Greetings from Alabama! Roll Tide! 🐘 I like how she let them know how to address her. A huge number of Southern elders are quick to set you straight about how to address them, not to say "Huh?", "What?", "Nah", "Yeah", etc., as you should say "Ma'am?/Sir", when they call your name, and "No/yes, Sir/Ma'am" instead of "nah/nope/naw/yeah/uh-huh", etc. Calling an elder by name is frowned upon, and you can be told off in a very loving way, and get your feelings hurt at the same time. 😄 In my family, (Southern African American woman) my brothers and I, plus our cousins, called our parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, some aunts and uncles and elder cousins by their first names and silly nicknames, but with permission around the house, and never in public or around other elders like family friends or relatives we didn't know very well. My friends assumed I was lying until they heard me call my mom by her first name for the first time. They all said they'd be in serious trouble if they did that. We're in our 50s and they're all still not allowed to use first names, but I understand that my family is quite different from all of theirs. We're very laid-back, but still must remember that no matter how old we get, we'd better never use first names or nicknames with elders when they don't want us to. I would never call an elder by their first name without permission, and those not in our family will still have Mr., Mrs. or Ms. before their name. I'm too old to get switches from trees or my mom's or dad's belt for my backside because of lack of respect. 😄 When I was growing up, it took a village to raise a child, and neighbors really did watch out for each child and set them straight if they got out of line, and then told their parents.👍🏽
The green tomatoes are naturally a bit tart/sour like a pickle because they’re not fully ripe. I don’t even like tomatoes except in pizza/pasta sauce or salsa, but I love fried green tomatoes. The closest flavor might be a fried pickle but there’s really nothing like them. A perfect example of how they took something that nobody wanted and made it into something incredible.
There are different kinds of soul food just like there's different kinds of BBQ, different kids of pizza, etc. Because there are SOOO many generational recipes out there, people can't say that this or that isn't technically 'SOUL' food. Kool-aid is a flavored powder. Usually unsweetened though you can get individual packets that are sweetened and can be added to a bottle of water and blended. For the unsweetened version, you add a cup of sugar (some go overboard, lol) and Kool-aid packet to 2 quarts of water in a pitcher and blend. They come in a variety of flavors...grape, strawberry, tropical punch, orange, lemonade, cherry and many many more. My favorites are Tropical Punch, Black Cherry, and Blue Raspberry. The Strawberry Lemonade and Strawberry Kiwi are great too.
Tina, is gumbo as good as it looks? :) Also, Kool-aid is powder? That's so strange! Our concentrate which Ollie refers to is a bottled liquid that we generally call Squash which comes in all sorts of flavours and brands and needs to be mixed with water.
@@AliKaiProject I've actually never had gumbo because there's certain seafood I don't like but I would say yes. I would be ok with one without shrimp because I do like spicy flavorful foods. My favorite shellfish is crab so I'd be all over it, lol. I would say Kool-Aid is close to Squash (I couldn't remember what it was called, lol). I'm sure now that you have a PO Box, you'll get to try Kool-Aid out. I'm certain that if you wanted to try gumbo, someone could send you a season packet as well. Americans love our conveniences so we have spice blends for any and everything you can imagine.
