Lake Speed Jr. Is one of those rare individuals that has amassed so much critical information about Motorsports along with engine oils and their lubrication properties that he would be the most valuable asset to any organization that chooses to become involved with. Everything that he talks about contains essential information that everyone can benefit from no matter if it’s their lawnmower or their championship winning Drag Racing machine. The man is simply amazing and I appreciate the knowledge that he shares with everyone 🏁🏁🏁🏆 👍

Hey Tim. Just finished listening ....5 Star interview and discussion! Thanks to you and Lake for that. Personal takeaway from the '70's through to later racing technology is that piston rings, lubricants and any element that would contribute to a parasitic loss has continued to shed weight, mass, and even viscosity over time.
Thanks Bill, I learned a ton too, technology has grown and developed so much from mid 70s. I know next engine I build, where I need pistons are getting 1mm lateral gas ported rings....Oil production and development very interesting too.
@@DragBoss351Cleveland Lateral gas ported rings are cool. Being out of serious racing for as long as I have I was totally unfamiliar with this technology. Jenkins began gas porting pistons in the early 70's and soon after many racers followed along... even serious street guys. For anything other than limited use they would carbon clog though. Same problem with the early gapless rings when run over time. Yeah, I really like the concept of the ring reliefs! We always did increase the second ring gap to reduce flutter and carbon clog even though that was contrary to recommended procedure. The general consensus was the top ring ran hotter so if anything IT should have the larger gap. We marched to a different drumbeat and it never bit us. Thank you again.
@@billfioretti3013 Either I posted twice or deleted post. But I never knew when gas porting of pistons started. I do have a set of old pro stock pistons with gas ports. They must be from mid 70s. Running some old pistons with .043 rings and gas ports, always wondered how they stay open. Lateral gas port rings from now on...Looks like your drum was beating well. Thanks Bill.

In my opinion 60 - 70 PSI is even more than you need for most applications. There's a reason small block Windsor stock pumps bypass at around 50PSI. Because that's all that's needed. My 600 horsepower Windsor is about 45- 50 PSI at 7000 rpm when hot.
I think that is true, with priority oiling. In the Cleveland case. Which is non priority oiling, I think higher psi, 70-80, is not a hindrance, but a benefit, from experience.
