I was 12-13yrs old, meeting people on "Runescape" was absolutely bonkers (for a kid who's first videogame was "Mario/DuckHunt" combo on the NES).
I carried my chatroom game love into "City of Heroes" and "Guild Wars".
"Halo 2" where my brother and I met our online buddy group (that has lasted over 15 years, and still keep in touch).
Finally "Graal Classic" and "Graal Ol' West", 8 (or so) years ago, meeting friends that I remain in a Discord chat with to this day.

The segment about the death of the down-to-earth, community-oriented multiplayer games is spot on. I miss these days when many game servers were a good occasion to chill and hang out with friends and strangers alike (along with some friendly competition). There are still some servers like that around, especially in older games with smaller playerbases, but indeed it requires some digging. Great vid!

This is so great to see. I'm an "old guy" (43) so chatroom games weren't a part of my childhood. My equivalent was actual text chatrooms using AOL (actual AOL chatrooms on the paid service itself, not just AIM) and things like IRC and telnet games. When visual chatroom games started to appear, I absolutely loved the concept. However, I was an adult by that time, so things like Club Penguin were something I kind of missed the boat on. I was aware of their existence, but they weren't something I actively engaged with. I played (and continue to play) plenty of MMO's, but I always felt the purity of the social experience in chatroom games was disrupted, in MMO's, by the need to do things like level or raid. There was this sense of urgency present that always seemed to make people feel like they shouldn't just be sitting around talking. I was hopeful that chatroom games would continue to evolve, but they just started to kind of... die out.
I remember thinking, years ago, "What needs to happen is that the kids who loved these things need to become adults, get a bit of nostalgia for them, and start reviving the genre." With webfishing, this appears to potentially be happening, and I hope I'm right.

I'm glad to see someone touching on the atmosphere as well. my other favorite thing is the slow manual nature of things. my best example is that rather than just spawning a chair and sitting, you have to set the chair up, jump on it, and use a sit emote. it feels like playing with toys instead of the game automating some of the most fun parts.

I've just started the game, my sole goal to get the guitar. Holy shit, this is the best guitar prop in any game ever. My favorite thing to do now is start servers where I sit and practice, and other people will hop in and do some fishing and chat with me while I practice my song. Immaculate vibes. My only wish is that each guitar has its own set of preset chords, so you could set up one for a specific jam and then another for example with a bunch of basic chords. I also wish that you could tune down strings lower than standard, playing with a baritone guitar or dadgad or something would be a dream. God I love this game

I have fond memories of playing Habbo, Club Penguin, Coke Studio, and Toontown etc. so Webfishing is appealing to me. I still think you can see these sorts of “chat communities” in games like Fortnite, Minecraft and Roblox but those are definitely more player-crafted than developer-curated experiences. Maybe this will spark a revival in the genre of multiplayer cozy games!

As someone who played many mobile games with chatroom feature (in-game chat) it usually didn't end up long that people decided to switch to Discord instead just talking in game.
When WEBFISHING came out, I went to check it's OG which is actually different from the Steam version.

see, you get it. This is a game genre that people have been craving back from games that seem like they were otherwise long gone. I saw another video where someone was bashing this for "boring" fishing and not having immesive gameplay but I just sat there, so mad trying to find a way to explain how glorious this game is but i couldn't remember what the name of the genre this game perfectly captures. This video, captures everything I wish I could've emphasized to this guy on why this is more than just a fishing sim, and is perfect as is.

You did just pull up some positive memories for me of making friends in online games. I have worked so hard on developing my IRL social skills and been so turned off of competitive games that I blocked out my middle and high school years which were saved by these types of games.
Thank you, I look forward to your future content.

In a similar vein, Tower Unite has been my friend group's go-to "just hang out" game for years now, and is highly underrated imo. Yes there are a lot of mini games that can get competitive, but mainly we enjoy playing the arcade games together, decorating our condos, fishing, putting videos on in the movie theater, and generally chilling in the lobby.

I used to spend hours and days in boom ang and Habbo, just talking with other players, and i remember many great people ive meet there.
I dont know when it changed, but nowadays i feel a waste of my free time if im not actively getting "happiness" from the game, completing activities, getting rewards... Advancing in any direction.
Jeez this video made me stop and think. Why am i like this now? Is it because i just grew up? Maybe i just forgot how to find the fun in the non-activity and relaxation? Maybe world just made me so stressed that i need to be constantly chasing a goal?
Will give this game a try soon, when i feel im in the correct mood to reconnect with my inner child and maybe find a way to enjoy the slower pace.
    Great video!!

I really love webfishing!! and it makes sense why as i also miss the days of club penguin and other chatroom games. They were my favourite as a kid bc i was pretty shy irl and it was nice to feel like i had friends lmao. I never really got into fps, and when i dipped my toe into them when i got older i was met with a lot of rude people in VC and chats because I wasn't very good and put me off completely for the most part. I just didn't understand or like the culture of being mean and competitive, so I'm glad there's games like webfishing that are really chill and cozy! 🖤

the chatroom concept is how i felt playing cod in the early days of PS3. everyone used to speak on mic in open lobbies and sometimes the same people would stay in the same lobbies for a while leading to friendships overtime and adding people in consoles to play other games!
but then the party system was created and people would enter lobbies already in a party and never talking or associating with anyone outside the group they came with in game, thats when i really noticed the lack of social aspects in video games as the gaming landscape changed during the ps4 and xbox one era. webfishing seems to revive that concept of 3rd place or as you said the chatroom concept in how people make friends,
i def need to buy this game already so i can play because tbh this looks fun and great

Feral heart's precursor & the bigger Impressive Title servers were also like that too (Dragon's den, Wolf Soul). Too bad Feral heart and most Impressive Title (besides semi active Dragon's den) servers are ghost towns now :/

You nailed a feeling that I didn't even know I had. Growing up, I basically only played Gmod (because that was the only game my crappy computer could run). That wasn't really a problem, though, because Gmod is so diverse and (importantly) COMMUNITY-ORIENTED. It was so easy to hop onto a server and share experiences with other people and bond over those experiences. When I got my new (better) computer, I was able to play tons of other games. But game nowadays really don't come anywhere near the community-building and experience-sharing that Gmod had/has to offer.

This game brought out my inner yapper. Even in vrchat i only ever played with a dedicated group. But in webfishing I’m more than happy to join a public lobby, talk nonsense with a bunch of strangers, and get my K.K. Slider on.
You can often tell the vibe of a lobby by the name too, and if the vibes turn out to be rancid it takes less than a minute to try another. Interacting with new players is also surprisingly fun, showing them secrets or gifting them 99 beers and watching them discover the drunk text effect.
What a game, man. What a game.

Started playing webfishing 5 days ago, I already racked up over 30+ hours of gameplay. It was sooo fun and addicting. I love chatting with friends that I met at a random lobby, we are now steam friends and we often join them on a lobby.
I also love the whimsy part of collecting fishes to complete the journal, and scream in chat 'WHALE!!!' whenever a player managed to fish a huge whale that takes up the whole screen, it was so funny.
Highly recommend the game! It's cozy fun game. There's a lot of mods there too that anyone can enjoy such as QoL, adding extra features, cosmetics, etc.
