  • On a hill overlooking the plain and about 40 km from Bhopal, the site of Sanchi comprises a group of Buddhist monuments (monolithic pillars, palaces, temples and monasteries) all in different states of conservation most of which date back to the 2nd and 1st centuries B.C. It is the oldest Buddhist sanctuary in existence and was a major Buddhist centre in India until the 12th century A.D.

It's nonsense to say there are no representations of the Buddha because people believed he was supernatural. The Buddha claimed to be enlightened, this much is true, but he never claimed to be anything other than a human being and he said that all beings were capable of attaining enlightenment (though not necessarily in one lifetime). The Buddha did not want to be venerated. He said that we show respect towards him by walking on the path of Dhamma. Hence, the depiction of his footprints and hence why the early Buddhists did not build any statues of him. (Those only appeared after the Greeks came to India.) It's unfortunate that an organisation that is as well-known and respected as UNESCO should be so unaware of these basic facts about Buddhism.
The wheel is the wheel of dhamma. There are many translations of the word 'dhamma', one of which is 'law'. It is right to say that it represents the Buddha's teachings, but it does not represent the Buddha. This again is wrong.
