And yet another startlingly good lesson. I think the Zen guys would refer to your lessons as examples of 'satori' - which I believe can be thought of as bringing us back sharply to reality. Many thanks
Brilliant lesson.... Delightful and hugely informative... Just what I needed on my bop quest.. Respect and thanks. Ps I have a Zoller pickup as well on my Epiphone H Roberts archtop... Very cool sounds to be sure. Gday from Auckland
Pretty cool. Actually, Groovin' High also presents a great opportunity for learning one of the little details of bebop which is well worth it, and that's ornamentation. For example, on that m7 arpeggio in the last few bars of the tune that you started with, after you've played the first 5 notes (in chord tones, natural7 - root - third - fifth - seventh, rather than just playing fifth and third, ornament the fifth by playing a triplet (fifth - seventh - fifth). There are many such ornaments within that tune, and horn players put them in all the time. If you acquire this habit as a guitarist, and it's not too hard, then you're one big step closer to bebop.
Very true. I was listening to Confirmation the other day, and I still haven't quite managed to get all the ornamentation on that. Groovin' High is due for an overhaul - there's lots of details in that tune for sure, and the original arrangement is very cool.
I love your quintessentially English way of seeming to be rather embarrassed about how simple (not) all this stuff is, and how the imagined audience are probably saying 'well of course....'
Hey Christian, do you dwell on landing right (ie chord tones on downbeats) with this stuff at all? It's easier when you're thinking of the V alone but more difficult when approaching from a sub-viewpoint. Do you just let your ear guide you? Your lines sound so smooth! This video is a total goldmine, really solidifies some things I casually observe from listening and transcribing
Hey cheers Mac! I think the answer might be - 'what is a chord tone'? If I am playing on V I might be playing chord tones of a substitute chord rather than just V7. IIRC the examples in the vid were kind of arpeggios themselves? So they are sub chord tones, maybe not G7, say, but instead Db7 or something. In this case, it's not a consideration. The chord tones thing really gets involved in bebop language when we want to play scalar lines. So, most people know about the dominant bebop scale, but really you can apply those rules (add a note between 1 and 7) to outline any chord you like within the dominant or mel min scale... The simplest application of this is to go between G7 and Db7 (and poss Bb7 and E7 dominant scales), and that gets you a long way... But it's not really what this vid is about. Hope that's not too confusing!
Cool! You play some REAL colorful runs! Think I'm gonna steal some of your material. Also your lesson shows that bebop is based on arpeggios plus chromatics rather than scalemodes.
Hi there, I watch loads of youtube vids on this material but I really like your approach. This vid really touches on where I am at and where I would like to take my playing. Are you based in London by any chance and teach or would be interested in hooking up sometime?
that Night & Day example at 5:18 (just spiralling around...indeed) sounds great and I'm going to have fun exploring that. You're a generous man!

Bepop is a jewel in the crown of music!
Great lesson thank you
Very nice presentation. A really good way to think of the altered scale that I have never considered,. Thanks!

Hi. The Zoller didn't work for me. I found I preferred the sound of a cheap (artec?) mini humbucker surprisingly.
I noticed you changed your channel's name! I too started looking at Gypsy Jazz. Real nice music and history!
This is actually a different channel....
Really nice stuff. Goes by a bit fast for me but that is why there is rewind. Thanks!

Thank you, you present complex music theory / technique with unique ease.
Thank you very much for the video, man! Really good explanations and great content! 👍👍👍

Steal away!
very cool... thanks.
what are some other subs examples? i like how you made it simple, dominant 7 can get subbed for a Maj7 a tone down.
You're awesome. Very useful stuff

I am! You can contact me via my website www.christianmillerguitar.com
Hi, I emailed your info@ link on yr website but aint heard anything? Thanks
Just realised that's my other email account... Sorry, will do...
Thanks
VERY NICE BUT A BIT QUICK FOR SOME OF US WHO ARE NOT FAST LEARNERS. KINDLY SLOW IS DOWN A BIT NEXT TIME
Can you please elaborate on the "Flat 7th sub"? That's basically like playing the 7th, 9th, 11th, and 13th of the chord, right?
That's exactly right.
The way I tend to look at it is that you use a major seventh on the b7 of the dominant (or IVmaj7 over V7.)
so if you play a IVb7 over V7 you get 7th 9th 11th and aug 5th.Why can't i do that???
great, thanks
Wow.
Are you off to work?
?
👍🏻
definitely a bird and diz lick!
Does your mom make you play in your bedroom? She probably bored of listening to your guitar playing.have you got a girlfriend?
