My folks had a clock shop in the mid 60s to the mid 80s - i learned about repairing clocks from them and my uncle. The 'slant cog' is called the escape wheel - the thing that interacts with it is called the verge. it's a 'dead beat' escapement meaning it doesn't push the mechanism backward before releasing the escape tooth. escape because it allows the power of the falling weight to escape in a very controlled manner. very interesting - thank you muchly bigly for that. Most tower clocks were custom built per application and to order.

That’s a really fascinating piece of machinery. ‘From time to time’, I have the opportunity to work on Carillon systems from different manufacturers. Some are pretty neat, but they are nowhere near as fascinating as the Troy clock. Thank you for sharing DP, and Happy New Year!
I have Aspergers and clicks are one of my special interest areas. When I was growing up a family friend gave me NAWCC magazines and got me interested. He also helped restore an E Howard 3E striker that was in our city hall in Grand Rapids Michigan before it was torn down in the 60s and the restored click is now in our museum

if i have been by that clock once i,ve been by thousand times alway,s look up then go down on river bank watch tug,s can you imagine what thought degree of mechanical understanding it took to build that hope it last lot longer thank you for posting this

You are a stand-up guy for sharing the family history of the timepiece and extremely fortunate to be in a position to maintain it today. I know there is actually a ting tang strike e howard clock in Savannah city hall in Georgia but they went to a master control system. Hope this one can keep running. There's an E Howard in Goshen Indiana that was recently restored by Smiths Clock and Bell of Indoanapolis and it was not electrified they cleaned up the No 3 striker and 4000 pound bell and faces like new and it's running again like it did in 1870

We have one in our church in my home town. We could hear it ring from home an we was 3 miles from our church... Unfortunately they closed our church in 2002
Great video! Amazing what they could build back then. I couldn't help but wonder if a guy attached an electric motor with gear box (like the one your grandpa made) to the winding mechanisms and added limit switches, the clock could be "self winding". Very neat to see the engineering that wen into that clock.

Interesting just curious is that Troy Indiana? And at the end of the video when you were talking about similar clocks you were talking about quarter strikers right or did you mean all models. I know there a few Seth Thomas in operation left including one at Stanford that strike the Westminster Chime. I didn't know three was a lot of ting tang strike tower clocks by them out there actually

Was disconnected because it was out of time with the other and was fixing and yes can see the weights and there is a mark in the cable where to stop winding
Thought about your video this afternoon driving through Jasper on a "parts run" . Passed St. Joseph's rite at three thirty and the half bell rang . Wonder if it's clock is still set up original ?
