I was expecting an exchange of arrow volleys a few seconds prior to the sword-versus-spear fight at the merge; in Samurai times, senior infantry used the bow as their stand-off weapon. (Junior infantry used the spear as their primary weapon until the 19th Century, when the new Imperial Army equipped them with rifle and bayonet.)
