Get yerself some gear girl. Yer gonna crash and some cheap gloves and a few pads can really help. I use leather gloves from Harbor Freight. Yer gear doesn't have to cost a lot if you think outside the box. ;)
BTW what year is yer TW? Mine is a 1999. Runs great still. Also I'm an OLD dude, like way older than yer Dad. :)
