the end, I thought, was quite moving. But read the rest of the story. She has a lot of fascinating ups and downs still to come.

Although a CGI recreation in Elvis, the quality is good enough to convince and also allows for plenty of swooshing gliding shots around it.

    Nice review Calvin! It's interesting that you love this film while not being too keen on the Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy one that was released more or less around the same time, since they're very much two peas in a pod as far as I'm concerned, style-wise and in the very cold, unflashy manner the intrigue unfolds. I can't say that I'm a Fincher-fan in general, he is obviously a great filmmaker and I can completely understand why people love his films but it's not really my cup of tea. Gone Girl is easily the one that I've appreciated the most from him, because it looked less "Finchery" and more like a colgate commercial gone wrong, but that's just me :)

    This is generally regarded as one of Fincher's lesser films. Having seen the Swedish version beforehand, watching this was like a second viewing of the original as they are very alike and on the 'second' viewing I was able to navigate the convoluted plot better. The main difference is Lisbeth Salander in the Swedish version she is clearly someone who is psychologically damaged whereas Rooney Mara plays her with more vulnerability and in the so-so Girl in the Spiders Web Salander comes across as a bit anti-social.

Noomi Rapace is miles ahead of Rooni despite Mara looking how Lisbeth is described in the book to the slightest detail. Noomi just has way more range as an actor and despite how tough she acts and how unfriendly she is to people. There is a subtle vulnerable aspect to her performance that wasnt there in Mara s performance. It was still a good job. Hers was more one note for most of it. Fincher 's directing and the cinemetography is outstanding as well as the Moody, and Haunting score from Trent Reznor..The swedish one looks very ordinary and not as atmospheric, the other two lack even the little bits of scope and style the original did though. Spectre had exactly one scene, and it stood out like a sore thumb. Or a late addition to try to fix the consistently bleak tone. And Quantum had far bigger problems as we all know; the best lines were probably written on the set.
      I eagerly await the post-Nolan Bond era. It worked exactly once, in Skyfall, which was a well-made film, but one intended to be about as dark as a Bond film should ever get, given that it's based around failure and the inevitable, unstoppable, death of a beloved character. Anton Chigurh showed up and murdered Bond's mom despite all of Bond's attempts to stop him. That hit harder than losing Tracy or Vesper.

    The first book was the best though so it's not TOO bad a waste that they never made the other two. The third in particular kind of lacks tension once you realise that the bad guys are out of their element and the heroes aren't in any real danger.

    Hi, Calvin! I've read all three books: the first book is dense and satisfying, the second book is intricate and pours like lava, and the third book is almost completely forgettable. My understanding is, the publishers had only Stieg Larsson's notes to work from by the time they published his third book post-mortem, and his narrative voice dissipates perceptibly. The best part of the books for me was the feeling I knew Sweden's neighborhoods afterwards. I saw the first Swedish movie and loved Blomquist and Salander. It sounds like people have given up on the Mara-Craig-Fincher trilogy and I see there's a time gap but considering the books also jump a little bit I don't think they've run out of their time. Thanks for reviewing, I've liked all the clips I've seen on TH-cam, I have to watch it!

    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja ปีที่แล้ว

      The rest of the 'Mara' trilogy will never happen as the studio cancelled them in favour of the 'Foy' film 'Girl in the Spider's Webb' as it was much cheaper to make and Fincher moved on to other projects. As 'Webb' didn't do very well. I'll be surprised if we see another film in the series any time soon [it seems like a property more likely to come back as a streaming series].

      It was actually very well received [86% on Rotten Tomatoes, nominated for 5 Oscars]. 2 sequels were commissioned and the first at least scripted but the studio wanted to cut the budget rather than increase it which is why the resulting film ended up being a soft reboot based on the 4th book [as Fincher ect were contractually obliged to be involved if they did book 2+3].

    I’m a big fan of the books and I feel that The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo story is a much more simplistic story compared to it’s sequels where it delves into Lisbeth’s backstory, and I would have loved to see Fincher tackle those stories.
    I enjoy the Swedish versions, but I much prefer Fincher’s dark, sleek style. Sweden is almost a character in it of itself and add’s so much personality to the film. I love the title sequence as well, it is very Bondian.

    My dad's a huge fan of the books and have read them several times, and I've seen both the Swedish originals and this one several times. While I like both, and Noomi Rapace is definitely the definitive Salander, I prefer Fincher's version. Craig and the rest of the cast are splendid, but it's such an artful and atmospheric film. It's sad Fincher never got to finish adapting Larsson's original trilogy of novels. I'd love to see your take on the sequel/soft reboot The Girl in the Spider's Web. The tone is very Bondian, and it shockingly seems to borrow a lot from Spectre without doing those elements any better, unfortunately.
