This is great, I need to know how the safety locking device works

If you look at www.pidia.se/ingmarsklyv_eng.html there are two pictures where you can see the locking device in detail.

Curtis Safe but more noisy. Now I'm pondering over a way to lower the clatter.

+Ingmar Andersson maybe you can use a cable instead of a steel rod, just like the handbrake from a bike. Mount a brake disc from an old bike or quad/four wheeler at the base on the pivoting point, attach the brake caliper to a fixed point and run the cable to the handle...et voila!!!....a noise free and repairable log splitter braking system. If the brake disc doesn't work you can also use a steel flat bar instead of a brake disc and make it work the same as a brake disk would. Let me know if you think that it is a good idea :-)

Thank you! Yes it's a good idea and I have thought about something like that. The problem is that the brake may not work when axe goes upwards, only it will brake when axe is going downwards. Also the axe is very heavy and I have to trust the braking one hundred per cent. Today the braking (strictly speaking the stopping) is very robust and safe, but clattering...

Ingmar Andersson Yes I understand you but I am sure that you can make it solid enough to handle the torque, don't use moped parts but real bike parts. And the brake can work in both directions or just one direction, upwards or downwards, that is not a problem. It can even made to work at a certain hight if you use a third cable. But what you basically need to make it work on release of the handle is a two step cable mechanism with one extra spring lever in the middle of the two cables, that will reverse the brake mechanism. So if I take it in steps starting from the disc brake caliper you would need a cable that goes from the disc brake caliper to a spring lever in the middle that keeps the brake under permanent tension. Attached to the same spring lever but in the opposite direction you take another cable and that cable goes to the handle. So when you squeeze or turn or pull the handle a cable controls the spring lever in the middle but in the opposite direction of the cable that keeps the brake caliper under tension. So when you squeeze or turn or pull the handle you release the brake, and when you let the handle go you activate the brake. In short, use a two step cable with an extra spring lever in the middle in order to make the brake a release brake instead of a pressure or push brake. In order to make the brake work at a certain hight you attach an extra cable from the same lever in the middle to a fixed point, that will stop everything at all times, you can even make that permanently adjustable to various sizes of wood. To make it extra strong you can use two disc brakes at both sides of the pivoting point. It sounds way more complicated then it is :-) Instead of a handle that you need to squeeze you might want to use an old gas throttle from a bike, that way your fingers will never get squeezed by the handle and I think that it is a more natural move to make for your body.

+insAneTunA Thank you for telling me, I can understand it all. I intended to make the stopping with a quite big arc of a circle and two brake shoes, one at each side of the arc and opposite to each other. That would be something like a disc brake but with just a bit of the circle arc. The brake shoes could be set up so they had pressure to the arc just when they moved in one direction and were released in the other direction and also without springs. The pressure and the release come with the motion in the two directions. When the axe turns on the top and is to start going downwards the velocity is zero and so is the moment. Then it is very easy to stop with some braking. That's exactly what my present "brake" does. I made it as a makeshift solution but it functions so good and safe and it is so robust against weather, ice and snow so perhaps it will be permanent. You know, the splitter is standing outdoor the whole year round. That's part of the whole idea with every bit of the splitter being used and rusty and coming from the junk yard and standing out in snow and rain all the time and still is capable of wonderful functioning...

I am surprised they didn't try to patent it, and order Mr Andersson to remove his vidoes & other content.
They believe they got away with stealing his invention. But there is always a price to pay for greed.
In the long run, Mr Andersson's invention has helped a lot of people heat their homes with much less wear & tear to the body.
      Thank you.

Классная идея - никаких моторов, но с места не сдвинешь.
Вот, тоже, идея хорошая, этот можно перекатывать с места на место, но по сложнее делать:
