It was a lot of loot in 1978, that's for sure. It was $10,106 new. The average household income in 1978 was about $15,060. My parents house (now mine) was $29k in 1968. My '79 Trans Am 10th Anniversary, was $13,260.96 brand new as a late '79/early '80 leftover--I have the original title and spoke to the original owner. He also paid the dealer a $500 finder's fee to get a 400 Pontiac equipped car over a 403 Olds. The original owner was forward thinking---there were only 1,817 out of 7,500 10th Anniversaries made with the 400 Pontiac/4 speed combination.
So, yes, it was a lot of money back then---almost like a second mortgage for some folks.

@@googleusergp Back in 1982 I bought a 69 Road Runner that had the window sticker in the glove box the price was 3003.38 basic car 4 speed manual brakes and steering had the light package and another vehicle I bought back then was a 67 Formula S notch back Barracuda the window sticker was 2760. It's always good to hear your input on these vehicles.

  • @rickloera9468

This was a special Thunderbird. The Diamond Jubilee was in commemoration of Fords 75th year as a car builder. The Diamond Jubilee Thunderbird came in two colors and was loaded from the factory. The only option may have been the moonroof. Everything else was standard equipment. The dash pad was covered in hand stitched leather, special woodgrain dash and name plaque with the owners name engraved. The quarter windows were covered in thick vinyl. Thats why you see the block off plates coveringn the rear quarter windows. Beautiful car.

Yes, these were indeed super nice models! The seats were special, the Thunderbird hood ornament also had a special clear insert that matched the color of the car and the spaces in between the turbine spokes matched as well. This is a real find, truly a special hard to locate edition that someone should save! They sure were beautiful cars, this one could be again, doesn't look all rusted out.

In 1985 I had a 76 Granada that was in okay shape, but was showing it's age, driver seat was ripped and it had a little rust below the opera window. I bought it as temporary transportation for about 9 months. I bought it and sold it for $700. Anyway, that Thunderbird now is a in a little better shape than that Granada was then. I'm not normally a fan of 70s malaise era cars, but this an exception and would have been a really nice car that would not have needed much. This was a shame for it to have ended up here.

Whoa Nelley, "Diamond" in the Rough. Tom Kirk Ford was located at 810 W Mcgregor Dr, Mc Gregor TX, 76657. It's gone now, a used car lot is there in its' place. There were 18,994 Diamond Jubilee Thunderbird models made in 1978, as that year was Ford's 75th Anniversary.
Here we go, from the top. VIN is 8 for 1978 model year, J for Los Angeles, CA assembly, 87 for Thunderbird two door hard top, H for 351 V8 with two barrel, and the rest is the production sequence.
Trim tag is 3E for Diamond Blue Metallic Exterior paint, Y2 for Diamond Blue Valino Grain Padded Vinyl Roof, 52 is Dallas, TX district code, 60H should be for T-Bird two door hard top body style, TB on the trim should be blue vinyl/velour interior, 04K should be October 4, 1977 production, three days before it was introduced to the public on October 7, 1977. Axle of 1 should be 2:50:1 non-locking, transmission of X is the FMX automatic, and AC of "A" is factory installed. There were 91,959 Thunderbirds made at the Los Angeles, CA plant in 1978, out of a total of 352,751 cars made that year. The remainder were made in Chicago, IL. The Los Angeles plant was also called the Pico Riviera plant and closed in 1980. The 1978 model year was the last year that they were made in Los Angeles.

This car was loaded to the hilt…every possible option. My parent’s had one…1978 T-Bird, Dove Gray with red striping. It was my Mom’s car. Her bird had the moonroof and factory CB, just like this one. Did you notice the antenna on this bird…the black part was for the factory CB. You can see in the video, under the dash near the floor under the radio, there was the jack to plug in the handheld CB controller, just like my Mom’s T-bird. My Mom’s only complaint about her 78 T-bird was it was gutless. My Mom was the type that loved to haul ass, and the first month she had her new T-bird, she complained how lacking it was with get up and go. But it sure was a pretty car.

1978 Thunderbird Diamond Jubilee edition. Tp commemorate Fords 75th Anniversary. (There was also a Continental Mark V DJE which was top of the line.) The diamond blue in and out was the most popular color. The other monochromatic color choice was Ember metallic which was coppery in color. You could also get white with diamond blue trim and white or pastel beige with ember color trim. The base Thunderbird was about 5400 bucks and the base price of these DJE's was about 10,200 as they were heavily optioned and had exclusive trim. The back side windows were covered with the plastic panel and then the roof vinyl cover over that. This allowed for a more "private" interior effect and was a throwback to the 1966, 1969 and 1971 years that had a "blind" 1/4 window model as an option. The car you show here was very heavily optioned as it has several of the few options you could add to a DJE. The most obvious is the moonroof. Also was the Automatic Temperature climate control. (Manual temperature control A/C was standard on the DJE). Also optional was the cruise control and the radio. The standard DJE radio was a Am/FM Signal Seeking unit (Town and Country) with 4 speakers included. A mid level option was a AM/FM Stereo unit with 8 Track tape init built in. The one here has the AM/FM 8 Track with the Quadrasonic stereo effect. I am not sure what it had to make it better, but the playback was much more lifelike. The entire hood ornament is gone but these had a Thunderbird emblem and the body of the Thunderbird was translucent plastic color coordinated to the color of the car's paint or interior trim selection. The mid tier Town Landaus also had this hood ornament. They are hard to find these days. Any way, they built around 11000 DJE's for 1978 out of a total Thunderbird production of a little over 352,000 in total. (Nearly 4% of all cars sold in the US in 1978 were Thunderbirds.) 1978 was the highest number of Thunderbirds ever built in a model year. The "Tachometer Instrumentation" package was a DJE standard feature and optional on all other Thunderbirds. The wood applique was another DJE exclusive. In 1979 they changed the clors available to light blue or maroon and renamed the "Heritage" editions and sold lots then, too. Yes, my first car was a 78 Thunderbird handed down to me from my Mom and Dad. I stupidly traded it in when I got my first real job and have regretted it every since. I finally found another one which is in the garage now. Thanks for sharing and I enjoy your vids. If that car was within 100 miles of me I would be there with my pickup and strip everything off that one.

Another good video those were just plush nothing special about them but they were very popular I think the gas crunch off the late 1970 cause them too down size and you couldn’t get the 460 v8 anymore . I Remember going too dealer looking at them when they were new ford should stayed with the original concept off the thunderbird off the 1950 and 1960 they tried with that 2 seater off the 2000 but the retro styling was off not like the retro styling they did with the mustang I’m glad they just finally said enough is enough and retired that legend 👍

Am already laughing, its always hot out there!!!!🌵🏜🌵Know death valley is hot,123°🌡I use to work for this towing ,auction, sales company, I use to gather all there belongings, cause the cars all had been linked on deadly accidents. Basically, the owners of these cars always died, there relatives would come for there belongings. And yes it would get fricking hot out there.🏜I had by personal Cart filled with a vacuum, gas Honda generator and clean the cars, set to clean them out for the auction.

123°🌡🔥 I shouldn't be complaining then. I've never felt that kinda heat. I like hitting the public car auction. 4 of my cars(89 caprice, 87 bmw 635csi, 79 Lincoln Versailles, and 70 Pontiac Executive all came from the auction. They dont do much cleaning there though, especially for the non runners

They was ugly back then. They are still ugly. Not many cars from that era had nice styles.
