Used step-ons all last season and loved them so much I can't see myself going back to traditional bindings.
I bought the 2.0 bindings this season and they're a huge upgrade. No clicking, but also significantly easier to get in and out of.
I consider myself medium level park/all mountain rider. I've used step on for the past season, while the convenience factor was what drew me to it, what I like the most about it after using a season is actually the response and consistency, and overall how it feels on snow.
Just like how people buy an EV to save on fuel but stay for its instant torque.
I love the step-ons. More consistent, faster to put on and fun to ride and it made my season really enjoyable (over here in NZ we had the best and longest winter since last year - 2 extra months of snowboarding and big dumps of snow) . Step-ons are staying for sure - Unlike EVils which are overpriced junk that's slow to drive, slow to charge and toxic waste when it's made, when it breaks and when you have to toss it into garbage where it belongs.
I am looking to purchase some for my son. He will carve and do a little park some. Im wondering which stiffness in both boot and binding would be best for him. Hes only worn rentals in the past so im sure all the step ons will be much stiffer than whats hes used to.

Coincidence, just ordered my 4th EV and finishing up first season on Step ons. Function great but my toe clip snapped off. They must be working on that now. Way to brittle plastic for that flex/retention purpose.

(Disclaimer: this is my opinion and I'm just a "casual") This feels like its perfect product for someone who is snowboarding for a while or someone who has troubles bending (and it's not just about belly - if you have a sore/stiff back or ribs this will put you back in a game). After 30 years of doing buckles it gets really old even on autopilot and you start thinking towards the top of the chair lift "it's nice just to step on and go". If you are coaching people this is probably the best investment - you'll have more time to focus on the person rather than your bindings. last season I was helping my 3 kids and wife to transition from skis to snowboad and this made it so much easier. It feels bit different when riding to start with but after day I got used to it and now I don't even think about it. I just step on and go. Spins and buttering are feeling tiny bit different but I feel like I have more control and buttering is easier. I haven't tried jumps but I have "tried" some hard crashes and the board doesn't go anywhere.
LOVE the step ons! Had them for two seasons and the convenience is just worth every penny. Gone are the days where the skiiers mock us snowboarders for taking too long to get on the run
Used Step Ons for 2 seasons now, the edge to edge responsiveness is addicting and makes carving feel natural. Once you get used to them you can ride off a lift and step on while going off seamlessly, skipping the classic snowboarder binding sit. But for me the insane edge to edge feel means regular binding are out of the question for me now, when it comes to riding park I think traditional bindings have Step On beat, but for piste and even perhaps pow Step On is the way to go. Also a little wax/grease gets rid of the clicking.
The classic snowboarder sit should realistically be gone by the 2nd season anyway. Honestly if you just spend a whole day working on not sitting, you can get it done.
@@kushklimatik for which you need quality bindings. I've got low quality cheap bindings, and am looking to upgrade, because they're uncomfortable, and all over the place, and too rubbery, so hard to reach. Also, I've already lost my toe strap twice, once in the middle of riding, and I can tell you, the scorpion if you're on a CAT is not nice. So, figuring out the right bindings is key!
@@DorotaGabal ehh I’ve used all sorts of low quality to high quality bindings and while it certainly was more annoying with low quality bindings (e.x: tongue taking longer to fit into the buckle due to old crappy buckle), it was still doable. Once you get comfortable and know how to squat-lean/standing to strap on then penguin walking out, you should be fine. Every once in a while I’ll sit and strap but that’s generally pretty rare. Even when it’s icy and hard to get a good notch in the ice for squat-lean/stand strapping, it’s still less annoying and more energy efficient than sitting to strap up
Where do you put the wax/grease?
I’m mostly sure they fixed the clicking in the ‘23 model year

@@bukchoiii I do think that the Mine77 EST version of the binding does have better board feel and dampening than a standard step on since it uses the Burton channel system. I have a set of both step on bindings. Honestly I have a hard time remembering what traditional bindings feel like now bro
used step ons all last season, the clicking never bothered me. But yeah the consistent feel and absolute responsiveness is amazing. I have taken it down some pretty rough terrain and had some tomahawks, only time I ever came out was my foot out of the boot lol. boot was still firmly attached to the board lol.

@@michaelsutherland9069 so the stepson bindings are super responsive I wouldn’t say stiff. I have the phantom boots which are pretty stiff. From what I understand the ruler boots are a bit less stiff so you may wanna go with those. The responsiveness is a bit getting use to but it’s awesome once you do as you get way less worn out not having to flex as hard

Another type of person you could recommend them for is one whose feet have a high arch/instep and might struggle with pressure and blood circulation issues while using traditional bindings. That's the main reason I've been drawn to the Step Ons (next step will be to potentially switch to skis) and all the other features are just butter. The potential to be riding this season with no (or at least greatly reduced) pain is going to be game (life?) changing.

Step on all the way. The responsiveness is great every input is translated into edge movement. Love it.
definitely not for beginners, but if you're intermediate or pretty proficient at riding they're awesome.
they take a little getting used to, but once you're used to them they're freakin' awesome......
when you're not fiddling around with straps, it really is nice.
and the bindings are totally legit. well made, sturdy, quality materials, look good and perform great!
the photon boots do take a bit of break in, but after about three days of riding they're fine--
orrr, just put em on and wear em around for several hours--that helps too.

I'm a beginner and it's very easy to use to get in and out, if anything other than the convenience these are incredible. I'd figure as a beginner have more error for play is better but I'm a quick learner 2nd time snowboarding ever and I went step on route and I'm already starting to link turns and almost do proper edge carving

I love my step ons. I'm old and beat up. My mountain isn't very tall. Not having to strap in at the top is awesome!
I just picked up the bindings, and I'm now waiting for the 22/23 step-on shoes to be available to try on and purchase at the local store. My younger kids, ages 7 and 9, picked up skiing two years ago, and they love it so much that they want to go every weekend. They don't wait for their old dad to strap in at the top after exiting the lift. I hope I can catch up with them faster after switching to the step on.

My dude Tommie! Great video ❤️ When these first came out I was hating on these, but now I love my Step Ons. Nice and responsive and they create another level of fun for me. The more you ride them, the better they get.

@@Chaugar you’re right! I hated on them for the same reason a lot of people continue to hate on them. I never tried them and assumed they were going to be for lazy people and beginners. Other than telling my brother I thought they were dumb, I didn’t go around hating on them on social media or anything like that. When I saw the bindings in real life though, they looked so cool and I knew I had to try them. Man was I wrong. Such a great binding! Burton killed it!

@@michaelsutherland9069 i like the swath and the ruler for overall riding. I like to carve and do park laps. For me, the photon and Ion are a little too stiff. The other boot that would work for him is the Kendo.

Legit that you are going to stick with straps but can still give such a good review.
I'm using these and love them. Performance and responsiveness is great. I don't think you lose anything there.
A fact of life is that our joints degrade over time, and eventually not needing to bendi down so much is a big plus. Step Ons are helping to keep me on the mountain longer and more often.
Maybe I should rent or borrow a set of strap boots and bindings and do a comparison from the other angle. Modern bindings look a lot more usable, well designed and engineered than when I last used them.

@@tommiebennett if you have any sort of impingement, you may wanna check out the FAI Fix programme. Saved me from getting surgery on both hips couple years ago.
I have the 2st gen and being overweight was a godsend. The bending was absolutely horrid to strap on, but not with step ons.
Ive lost weight and I refuse to switch back. The boots are so damned tight if you have wide feet, but switching liners is your answer.
What liners did you put on em?
I got them last year, I can't imagine going back to regular bindings
I Ski and Snowboard. Haven't went skiing in a long time, went snowboarding the other day and the skiers made me jealous not having to strap in or struggle getting back to the lift. This could prevent me front going back to skiing.
As an instructor, I’ve wondered if it would be useful for the constant in and out when I’m helping my complete beginner students. But regular bindings have just never felt like a pain, so it’s hard to justify the price tag of step-ons. Would love to try them for a week whilst teaching though
Personally I've been looking at them for a couple of seasons. Since I joined my local ski patrol I think they might prove useful. It's an added comfort.
Best binding I love it especially for hiking a rail it’s perfect Bc it takes 2 seconds to pop back in and for teaching students the step ons would be perfect
They are not really that much more.
Keep an eye out for sales at the end of the season, especially if there is a newer version coming out the next year, this way I got a 45% on my binding and 40% on my boots discount last year.
It’s better if your gear looks like their gear. If you are teaching beginners, you probably just ride one footed anyway. And then for upper level, no need to get in/out of bindings. Teach one footed, it’s so much easier

I’ve honestly never owned a pair of regular boots and bindings, my first set up was those old school step ins with the bar under the center of your foot, clips into the binding. Sketchy Af but they were given to me so.. then like 3-4 years ago I got a pair of K2 clickers given to me, a little bit bigger than I’d like so I bought the burton step ons at the beginning of last season. The K2’s bind is definitely the one that seems safest but also least convenient, Burton’s are a nice mix of safe, convenient and comfortable... I’m sure they’re all just as safe, it’s more of a mental thing probably, just how safe they look
Edit: so actually I lied, my step ons were a few weeks out when I ordered them last season so I bought a cheap pair of regular bindings and boots and I broke them in one run by crashing the hardest I ever have into a tree after falling off a ledge

Every review cannot find a problem with these bindings but ends up recommending them to beginners or people that have reduced mobility, saying they will not switch to them because of "feelings", but I don't understand what these feelings are.
I got them for the convenience, love them for the performance.
When you are use to the ritual of lacing up and sitting at the top getting your head right before a run and its less about rapid repetition of runs because you aren’t a beginner it feels cheesy to some. I get it

@@ammakko Maybe ritual is the wrong word but basically doing something the same way for 10 to 20 years isnt going to easily change
I switched to them mainly because I live in Midwest and the resorts in Wisconsin are tiny, runs are like 1-2 minutes at most. Being able to step on really saves the time!

Nice review Tommie! These are not for me but the point someone made about being able to step in as you're getting off the chair makes them a bit more attractive. What I am excited about is to see the next generation of kids who'll grow up riding these things develop a whole new world of freestyle "bind-and-unbind-and-bind again" tricks. Kickflips mid run? Maybe ...
I've always been a Flow "fanboy", but recently my boot of 10 years got destroyed the other day. Started researching the step ons...I've got a pair of the photons in shipping now and the x bindings shipping hopefully soon in time for my next trip to the "mountain"(one of these days I'll make it to a real mountain).

Just got the DC step on boots, they definitely seem a little softer than the Burton dual boa boots. Hopefully responsive but supposedly not quite as stiff.

Only thing I find a bit off about the step ons is when you flex into toeside edge, because there is a clip at the back of the boot it naturally wants to lift your heel up. Which can cause issues if you do want that looser park feel you normally can get with looser ankle straps
If your heel is lifting consider adding the J-bars to boots. That made a huge difference for me in my Ion / StepOn. With the straps I was just crushing my foot down with the ankle strap instead of just having the boot actually hold the heal down.
Pro tip if the J-bars are too thick you can sand them to down to perfect the fit.
@@NebraskaDownHiller Sorry, should've stated. I didn't mean heel lift inside the boot. I meant heel lift when you flex into the toeside edge, the highback instantly responds due to the buckle connection thats right there. Which can cause issues if you're wanting to progress into more freestyle. On rails (boardslide) you have to be flat footed and collapse your ankle so that the board stays flat. With the steps on as soon as you collapse your ankle your toeside edge is initiated in the slightest if that makes sense.
Started seriously boarding at 45. I’ve had StepOn’s for three seasons now. I rock either Nagano (Hakuba & Happo One) Yuzawa, & Hokkaido on a bi weekly basis. These things have yet to fail once. I was catching edges hard at first but now the response is second nature. I can’t see myself ever going back.

Do you think this step ons would be good for park as well? Cause I’m curious why the pros like Mark Mcmorris and other Burton pro rides are no using them? And could you make a video on your bindings angles please, I know is a personal preference but since you are a coach could you explain the pros and cons of using to much angle on them or no that much angle, thank bro 👍🏻

I had similar thoughts to your review after the first couple days. Once I got about 5-6 days on mountain with my stepon setup I’m never going back. They really improve the more you ride them / once the boot is broke in. Truly game changing.
Overall I think the step ons are legit, but I’m never gonna even consider buying a pair until I see a Burton team rider compete in step ons. If their own athletes won’t back their product and compete in them, why should I buy them?
you will see it at competitor level once the juniors that are starting now on these will grow up and start competing. It feels slightly different, the muscle memory for riding is slightly different and if the riders are already competing they are already used to something, they worked on the muscle memory and doing change to their style to radically new thing just for the sake of convenience and slightly better response and control? that's a lot to ask, it's a hard mental game and very few can do it. I think most will go with what they used to. New riders? for those it doesn't matter and I would say for new riders this is actually easier as you have consistency at least in the binding setups and that translates in faster learning because the board reacts the same way all the time. (just my 2c)

I think you should try them for a couple of days, and then decide for yourself. Frankly, I think they are so clearly superior that going against them is starting to become kind of blasè.
Reminds me a bit about when the first carving skis went out, old timers refused for a long time to accept defeat.
I used to compete. Team riders have very different requirements. Your comment makes sense if you ride really really hard and have specific needs around a particular discipline (park, pipe, bx, etc). The overwhelming majority of people are resort riders who snowboard for recreation. For team riders, snowboarding is their job and convenience is not a big factor.
@@Nicool333 Freaking well said that’s exactly how I feel I’ve been riding for 35 years so yeah I’m 53 and I can carve and get down just fine but I do not need anything that’s hard-core at this stage in the game and I love having some nice response and ease I had no idea how much effort I was exerting on my old bindings which were crap Lamar bindings anyways but still I could rip and enjoy them but man was I working my ass off these bindings are so touchy I love it it feels kind of like that old-school hard boot alpine feel when people would actually wear ski boots on their snowboards without having to go through that kind of weirdness
Love the step ons! I switched over from burton cartels, vitas and missions. They introduced the genesis binding to the line line (which is softer than the standard step on) this year and I'm pairing it with a soft boot(the ruler) for my park setup. I have the standard step on and the photon(the boot you rode) for my pow set up and then have the stiff step on x and dc judge for my FR/all mountain setup. Takes getting use to but I love the response.
Hey RJ, don’t normally leave a YT comment but your message was very insightful. I currently ride genesis + ruler after moving up from cartels. Almost exclusively carving, no park. Would love some more info on your switch. I’ve been looking to get firmer boots as the ruler is a bit soft with some heel lift, feels like I should consider step on. How does it compare to std step on with photons? Comfort level (no hammock back)? Heel lift? And how do they all compare to step on x and dc judge? My goal is to get no play/movement in the boot. Usually find myself cranking bindings and playing with the tongue of the boot to lock the heel down.

@@LordKryn if you like zero lift in the heel, check out Salomon LoFi boots. Not a step on boots but It is a moderately stiff boot with their straight jacket system. It's a strap that covers ankle exclusively allowing you to boa rachet it down as tight as you want for zero heel lift. Really cool system.
@@LordKryn to be honest I haven't had a chance to try the genesis yet or the judge. They both just dropped on the 18th and I wanted to wait for a bit more of the mountain to open. I will say the photon has been the work horse of the step on line and the snugger strap/faux ankle strap helps keep your heel from lifting. The best rule with boots step on or otherwise is the best boot is the one that fits your foot. So I recommend getting fitted I wear a 9 in burton but a 8.5 in dc if you have lift in your boots a good boot fitter can help with that. They can add J bars or make others mods. Another option if you don't want to jump to step ons is check out k2 boots they're comfy and they have a special component called their conda system which specifically holds your heel down.

I’m pretty interested in step on as the toe side response is where heel lift sucks so with everyone raving about toe side with step on it could be the answer. Will give the other boots a look. A custom footbed has helped but didn’t think to mod the boot… I came from Nitro boots with more dramatic heel pinching that I’ve missed.
Given that you’ve purchased a second set of step ons it seems like you’re converted. Std step on + photon probably the right place to start (with maybe a j bar mod)…

Straps for life.
I honestly think in 5-10 years these will be the normal bindings and strap-ons will be like the classic "Traditional" way of strapping your board. I think I'll stay with straps but you'll never know how good the Step-Ons will be developed :) Maybe one day they'll overtake the classic Strap-Ons
Thanks for this. I can see you were in the Photons (which I just bought) but are the bindings the regular version, the X, or the Genesis? The X are supposed to be stiffest, Genesis in the middle. They also have a newer boot that is lace instead of Boa.
Having ridden these for 3 seasons in all conditions ( even deep pow) I can say that the biggest thing for new users is proper boot selection. Because of the way you lock into the baseplate there is very little play in any direction ( especially side to side). So, you don't need to buy the stiffer boots to get response. If you go too stiff on the boots they will be twitchy and uncomfortable. My suggestion would be think of how stiff your normal boots are and try one step down.
Great info. I was riding Ions and Genesis in regular boot/bindings. Have Photon in Step Ons. I figure once they are broken in and depending on how tight I lace up hopefully somewhat similar?
@@wheaty64 Yeah, that should be about right. You will find them to be quite a bit more responsive though. A good trick that I found while breaking in the ion SO is the run the snugger strap fairly loose during the break in and the slowly add tension to it as the boot breaks in( and down) to keep the flex consistent longer. I've got 135 days on my ions...and they are just hitting the point where I may need to replace them. Hope this helps.
@@jonbrown9490 That makes good sense. With my regular Ions I find I lace them fairly loosely and gradually lace tighter as they break in a little. I'm looking forward to the increased response personally. Like the idea of not having to guess how tight to ratchet down straps every run too.

Small hill bindings. If your resort has like 1-3 minutes rides there great.
I picked up a set of step ons last year at the end of the season and only got about 5 days on em. I like them but I'm not totally sold yet. In fact I'm already considering picking up a pair of traditional boots and using my old af Cartels on my other board and alternating between the two my first 6-10 days of riding to really see which I like better.

i love it. however after 4th day on the hill, one of the clips on the toe side just snapped break. I guess cold tempetures make plastic too frigid. im going through the second pair of step on bindings and it was mid december. Also the boots tearing on the thong where the boot strap, thong and the laces line meet.
so they work well as long as they last, but they aint last long unfortunetley

i have been riding on step on for about 2 seasons and absolutely love them. i spend most of my time exploring the mountain and not the park so couldn't give an opinion there, but the ability to quickly get going and know that the boots are tightly locked in place and that the input from my boots through the bindings will be the same every time to the output on my board is awesome.
Tommie might disagree but for me these are actually superior to strapped bindings for carving as the cleats at the toes and heal mean that the board responds to your movement immediately with zero play.
they are a bit pricey but consider looking at the women's versions (don't know why but the equivalent boot and bindings are cheaper than the men's). i think i saved about $200 by getting a size 9.5 women's ritual boot rather than a size 8.5 men's swath (which i believe is the men's equivalent men;'s boot). my understanding is that the inner boot fit is similar but not identical between the men's and women's so be sure to actually try the boots. also a note that i believe Tommie is wearing the photon boots in this video which are the most expensive of the step on boot available. the others do not have a strap across the heal that simulates the feel of a traditional strap which is there more for personal feel than anything else as I believe all even the cheaper ritual boots have 2 boa systems for upper and lower boot .
Ion is the most stiff boot and also has ”heal strap”. I am about 100kg and love them!

I've demo'd step ons and was not impressed by any means. Maybe if I could get a better boot with them they could be better. They take some time getting used to.

Would the Burton Ruler Step On boots be a better option if you want less stiffness and a more loose feeling when riding? Have been thinking to change to the step on system for a while. Is it worth going for the new 2.0? Could hopefully get some used to a good price otherwise.

The inner front cleat of my non-primary foot has peeled off and it has partially peeled off my soles on my 2019/20 stepons. I have only used it for approx 6 months (mar-apr20, dec20-apr21, dec21-jan22), riding 2/3 days per week 2/3 hours each ride. Intermediate rider mostly stays on piste. How long do your step ons last before the cleats peeled off.

I just purchased the new 23 burton custom Flying V. It was a package deal on the house( unfortunately new year boards don’t get sign up discount) BUT the panda design got me. First set up I’ve bought.. did it for the panda… buuut the binding ain’t step on and honestly I want to sell my brand new binding for burtons step ons
I love the straps, they give me the time to mentally prepare myself for a trick or stall for time, straps give me the unequivocal feeling of safety, regardless of how qualitatively sound the step-on is, not to mention the complete commitment to Burton, which can be a bummer if you're keen on mixing and matching different brands.
You can get the Step On bindings as your only Burton component; they come with the ReFlex discs which fit non-Burton boards, and DC has licensed the tech for their boots.
@@fudhater8592 DC boots have one of the largest footprints of any boot available and they are all wide fit. I think it's interesting that they say they go together when you can barely fit Burton's boots (midwide) in their own bindings. I haven't seen anyone with them to see how they really fit together.

Solid objective review! I rode mine for 1/2 of a season last year before switching back to straps. Ultimately they're great for convenience and responsive carving, but they suck ass to get in and out of in PNW chunky powder. Would definitely warn anybody riding powder of that issue
Watch Midwest shredder video on pow. No issues. Def a technique to it, but possible.
I rode them in NM and CO powder. We have a more dry powder. I found them easier to get in and out of in deep powder. Just my 2 cents.
Thoughts on the Clew bindings?
