This is the vibe. The perfect proportion of "disturbingly beautiful" and "beautifully disturbing". Bizarre and grotesque, but also strangely aesthetic, charismatic even. I feel like most people tend to feel obligated to choose between these two, as mixing them together is very complicated, but you just go and nail it, fantastic.
8:19 so spot on...i barely finish anything for this exact reason. i trick myself into thinking that continuing to hack away at something i already put down is barring me from future progress and exploring new possibilities. now i'm realizing that maybe it's just a mixture of eagerness, greed, and impatience, and that's what's actually setting me back. 🤯
I have found you recently and watched almost everything... i wish there would be more artists who shares their philosophy about art creating! Every word in your speech is a preciousness 😌
Excellent video as always, very good perspective and artistic wisdom, but I need to say how SICK THIS DRAWING IS. REALLY LOVE the whole spooky alien, sort of distorted anatomy thing going on. SO COOL.
The "rendering mindset" that I have is definitely an unknown unknown that you have brought into light. I am starting to understand why I can hardly finish my painting or render it dead. Thank you soooooo much.
im someone who had very little patience or investment on doing certain pieces and just move on to the next idea, lately I realized it is a habit I have developed working as a concept artist. I thank you, for these type of content. It has given me renewed clarity for myself and my enjoyment in drawing stuff. thank you very much for sharing insights!
Man…… you’re a fucking beast bro!!! I love your channel. Your artistic vibes are one of a kind. I literally draw along with you and I learn so much. Thanks man.
I love blending stumps. It helps me understand the mid tones between highlights and dark shadows. You can still go over the soft areas lightly with graphite to give it a grainy texture if needed.
Drawing is my hobby..... Within the humdrum of life and some crisis I decided to stop drawing.. Leave it forever!!..... Then this video comes out and Steven says : "Thanks for drawing today" Me: " Urgh, here we go again.."
This channel and Silvie Mahdal is where I actually learn things and take it with me. To me, drawing is starting to become more and more like a magic ritual, finding the feeling that is the cause to the effect you want. Something that really helped me is thinking what do I want to feel about this drawing when it's finished? Not constantly thinking it, but if I'm about to "slack off" , it's activated, and says this mind state won't result in the feeling you want when it's finished, so refocus or take a break. How can this drawing be inspiering to others if I myself wasn't inspired when I made it? Pretty basic, but I think it's a base state worth implementing, it pretty much guarantees a constant improvement
YES! 👏🏻👏🏻yes……. Appreciation..going thru lots of fear mindsets lately..fear and like “it’s going to be a disaster” I know y’all know this..I’m a baby artist..I appreciate this video so much Thanx and I AM drawing today One breath at a time 🙏🏻🖤
You bring my passion and my intrest in philosophy together! I enjoy every single video, followed some of your tips and I've seen that my graphite drawings of shading and light values are getting better. Thank you so very much!
I start following you because we share the same surname but then I recently start drawing(20yo) and i love your way of thinking and obviously your work amazed me.
Interesting topic. I never heard anyone else talk about this. I came to similar conclusions about the possible mindstates and their effects. It does drastically impact the process and the outcome. And I think its one of the major things that gives the feeling of uniqeness to certain art pieces.
hatching seems a little more useful to me.. the finer you make it, the more obvious any little misstatement of the planes is. I do blend a lot, but I think that blending is naturally a cleanup step, one that it's better to mentally attach to the back of a more structured step. That's my way of avoiding 'blend all the things' In terms of 'you're always drawing' and color, one thing I try to keep in mind is to remain conscious of shapes. I think it's easy to get too general with color - 'make this thing in back uniformly bluer' - and throw away the inherent opportunity to develop value structure / composition further.
My Evil whisper is that "This can be much better than this and what in my mind is much better than what on the paper". This is always thereafter I finish what I start with, and end up feeling so scared to finish what I start with. 😥 I hope it will go away soon. 😣
Awesome vid Steven! Do you find drawing under a recording camera colors your mindset while drawing, or perhaps makes it more difficult to achieve the ones you have mentioned? Or is it something you've been able to, with practice, put completely out of mind? Of course this is assuming that having knowledge that your drawing is being recorded would be a hindrance. But I'm sure there are those who are fueled by the idea of their drawing being a performance art!
Yes I’ve practiced it enough to be mostly used to it now. But if I ever find it irksome I just turn it off- usually when I’m doing a boring step like fixing something slightly or flatting a shadow I’ll turn it off as it tends to make me rush through because it’s taking up huge amounts of hard drive space.
This drawing is so dynamic and well composed. It also seems like you completed the entire drawing without erasing or redrawing any lines. So I have to ask, did you have this idea in your head in great detail or are you pulling parts out of reference and previous works. Either way this is amazing.
Really learning from your course "Secrets of shading" on gumroad. It truly is challenging but you explained it all in the course. Thx! Could you please also add a bonus video there on how to replicate the work in Photoshop or Krita? Or generally, share your wisdom on how to do things digitally? Best from Europe!
Thank you! I will try to cover it in future tutorial videos, but I’m afraid I don’t have a perfect answer. I do it traditionally because it’s much easier to achieve that finish for me with real materials than with digital. I would just apply all the same principles I talk about in SoS but use the airbrush and hard round in photoshop and use a way bigger brush size than you think you need.
With graphite, I love to pulverize my different leads and fold up a piece of tissue into a curved paper airplane type thing, and I apply the graphite almost like paint-and I feel it really helps to open up my creativity. With my pen and ink work, I try to approach it in a similar way by using really fine hatching and slowly building it. One thing you said at the beginning that made me think for a second was how my IG handle is named, if it sounds too cynical-and I wonder if by having that username (it’s not that bad it just has the word ‘negative’ in it), I am giving viewers a reason to subconsciously think that my drawings are more dismal and angry than I intend! I do draw some dark stuff but I try to throw in bits of humor, and at the same time, there’s no way to completely control another’s perception-but I suppose the point I’m getting at is that perhaps I am shooting myself in the foot😫! Love ya Steven, keep those beautiful pictures and thoughts running, you’re a gem!
I was having the same problem today with overusing blending stump to blend and then looking back at drawing and feeling lost also when sketching when I create something that I liked but didn't intend to draw is a weird feeling that I feel happy only if I keep that kind of drawing to myself.
It's like lifting weights. Stick with your program. Stick with what you're trying to achieve with that specific regimen. Don't go to the gym only when you feel like it, because before you know it you haven't gone for two weeks and you're guzzling pop and chips. Don't forgo certain exercises to shorten your time at the gym(unless you're strained for time), but don't always make the excuse that you're strained for time otherwise you'll always think that.
Thank you for making these videos it does help alot :) I had a question..is it bad to have less knowledge about things other than art. may be nasa did something new or a new film just released and i didnt know n people know n feels like odd one out like that kind of feeling... is it ok to just know about art and keep learning more n more about art and not paying much attention to the general knowledge kind of stuff coz that doesnt interest me. Its fun to listen to your words on a loop while drawing your're a good human god bless
How do you know when you are done your drawing? When i draw I always think i should add more to it, which often leads to me not liking my drawing because it's "empty".
The Supreme Intelligence who made the world and everything in it is the Potentate of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. This Supreme Force did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of Ancient Greek poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’
these mindsets... man. But what I really want to know is... how do I get over the inability to use charcoal?? I can't touch it, even the pencil... When the nib touches the paper. I'm getting goosebumps just thinking of it. And I want to use it.
I have this "disgust mindset" when someone tries to commission me.. I feel a distaste when they can put a price in my art(not that good btw), where in reality i really need the money. But the artistic complicated me make me refuse the offer.. Or im just as weird as i think i am.
Understandable, but your bad experience with one blending stick doesn't represent the whole. I know plenty of blending sticks who are really chill and nice, a few do community service on weekends. While what happened to your family was a tragedy that I truly feel sympathy for, it can be incredibly damaging to view all blending sticks this way.
Negativity has gotten over my work, I'm not very skilled and it seems like I deep down feel like it shouldn't be like that. Now when those thoughts come I just say "shut up" and the whole thing blacks out only to come back later, I'm trying to have more fun, be better to myself but It does not seem to be working.
Hello, greetings from Guatemala. I like how you draw and your advice, I draw and I have a decent level of drawing, I draw for hobby and I also do 2d animation, but my profession is an architect, I do not see future here where I live for my hobbies. It is different to live in a first world country than in a third world country.

😲😲😲🥺🥺 the level of your art is overwhelmingly dope AF
I’m sure this channel will blow up one day. Thank you for all the artistic insights, they are very precious.
I know exactly what you are talking about. Awesome way to crystallize what goes through our heads!
That's what we try to do here at the Zapata household, crystallize the minds of artists.
