Pnin is the only book we both read last year, and to be honest, it’s my favourite English book by Nabokov😳 I think the main character’s serenity is adorable and I like the depthness of descriptions. I understand that Nabokov may come across as pretentious, it’s just… aren’t we all pretentious?😜 Though I like most Nabokov’s last theee Russian novels, and The Gift is particularly poetic in my view (it’s meta). For more poetism in prose, I would recommend The Street of Crocodiles by Schulz. Also, how am I supposed to tell you my New Year’s resolutions if I should keep them for myself? You won’t trick me😜

@@cs0p loved it. a lot of nature related science, adventure and an engimatic Captain. Verne was a genius .. subs weren't even invented yet when he wrote it. I got an edition that also had footnotes. I suggest one like that.
I agree with you about A Caribbean Mystery. I thought it was boring. I’ve now read more than 40 Agatha Christie books and I feel like they vary in quality a lot, thus is why I only collect my favourite ones. I’m going to give Jade City a shot. I do like fantasy, but I’ve been hesitant about picking it up.
I read 62 books in 2023 but my favorite are master and margarita, the secret history and the witcher series. Thank you so much because I read tsh on your recommendation and i just adore this book!!! I hope in this year I also read a book because of your recommendation. I also want to thank you because your channel is wonderful place and I just love your sarcastic humour
Yay Charles! I only read 25 books last year, not great, in part because a few of them were absolutely gigantic. My goal this year is 50, I'll have to make sure I read a few quickies, tee hee. I've read "Mythos" by Stephen Frye; it's quite entertaining if you're into Greek gods behaving badly. He's most well-known as an actor, I didn't know he wrote a novel as well. I have so many little Edward Gorey books! Glad you appreciate him. Here is a 2024 book recommendation for you: "Hotel Du Lac". I've read it twice, which for me is saying something. I don't know if you'll like it too, might as well give it a shot tho! Happy New Year! 🥰
lol squeeze in a few audiobook or 10 ;) ive been meaning to reread edith hamilton's greek mythology. maybe ill try mythos. i bet your taste in all things is elite; gorey fans GET IT. ive added hotel to my list. happy new year 🥳
Happy New Year, Charles. This new video sure is a New Year's gift, especially how you let us fans peak behind the curtain at your "failed" reads for all those other videos than didn't realize for one reason or another. It helps to know you better, King. PS: Video cuts off before you reveal your Top 3?
Happy New Year everyone!! Charles treating us as always ✨✨ I'm soooo tempted to pick Olive Kitteridge and Interpreter of Maladies because of your descriptions 🤭
what! New Year’s Day was already going well and then this! Dipped & scalded toe in the zeitgeist. 😅. Here I come, Elena Ferrante’s My Brilliant Friend, finally. But is it for me? Time will tell. You’re the reason I read my first Jhumpa Lahari this year. 😊 . It’s interesting , your experience with Jade City. Who knows when to keep on with a book & sometimes think to add audio…how is one to know? We don’t. But you scored on that one!
My DNFs for 2023 were: The ninth house (I read the first chapter and called it a day) Sally Rooney’s Beautiful world where are you (my first and last Sally Rooney) Atomic habits (I finished the intro and I want my €2 back) Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace (want to actually finish someday I just don’t know when that will be)
I read only 3 books but mostly bc I have uni and work so I'm procrastinating a lot 😂 1. Discovery of Witches 2. Wuthering Heights 3. Secret History Happy new year🎉🎉
my top books were the rabbit hutch by tess gunty, de profundis by oscar wilde, frankenstein by shelley, romeo and juliet by shakespeare, babel by r f kuang, warrior cats season 1 book 6😭 (greatest battle scene in the entire literature canon), perfume by patrick süskind
Given your reviews here I’d recommend Anna Kavan’s 1967 novel Ice. It’s difficult to categorize something of a disorienting dreamscape apocalyptic fable. Impactful in only ~160 pages and the audio book from my library was quite good too.
Wow, I thought I was the only "freak" who didn't like If We Were Villains. I really thought I was missing something due to all the rave reviews from people. That book didn't hold a candle to The Secret History.
is it a game to try and guess your top 3? 👀 My favourites this year were: the girl with the dragon tattoo the blind by maeterlinck, the talented mr. ripley 2023 wasn’t a good reading year for me so hope i can fix it this year 😅
Steven Fry is actually a famous UK Comedian and intellectual. I love him as the host of the British Game Show "QI". I've always doubted his writing is very good though - he's more fast-witted and a trivia master than a good storyteller, I think.
My goal is 50 books again this year but I want to do one in Spanish. Hoping it will help me learn the language. Was thinking about reading a Roberto Bolano for that goal. Still thinking about it.
I think you might be having a tough time finding a translation of crime and punishment you like. I think the best one is printed by signet classics, black and red cover. I don’t remember the name of the translator because they don’t even put her name on the cover. The one done by Larissa and her husband isn’t good and the other done by that large group of people is also bad. It’s a very good book.
Totally agree re If We Were Villains by ML Rio. How dare people compare it to The Secret History 😮 Did anyone else get to the end of this video?…and the Top 4 are???
I also thought Cloud Atlas was trash. Pnin I also couldn't get into but I highly highly recommend you read Pale Fire (also about a professor). It's structurally brilliant and Joanna Newsom has used lines from it so that's god tier.
OMG why did you do me dirty like that?! What are the top three?! 😂 Also if you lived Jade City, just wait until you get to Jade Legacy. That book had me ugly crying, and totally changed how I felt about the first two.
Would be good if you had a cute pic of the book pop up on screen when you start talking about it. Still waiting on the eye roll counter in the corner too. I am a fan and you said you like to appease your fans on one of your videos.
As a French, french literature is boring I didn’t get the stranger and authors are very much into philosophy and loneliness, pretentious and deliberately trying to shock their generation by being progressive when they are to our eyes conservatives. I will only recommend « les misérables » by Victor Hugo a fair classic, and my favourite fantasy series « La passe miroir « The mirror visitor in English which is amazing. I just saw you talked about Madame Bovary which was my personal hell in high school the author was renowned for hating women and decided to write a book about a tragic woman’s life he saw in the newspaper to try and explain how she could have come to this extent. Zero empathy he hates on all his characters
I didn't like Wuthering Heights either. I just hated the characters and their stupid decisions and awful behavior so much. I wasn't pulling for any of them by the end lol 😬
This is a controversial take and you may never like me after this but I feel like so many, if not the majority, of the greatest books are written by white men and a good chunk of them are by old ones, at that. The great thing about you, though, is that you won’t dislike me for my opinion because you’re a good dude.
My resolution is to be lazier ;
more lounging around reading, less responsibility in general.
So valid!
thats kinda hot

@@the_eerie_faerie_tales omg i took a pic for future ref. ive always wondered if 20000 is a good book
@@cs0p loved it. a lot of nature related science, adventure and an engimatic Captain. Verne was a genius .. subs weren't even invented yet when he wrote it. I got an edition that also had footnotes. I suggest one like that.
@@cs0p oh! I forgot a couple other good ones.. Episode Thirteen and How Can I Help You.
The end! This is how I like my books to end as well. Thank you for this 😂. Happy new year, Charles!
thank you 😏 happy new year 🥳
I agree with you about A Caribbean Mystery. I thought it was boring. I’ve now read more than 40 Agatha Christie books and I feel like they vary in quality a lot, thus is why I only collect my favourite ones.
I’m going to give Jade City a shot. I do like fantasy, but I’ve been hesitant about picking it up.
Which one do you think is the best
@@maidaabrar17 And Then There Were None is my favourite one.
the quality variation is crazy. give jade city a shot!! tell me your thoughts. im trying to start a jade city movement
I read 62 books in 2023 but my favorite are master and margarita, the secret history and the witcher series. Thank you so much because I read tsh on your recommendation and i just adore this book!!! I hope in this year I also read a book because of your recommendation.
I also want to thank you because your channel is wonderful place and I just love your sarcastic humour
i need to get to m&m this year!! im glad you loved tsh found the channel
serving chaos (per usual), love u for it
love you more sexy
I LOVE GOALS TOO!! AND LOVE! LOVE LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL
i l*ve you
my favourite book of this year was age of innocence... absolutely loved it, don't know if it's to your taste but you might want to check it out!
i need to get on my edith wharton grind, ill check it out i promise
lol squeeze in a few audiobook or 10 ;) ive been meaning to reread edith hamilton's greek mythology. maybe ill try mythos. i bet your taste in all things is elite; gorey fans GET IT. ive added hotel to my list. happy new year 🥳
this is so slay of you, charles, happy new year! also i started anna karenina last week because of you, struggling but loving it.
happy new year 🥳 enjoy the AK ride...
is this performance art just SENT ME 🤣🤣🤣 immediately subscribing
welcome home baby 😌
OUR KING HAD UPLOADED 🙇♂️🙇♂️ I shall take time out of my day to watch this at least 3 times
watch it 5 times or youre a fake fan.

I see flowers in the attic on your bookshelf 👀 what did you think about that series
i havent read it yet 🫣 this year tho......
@@cs0p better prepare yourself 🧑🏻🦯🧑🏻🦯
Happy New Year, Charles. This new video sure is a New Year's gift, especially how you let us fans peak behind the curtain at your "failed" reads for all those other videos than didn't realize for one reason or another. It helps to know you better, King.
PS: Video cuts off before you reveal your Top 3?
Happy new year!! the irony of failed reads is that i usually have more to say about them than a good book...
Moral of the story : many videos we will never get to see (that's okay it's iconic)
im a sht influencer i cant help it
Happy New Year everyone!!
Charles treating us as always ✨✨
I'm soooo tempted to pick Olive Kitteridge and Interpreter of Maladies because of your descriptions 🤭
happy new year 🥳🫶 pick up OliveK...you wont regret...
Your eyes are so expressive
i thought you said they were so expensive and i said. you know waht youre right.
You look very handsome darling
i appreciate you saying that babe
We don’t. But you scored on that one!
i feel like theres a good chance you could love Ferrante.. but maybe not. i hope you liked lahiri!! im an audiobook advocate these days 🫣
you're the funniest booktuber fr
thanks 😌
My DNFs for 2023 were:
The ninth house (I read the first chapter and called it a day)
Sally Rooney’s Beautiful world where are you (my first and last Sally Rooney)
Atomic habits (I finished the intro and I want my €2 back)
Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace (want to actually finish someday I just don’t know when that will be)
AHAH dam. ive been meaning to pick up AG 👀
I read only 3 books but mostly bc I have uni and work so I'm procrastinating a lot 😂
1. Discovery of Witches
2. Wuthering Heights
3. Secret History
Happy new year🎉🎉
3 books is kind of a power move. happy new year 🥳
my top books were the rabbit hutch by tess gunty, de profundis by oscar wilde, frankenstein by shelley, romeo and juliet by shakespeare, babel by r f kuang, warrior cats season 1 book 6😭 (greatest battle scene in the entire literature canon), perfume by patrick süskind
Charles do you have a Goodreads I can follow?? Don’t b shy
HAHA i dont have one!!
good vodeo
thanks haha
i recommend you Amy Hempel - Tumble Home you will love it
omg ok added to tbr
Eye-roll count: 66
HAHAH
Given your reviews here I’d recommend Anna Kavan’s 1967 novel Ice. It’s difficult to categorize something of a disorienting dreamscape apocalyptic fable. Impactful in only ~160 pages and the audio book from my library was quite good too.
ooo ooo o o ok ive added to my list it does look hot (for a novel about ICE 😂)
It’d be nice to show the book covers while u talk about them.
no youre right
Wow, I thought I was the only "freak" who didn't like If We Were Villains. I really thought I was missing something due to all the rave reviews from people. That book didn't hold a candle to The Secret History.
is it a game to try and guess your top 3? 👀
My favourites this year were:
the girl with the dragon tattoo
the blind by maeterlinck,
the talented mr. ripley
2023 wasn’t a good reading year for me so hope i can fix it this year 😅
🫢😏 ripley is very fun..if you read only books i recommend your reading year will go crazy i can feel it
THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS (i liked that slim little pink book, but i haven't really read any other babitz) (i am also a little ambi on didion)
ugh i would say i would give it a shot bc you like it...but id be lying. eve and i are beefing and im not saying sorry unless she does first
@@cs0p beh, you’ll be fine without babitz, and she’ll be fine without you
The rules or attraction was my favourite read of the year. Bret is a genius
it is such a fun book. if you havent read the shards you gotta...
Steven Fry is actually a famous UK Comedian and intellectual. I love him as the host of the British Game Show "QI". I've always doubted his writing is very good though - he's more fast-witted and a trivia master than a good storyteller, I think.
innnnteresting ive never heard of this man outside of books. i need to find a clip of the show
My goal is 50 books again this year but I want to do one in Spanish. Hoping it will help me learn the language. Was thinking about reading a Roberto Bolano for that goal. Still thinking about it.
50 is a solid number. tell me if you pick up bolano! ive been thinking about trying 2666 for at least a couple years now
I think you might be having a tough time finding a translation of crime and punishment you like. I think the best one is printed by signet classics, black and red cover. I don’t remember the name of the translator because they don’t even put her name on the cover. The one done by Larissa and her husband isn’t good and the other done by that large group of people is also bad. It’s a very good book.
yooooure right ill look for that translation
Ambivalent not ambidextrous 😂
in a way
@@cs0p per chance
Totally agree re If We Were Villains by ML Rio. How dare people compare it to The Secret History 😮
Did anyone else get to the end of this video?…and the Top 4 are???
comparisons between the two are truly unforgivable.
a new year a new slay everyday
yes 🙏 if this is your resolution, yes 🙏
I also thought Cloud Atlas was trash. Pnin I also couldn't get into but I highly highly recommend you read Pale Fire (also about a professor). It's structurally brilliant and Joanna Newsom has used lines from it so that's god tier.
ill give pale fire a try after lolita! your cloud and pnin takes are reassuring..
A resolution like a birthday wish, you really can't tell anyone.
amen.
Where are you?? … Lead us faithful subs on & then drop us??! Seriously, not fair! 😂 SO Ready for you to drop a new video, please!! 😘😘😘 📚📚
diva, may I call you diva?, kind of obsessed with how often you roll your eyes like mhm yeah I get it
HAHA as a loyal fan, it is your DUTY to call me whatever you please
That was great, thank you.
my pleasure...
OMG why did you do me dirty like that?! What are the top three?! 😂
Also if you lived Jade City, just wait until you get to Jade Legacy. That book had me ugly crying, and totally changed how I felt about the first two.
shut up im nervous about legacy now!! i need to find more good fantasy after im done
My goal is to read 60 books this year. I’m already almost finished #1
you are wellll on track
he's chaotic in the least chaotic way possible
thank you....
i actually gasped when you placed commonwealth that low...i'm so sad
i knowwww i know baby lets kiss and make up i dont wanna fight rn youre acting crazy!!
Would be good if you had a cute pic of the book pop up on screen when you start talking about it. Still waiting on the eye roll counter in the corner too. I am a fan and you said you like to appease your fans on one of your videos.
youre right...i would die for my fans...
Zero empathy he hates on all his characters
we’ve missed u 😝
baby ive been here waiting for you!!
“Everything is fiction, nothing is real.” Way to send me into an existential crisis Charles lol
checkmate 😌
the ending eye-
👽
you're the only stranger on the internet I trust
my knee jerk reaction to this comment was brainstorming ways to betray you.
I didn't like Wuthering Heights either. I just hated the characters and their stupid decisions and awful behavior so much. I wasn't pulling for any of them by the end lol 😬
YOU GET IT. agreeeed agreed agreed. Ill make a video hopefully soon
This is a controversial take and you may never like me after this but I feel like so many, if not the majority, of the greatest books are written by white men and a good chunk of them are by old ones, at that. The great thing about you, though, is that you won’t dislike me for my opinion because you’re a good dude.
so true
That wasn’t a controversial take 10-15 years ago.
@@iheartpinkmochi absolutely 💯!
twelve on the stoner was two on my stoner for 2023
exactly🙌
You're saying French literature is boring?! You didn't read "the count of monte Cristo". Haaaighly recommend. You won't regret it.
i have it somewhere on my shelf...ill pick it up this year and report back ;)
@@cs0p hope you love it.
I have some questions for you would be in my bottom 5 as well.
it really is the worst...
Did Christie do all those destination mystery books so she could write off the research trip that really was a vacation?
Lmaooo low key probably
