For Ryan Newman's wreck, I think what saved him was when NASCAR made the Gen 6, they moved the driver 6 inches to the right inside the car. Whoever came up with that idea deserves some sort of award. If that crash happened with the COT or (most certainly) the Gen 4, Newman is no longer with us. Jerry Nadeau also admitted that before his Richmond crash (on the Dale Jr. Download), he removed some padding for the headrest on his seat. Hate to say it but that was a big mistake that almost killed him.
Thank you for including McDowell at Texas! That crash is what made his win at the 2021 Daytona 500 so legendary, as it finally proved how good of a driver he is.
Honestly, you should make a series of the worst (non-fatal) crash from each year for each decade of NASCAR. (1948-1959) (1960-1969) (1970-1979) (1980-1989) (1990-1999) (2000-2009) (2010-2022)
Dude! Excellent idea! I'd like to see stuff like that myself. A lot of stuff like that has happened over the years at NASCAR. Thatd make for an excellent series of videos!
A correction, the Newman bar you mentioned was already in place at the time of his accident. Newman came up with the design after the 2009 Talladega race when he flipped and landed on top of Kevin Harvick. NASCAR eventually implemented the bar after Kurt Busch landed on Newman at Talladega in 2013
The earnhardt bar is in the middle(near rearview mirror).newman bar is a double (front) top hoop with corner gussets. To keep roof from bending down earnhardt bar.
Young Man, you did an excellent job with this video! I don't remember all of these violent crashes, but I do, for sure, remember a good many of them. Are you planning on doing a video of the ten most violent fatal crashes? Just curious. I've seen some of those, too. The results, in a good many cases, were absolutely gut-wrenching, I can tell you that. Russell Phillips, from October, 1995, and Don McTavish, from 1968, were two of the most gruesome wrecks, known to NASCAR. If you haven't seen the footage from either wreck, you'll definitely need a very strong stomach, in order not to throw up all over the place, if you do watch them... especially the Russell Phillips crash. Anyway: I'm a new subscriber, and I must say that I enjoyed...or, at the very least, endured these violent, but thankfully, non-fatal crashes. Jerry Nadeau was so blessed to have survived his accident. Definitely!
This list does not mess around - if I was putting together my own top 10 it would have included most of what you picked! When Earnhardt’s crash kicked the list off (my personal “worst I’ve ever seen live”) I knew the list was legit.
Bobby Allison's crash in '87 at Talladega was a bad one. Friend of mine still has the scars from that wreck sitting in the 5th row close to Harold Kinder, the flag man. So was Richard Petty's at Daytona in the tri-oval. Geoff Bodine's truck crash at Daytona the first year for the trucks series was perhaps the worst crash of all time. I went to Talladega 19 years in a row, both races, and can write a book on all the nasty crashes I've seen there. We sat in the Anniston and Birmingham towers. Neil Bonnett's crash in the Mom and Pop's 31 car was scary. I didn't breathe until I saw Neil climb out of his car. Then 7 months later he gets killed testing Hoosier tires at Daytona. Neil should've never been in that car after his Pocono and Talladega bad wrecks. I really miss Neil Bonnett. Great guy. (BTW, great video and commentary!)
You have got to add Geoff Bodines crash at Daytona in trucks in 2000. I was right there and felt the fireball. Everyone around us thought he wasnt going to make it. It was the definition of brutal
Thank You young fella. Think you got a good head start in being some kind of historian for Motorsports. Like that you don’t show death on your video’s. That’s Class in my books. All the Best. Latter Brother.👍🇨🇦👍.
During the live shot of Martin's wreck, you could hear the sense of relief from Bob, Ned, and Benny. Not just because of how horrible it looked, but it was also the same weekend as the tragic weekend at Imola, not to mention the deaths of Bonnett and Orr from Daytona were still fresh. It did bring one light moment: the last bit of his post-accident interview with John Kernan: th-cam.com/video/q8Gvq3rcc30/w-d-xo.html
Wreck #8: I was a huge Newman fan right from his freshman year on and was pretty adamant about it too. When this wreck happened it was rumored on social media that he had died. My son knew how much of a fan I was and cried when he heard that. He was heartbroken for me and for Newman. Newman recovered but for me and my son things just weren’t the same after that. Rules and regulations were pushing us away from the sport but that incident was the final push. Newman retired and we both stopped following.
He could return, he is a free agent and I think Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing (RFK for short) should bring the 97 car back and Ryan could drive it now that Brad Keselowski drives the 6
I nominate Gordon's 09 wreck at the Glen with Hornish and Burton. Along with the Vegas wreck probably took 5 years off his career. Also I was at Pocono right on the fence for Davey's crash. Though I had def seen a man die right in front of my eyes at a very young age. My brother was a huge Davey fan and was crying. Was very scary to watch.
Absolutely. I could make several of these compilations. More parts will definitely follow featuring both those wrecks. Also his Pocono wreck was brutal too, but the replay footage isn't the greatest from what I remember.
Elliott Sadler has a couple of crashes worth mentioning, 2003 EA Sports 500, 2010 Pocono, I also think Ricky Rudd's Daytona crash in the 15 car deserves some recognition
My wife is buried, at the same Cemetery as Davey Allison. I remember when, he race dirt track. Davey was one-of-a-kind. He's what you call, a real Hometown hero, short-lived. Something else crazy.. I went to the same high school, as Bo Jackson.. The two were the best, at what they did. GOATS for the short, time they played.
18:15 I remember coming back from commercial to the mayhem, this wreck has stayed with me since. he rolls up the catchfence, which then shoots him back down the hill, but that fence is sitting almost 60 ft taller than where he landed.
The Newman bar was actually implemented in 2012 because of a wreck that Ryan was in and it actually was the bar that saved his life in that daytone crash
So many big ones it's amazing there have been no fatalities since Dale Earndhart in 2001 which is s testament to how well the cars are built. Montoya and the Jett Dryer at Dayonta 2012 was big and there were a few at Watkins Glen and Pocono. Quite a few big ones in Xfinity Daytona too.
I know it ain’t on the video, but I was in the stands at Talladega in 2009 when Carl Edwards got launched into the fence. I was around 13 years old. After a great race and fierce overtaking, the crash was the cherry on top. The atmosphere was electric. I’ll never forget that day🤙🏼
Among crash compilations, there's many cases to be made against narration, but certainly not here. I like the way you present the events and add a little bit of flavor to it with some relevant background info. Good job, man.
Now that you have made videos on brutal crashes in both NASCAR & Indycar, F1 should be the next one you should make. There are a few that can make the list such as Mika Hakkinen at Adelaide in 1995, Andrea De Cesaris at the Red Bull Ring in 1985, Romain Grosjean at Bahrain in 2020, Senna at Mexico in 1991, Martin Brundle at Melbourne in 1996, Luciano Burti at Hockenheim in 2001, Mark Webber at Valencia in 2010, Mark Webber at Interlagos in 2003, Kamui Kobayashi at Melbourne in 2012 & Fernando Alonso at Melbourne in 2017.
Hi Chris. I would love to but I'm not sure if I can make it happen and I'll be 100% honest as to why. Even though my content falls under fair use, F1 doesn't seem to care. The two F1 videos I have, they are taking all my ad revenue. This is not a big deal as I'm not in a position to do this full time anyway, but that is the lowest form of punishment I can get for making F1 content. They could possibly black my video in specific regions or all together. It just doesn't seem worth it to put time and effort into something that people might not be able to watch. Never say never though, I may give it a shot once again. I just have to be very selective with the footage that is used. The last thing I want to do though is sacrifice quality because of this, so we'll see what happens.
@@Demise90Racing you can always appeal and youtube can remove the block as long as it truly does fall under fair use. i have had to do that with a couple of mine before
For part 2, gotta include Geoff Bodine's Daytona truck wreck. Without a doubt, in my opinion, the most brutal non-fatal NASCAR accident I've ever seen. Never seen anyone break their everything, and not perish.
Elliott Sadler at Pocono would be a good one… but there just isn’t much video of it. He got collect in a crash & shot straight into a weird part of the inner guardrail/berm hitting it straight on and coming to a dead stop. One of the hardest decelerations I’ve ever seen.
A few suggestions for the next one: David Reutimann at Watkins Glen (2011) Myatt Snider at Daytona (2022) Jeff Gordon at Atlanta (2008) Kyle Larson at Daytona (2013) Geoff Bodine at Daytona (2000) Nice video, very well made :)
Jimmie Johnson at Watkins Glen when he lost his brakes going into turn 1. Full speed, head on, yeeted into the guardrail. He got out of his car and jumped it as if to say "NOT TODAY, BITCH!"
I love how you started the video with Dale Earnhardt's awful crash at the 1996 DieHard 500. That was worse than the crash that killed him at Daytona 5 years later. Also, I didn't know that the Earnhardt bar was installed after this accident. R.I.P 1951 - 2001
I wasn’t even done watching the video and I was already gonna make a comment about Michael Waltrip bush race at Bristol because I watch that race live also Dale Earnhardt spinning out rusty Wallace is Talladega making rusty flip and then they’ll coming back around to check on him or Bobby Allison gone back and first into the catch Santa Talladega through the trial villain I think 88, great video❤
Just found your channel and am really enjoying it. You are a fantastic narrator and the work you put in shows. Subbed. You deserve to do well with this as your content here is really polished. Off to watch some more.....
Wish I knew where my photos when of the Ricky craven wreck, parked along the fence going into turn 1 in my sky blue caddy. See it in the replay and final lap on espn. 3 days of fun. Never when to another race again, my prediction happened at the next race there and 5 years later at Daytona. Two Drawings I did may and June of 96 became true in 2001. Still have one of them.
These Dale Earnhardt wrecks looked a whole lot worse than his last wreck in 2001. There will never be another race car driver like Dale Earnhardt. He was a tough man...
One crash i remember was one Richard Petty had back around the mid or late 80s. The front end went up on top of the wall and the rear stayed on the track. The car started rolling over amd over. When the car finally stopped, the cab was all that was left. No front. No rear. No engine. No wheels. The middle was all that was left. Everything else was literally gone.
fortunately there hasn’t been a nascar driver death in 22 years since Dale Earnhardt. It’s crazy how safe they made stock cars. I wish I could say the same about formula 1
What I find most amazing about Austin Dillons crash was the strength of the fence. if it had of been less adequate it would have been LeMans 1955 times ten. I commend whoever built that fence. it saved hundreds of lives...... and by consequence the sport itself
Did anyone see the Xfinity race from Daytona that happened two weeks ago? I went to Daytona to go see the race, and the wreck on the finale lap LITERALLY WAS THE MOVIE CARS!!! There were three cars in the lead, and they had to determine who was in the lead when the caution came out. It was crazy, but after like five minutes, they gave the win to the 21 car, I don’t remember his name, I’m not really familiar with the Xfinity drivers, I’m more familiar with the Cup Series drivers.
Random fact about me: I was born May 2nd 2009, and according do my mom, after I was born, she was watching that weekend’s NASCAR race, and when they mentioned that it was Kyle Busch’s birthday, my mom was like “Oh crap, my daughter was born on Kyle Busch’s birthday.” Everytime I tell people this, their next question is “Who’s your favorite driver?” And I say “Kyle Busch, look it would be weird to have the same birthday as a NASCAR driver and not have him as your favorite driver, plus, he’s like the underdog, and I support underdogs, I am actually kinda an underdog myself.” If your asking how I found this stuff out, I don’t remember, but I think I was five maybe when I found out. Also, I have a nickname for Kyle, I call him my “Birthday Buddy” since we were both born on May 2nd.
I would not exactly say Kyle Busch is an underdog, he is a Cup champion with over 50 wins. But I hope you enjoyed watching him win last week! He is definitely a very skilled driver.
Comparatively the fatal Earnhardt wreck is not in the most vicious category. However it is on the most tragic list. An unfortunate circumstance where his head was cut in half by metal (from the hood I believe).
Hello Demise90! If you will for the next video, I would recommend you adding Geeof Bodine’s crash. I’ve seen it a few times but ofc I’m not a nascar fan so..
Just want to give you a pat on the back... this was nicely done! You pronounced the names correctly, had all the facts straight, included some interesting trivia information relative to each crash, and you didn't sensationalize any of the content. Thank you for an enjoyable video!
Derrick Cope at a Busch race at Richmond, I think 2002 or thereabouts. His throttle hung going into turn 1 and he hit the wall so hard the body separated from the A-pillar of the cage, which I've NEVER seen happen before outside of a superspeedway rollover. Outside of the two gate wrecks at Bristol (Mike Harmon and Michael Waltrip) it's the worst short-track wreck I've ever seen. Also, I can't remember the guy's name, Danny something? A Goody's Dash series wreck around 2000 or just before, he hit the wall at Daytona and barrel-rolled down the front stretch much like Richard Petty in 1988. When he stopped, every single body panel was gone from the car, he was sitting, on his side, in the middle of the track in the middle of nothing but a rollcage with no wheels and barely an engine. He crawled out under his own power and was not seriously injured. Freaking miracle.
Regarding crash #10 (Earnhardt/Marlin/Irvan, Talladega 1996) and Earnhardt's approach angle to the wall (almost directly head-on), it doesn't seem to make medical sense that Earnhardt survived that one only to be killed in a much more benign-looking 55° angled impact at Daytona. Usually it's the head-on ones that kill drivers, not the angled ones.
After each accident or fatality or even while Nascar is testing out new safety features, these accidents are absolutely brutal. You go back to the 70's and there was no HANS, no safety bar down the center of the windshield, no catch fences ,no safer barriers just concrete and grass and you can bet there were numerous fatalities in those days. Even today there are accidents in Nascar but there are accidents but they've improved safety for the drivers giving them much better odds of walking away, so to speak from these crazy wrecks because they're going almost 200 miles an hour and when they cut lose the driver hangs on for dear life but survives to race another day. The car can be replaced the driver can't.
In regards to Earnhardt's 1996 crash, people seem to have largely forgotten, and it wasn't mentioned here, that Ernie Irvan was visually impaired out of his left eye following his near fatal crash at Michigan in 1994. This is what caused the crash. He pulled down on the flat in the tri-oval which turned his car upwards into Marlin. Irvan had no peripheral vision in his left eye and as I remember, he was seeing double out of his left eye as well. If you're a fan from that time period, you already know Ernie Irvan was already one of the most dangerous drivers of the 1980's-1990's era of NASCAR and this was before his accident. To this day, it has never been justified as to why NASCAR allowed him to come back after the 94 accident.
Thanks for NOT titling this video as the"worst Nascar crashes" those guys never go back past 2010. There have been way worse crashes in Nascars past than the modern times.
I swear, in the 90s, if there was a big wreck at a Superspeedway; Mark Martin was usually in a bad spot and part of it. I don't remember him causing them, but he took many a wild ride because of them.
9:19 when Martins' car hit the DieHard 500 sign, it deflects him just enough to miss those people, if his car wouldn't have gotten deflected, that would have been a tragic outcome.
I've been racing dirt track 30 years super late models and street stock's,I always watched Nascar on TV but the first Nascar race I ever went to was when Dale Sr passed away, Racing will always be dangerous and driver's will die unfortunately just sucks when it happens
The worst crash I ever saw isn’t on here because I don’t think it was filmed. I was sitting in the stands for practice at Michigan in turn 2 in 1994. Ernie Irvin comes into the turn, inexplicably loses control, and goes completely headfirst into the concrete wall. None of us thought he was alive. And the surgeon crawling into his car didn’t seem too frantic, even though he was in the process of saving Ernie’s life.
as watching these crazy wrecks, reminds me of when on Saturdays was watching various movies like The Thunder Road 500 race where unfortunately drivers lost their rides and some lost their lives. 😕Sadness to see any driver suffer such hardship and damage.
The toughest thing about older videos is getting the best quality for the clip. I do my absolute best, but sometimes it's not the greatest unfortunately. There were some wrecks that did make the cut just because the quality was too poor.
3:40 Wait. . . . so, Dale was racing to get his 8th NASCAR Championship, inevitably breaking the 7th NASCAR Championship tie between himself & THE KING Richard Petty during that race in Talladega?!!! HOW HAVE I NOT KNOWN ABOUT THAT?!!!! Well, at least I know now.
Not specifically during that race, but that season yes he was. He had a real shot at it too before this accident. Unfortunately his performance dipped a little as he was racing and healing at the same time.
@@Demise90Racing Well, it is Dale Earnhardt. He has been through worse wrecks before, so when has that ever stopped THE INTIMIDATOR from trying to score another championship? (Don't answer that last bit, cuz we sadly all know the answer to it.)

I'm amazed Earnhardt survived that hit in the first clip when his crash at Daytona in 01 wasn't nearly as violent as this
No shit
Exactly!
I was actually there when he died it was my first and only race. I was like 11 and on vacation with my family
I think this crash was definitely a contributing factor to the Daytona crash. He's brain would've sustained substantial damage.
The belts in his 01 crash were supposedly a couple of years old when it happened, and they snapped. Teams replace the harnesses every year nowadays.
Honestly, you should make a series of the worst (non-fatal) crash from each year for each decade of NASCAR.

Jeff Gordon at Atlanta (2008)
Kyle Larson at Daytona (2013)
Geoff Bodine at Daytona (2000)
Nice video, very well made :)
Thank you very much. I did have some of those lined up for this one, but they didn't make the cut. There will be more to come for sure though!
Jimmie Johnson at Watkins Glen when he lost his brakes going into turn 1. Full speed, head on, yeeted into the guardrail. He got out of his car and jumped it as if to say "NOT TODAY, BITCH!"
You gotta give it to these guys. When they race, they drive. When they crash, they hang on.
I am really enjoying this.
Mike Harmon 2002, Jimmy Horton 1993, Geoff Bodine 2000
Mike Harmon will definitely be in Part 2. The accident was very similar to Michael's, so I opted to go with Michaels for Part 1.
That first Dale crash look so much worse than the one that killed him. Shows what a difference though the angle, and age makes.
I love how you started the video with Dale Earnhardt's awful crash at the 1996 DieHard 500. That was worse than the crash that killed him at Daytona 5 years later. Also, I didn't know that the Earnhardt bar was installed after this accident. R.I.P 1951 - 2001
How Micheal walthrip walked away from that crash in spot 1 is unbelievable...
Dale made a Tshirt after Watkins Glen that said
IT HURT SO GOOD. Damn I wanted one
Yeah he did. Dale was the king of t-shirts. I wish I had one too.
I noticed you didn't mention a real bad one. Cole Trickle and rowdy Burns....oh wait. that was a movie.
If you notice, in the cars that were ripped apart, the roll cage is still intact.
its amazing to see these drivers walk away WOW
Adding to the crash at the 1996 Winston Select 500, if you watch the Satellite Feed, when the crash happened you can hear Bob Jenkins say "Oh S---!".
Dale's accident looks a lot worse than the one that took him from us.
Thanks Michael. I made a part 2 that's on my channel now. The Rusty flip is on that one 👍
Just found your channel and am really enjoying it. You are a fantastic narrator and the work you put in shows. Subbed. You deserve to do well with this as your content here is really polished. Off to watch some more.....
Thank you Robert! I appreciate that. I do my best and always try to improve the videos. Glad you enjoy the content 👍
13:33 good on that spectator trying to offer them a fire extinguisher
Corey says to this day that the hit he gave Newman was one of the most terrifying he’s had… he thought he had killed him
Absolutely, he was in a tough spot there. Thankfully Ryan lived to race again.
You should do Neil Bonnet's 1993 Talladega wreck
2000 Geoff Bodine's wreck at Daytona in the truck series needs to be here
What I find most amazing about Austin Dillons crash was the strength of the fence. if it had of been less adequate it would have been LeMans 1955 times ten. I commend whoever built that fence. it saved hundreds of lives...... and by consequence the sport itself
Earnhardt - "One tough customer"!!!
Still insane to me in that first clip that Earnhardt got right hooked and then Newman'd and that wasn't the crash that killed him.
yo where is geoff bodines truck crash at?
Part 2 for sure
Comparatively the fatal Earnhardt wreck is not in the most vicious category. However it is on the most tragic list. An unfortunate circumstance where his head was cut in half by metal (from the hood I believe).
Also it seems Geoff Gordon’s involved in at least two 😂
Can’t believe these guys survive this, let alone walk away usually.
Hello Demise90! If you will for the next video, I would recommend you adding Geeof Bodine’s crash. I’ve seen it a few times but ofc I’m not a nascar fan so..
It will 100% be in Part 2.
Btw, the crash was very scary so just alert that to everyone while doing the video! Have a good day and hope you reach 50k this year!
And btw, it wasn’t a fatality
I should’ve looked through the comments. Oh well.
Another one, Derrike Cope at the 2002 Funai 250
Just want to give you a pat on the back... this was nicely done! You pronounced the names correctly, had all the facts straight, included some interesting trivia information relative to each crash, and you didn't sensationalize any of the content. Thank you for an enjoyable video!
Thank you Kenneth. I really appreciate that. Glad you enjoyed the video 👍
Can you show me the number five crash ash at the Daytona 500
Newman had a rough one too. I remember that wreck as well
How about Geoff Bodine at the 2000 Daytona nascar truck race?
You'll see it in Part 2 for sure.
Austin Dillon’s crash wowww brings back horrible memories of Dan wheldon
I'll nominate Steve Park's crash at Pocono in 2002. Luckily he walked away from the crash no worse for wear, but the guardrail did not.
What about Davey allisions 1987 crash at daytona
I remember watching the Earnhardt crash, this was so much worse then the one that killed him at the Daytona 500.
The first crash in this video is exactly why he had the nickname swerving Everin. It wasn’t because of his eye problems
Pretty sure his seatbelt broke due to improper mounting at Daytona, that's what made the difference.
I'd always wondered what happened to Jerry Nadeau (second clip)... That's too bad
you could probably do a 10 ryan newman wrecks one hes been in so many
In regards to Earnhardt's 1996 crash, people seem to have largely forgotten, and it wasn't mentioned here, that Ernie Irvan was visually impaired out of his left eye following his near fatal crash at Michigan in 1994.
True I noticed that too
Bad NASCAR crashes top 10
21:12 How many other people put their hand over their wide open mouth!? He walked away!!! 😮
Love listening to Ned Jarrett and Benny Parsons.
I was at the Nascar race where one rode on the fence near the finish line. It was Brutal. It even split his car in half
There are no fatalities in this video
*immediately shows Dale Sr*...I had a wtf moment lol. Great video tho!
Hahaha I would never. I appreciate the comment. Thanks for watching!
g e o f f b o d i n e
I will forever call the catch fence the “HHwheel fence” from now on 😂
The worst crash I ever saw isn’t on here because I don’t think it was filmed.
Jr has to render his own dad whenever he sees the bar
Can u make an f1 crash list
I would love to, but due to strict F1 copyright I am unable too at this time.
I’m surprised Geoff Bodines 2000 Daytona crash
It's in Part 2 on my channel now 👍
as watching these crazy wrecks, reminds me of when on Saturdays was watching various movies like The Thunder Road 500 race where unfortunately drivers lost their rides and some lost their lives. 😕Sadness to see any driver suffer such hardship and damage.
Weird feedback noise on #6 is brutal 😅
The toughest thing about older videos is getting the best quality for the clip. I do my absolute best, but sometimes it's not the greatest unfortunately. There were some wrecks that did make the cut just because the quality was too poor.
3:40
Wait. . . . so, Dale was racing to get his 8th NASCAR Championship, inevitably breaking the 7th NASCAR Championship tie between himself & THE KING Richard Petty during that race in Talladega?!!!
