  • @zerwee7409
    @zerwee7409 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    none of the other music he recommended scratches anywhere near the same itch crumbling does
    prob bc most music just doesn't get as beautiful and otherworldly as that album does
    a part of the beauty of crumbling is how progressive and dynamic and textured everything is without seemingly throwing a whole lot of disjointed and goofy 'avant-garde' ideas at you
    and how it doesn't rely so much on constant change/evolution or even lyrics/vocals and instead just focuses on the bare beauty of the instrumentals and chord progressions themselves (like another comment said his "lacking on melodies" thing is absurd to me because right after how alien yet perfectly natural the sound design is it's the bare melodies and chord progressions that pull me into these songs the most)
    it's both incredibly simple and homely yet massive and hard to untangle in a way most albums aren't as they're either too busy and tight or too loose and chaotical
    i genuinely believe he's too jaded and overexposed to boring ass hipster indie psychedelic/electronic bullshit to appreciate actually beautiful bands like fishmans and mid-air thief like the rest of us do
    same deal with the ghost pop tape and alvvays though for different genres and types of overexposure
    i hope he hasn't said things too awful about cornelius broadcast tujiko noriko life without buildings or susumu hirasawa is all i can say

    well, if you're not a big fan of crumbling, I'd suggest checking out their previous album "Gongjoon Doduk" It's a lot more folkier, but the songs are very catchy and the way it blends psych pop and folk is wonderful. It's also a lot more lofi but that's what really gives it it's magic. White Room and Moon, and the Knot are some incredible tracks on the project you should check out.

      @@Jgreasy that album is way out there and got lost in the shuffle of music somehow. I didn't get age of Adz the first few plays but Sufjan made something insanely experimental and it succeeds but you have to give it an open mind and a dozen plays or so. I still think Fantano's Carrie & Lowell think is the worst swing and a miss of all time on the channel. I thought a Beginner's Mind was more accessible and should've been on more number 1 positions in critics list for 2021. I also love the All Delighted people EP but I don't care much for the x-mas albums tbh and he has a lot of output where he's just screwing around a bit with instrumentals and collaborations and such. But Age of Adz and especially the song Futile Devices gives me goosebumps and I think there will come a time twenty or more years from now people will think of Sufjan as one of the heirs of Bob Dylan in terms of genius. Carrie & Lowell should be in any respectable top 10 of teh 2010's too

I'm more of a folk-y than a rock guy Carrie & Lowell or Elliott Smith self titled is more my speed than Elephant but I do appreciate Jack on an intellectual level and he's basically the only artist still making like blues rock that is still in the conversation. I mean he is the new Rolling Stones but you've probably guessed that I don't have a personal connection with them either. People seem to critique the vocals on Crumbling along with Ceres & Calypso in the Deep Time but these albums in their own rights are niche yet detailed soundscapes that show lots of color through it's fluidity in layering and harmonics. I don't know much abt painting, or even theory, but listing to these 2 is what I imagine it's like in front of a Van Gogh piece off of mescaline. Prolly sounds like some theatrical fused mess to most, but against some other 2010 records in their own similarly fused genres, these records stand out in what makes that more mainstream electro/art/pop sound not redundant. It's something more loose and human natured. Idk, Crumbling deserves it's recognition

  • @CooksBooks
    @CooksBooks ปีที่แล้ว +28

    What an absolutely confounding take. The vocal harmonies are one of my favourite parts of Mid-Air Thief’s stuff. The vocal performances are relatively under-stated, there’s no power-ballad style belting, but that’s also not the vibe the album is going for. Also, as for not being an innovative folktronica album, I hardly consider it to be part of that genre despite what it’s listed as on RYM (as someone who likes that genre). Yes, it uses acoustic instrumentation mixed with electronic music, but so does Jockstrap and I don’t think many people would consider them folktronica. I wouldn’t say any of his songs have the structure or sound I’d associate with British, American or Korean folk music (although I’m not an expert on Korean folk).
    Mid-Air Thief’s musical philosophy is instead, more in line with a new set of bedroom producers who focus less on genre conventions and more on using the best instrument for the job, be that electronic or otherwise.
    Mid-Air Thief is spacey and ethereal but also surprising and off-kilter whilst remaining down to Earth and emotional and human. The works are great compositions not just as pop tracks. And, despite being well rated on Rate Your Music, Mid-Air Thief is still relatively obscure, and so calling them overrated is a bit ridiculous, as well as being wrong.

    My pick for the most underrated album of that decade is Linkin Park's A Thousand Suns from 2010. LP decided to make a concept album with heavy electronic influences and less metal and I feel like their fanbase wanted nu metal or had outgrown them and critics straight up ignored it because, well, it was Linkin Park, well past the nu metal era.
    But in my opinion, not only is it the best album LP ever made, but it has aged a LOT better than one would expected. It's catchy, sounds fantastic and flows really well, and sticks the landing too. It's not FLAWLESS, especially due to some of the rap elements (although they're still incredibly catchy, some lyrics aside), but it's certainly underrated.

And here we revisit that dungeon and add in MBDTF and Yeezus. You can even see the AJR albums still there in the background. I wonder what Anthony means by this.

    Understandable about not personally liking the mid air thief album as much as other people, but those were some pretty surface level critques and unnecessary comparisons. If the most you took away from that album is that "sufjan did it better" or "phil elverum did it better" then that is a terrible mindset to have, because I think those artists and the albums theyve made are CLEARLY not only in a completely different sound and genre, but are trying to convey different conceptual and emotional objectives. Especially the comparison to Age of Adz, complerely missing the mark on both those albums and what they are achieving. The only two things those albums have in common is that they both fuse elements folk and eletronic music, even though clearly sufjan is pulling from a more glitchy idm world where as MAT is pulling from psychedelic electronic production ala Animal collective possibly even some prog electronic. TLDR: its ok to not like album obliviously, but if your major criticism of it is based mainly off comparing it to other artists which are not relevant to the album at all, then its a poot mindset based off biased preconceptions.

    • @PixelMan111
      @PixelMan111 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a weird mindset I kinda notice within music circles. Obviously, innovation is necessary and naturally happens, but I get this vibe that people act as if an album isn't doing some extremely different genre no one's ever heard of, it's just "derivative".

    • @PixelMan111
      @PixelMan111 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DavidAlejandroYT I agree, however even in this case I believe this album pushes heaps of ground within the realms of psychedelia, electronic music, and folk music. Other albums may fall under similar categories (like the ones he mentioned) but none sound remotely similar or close to what crumbling. Same can be said for an album like age of adz by sufjan. Go turn that album on and tell me if crumbling sounds remotely similar to it.

    atrocious take of it being overrated, but much worse is how you critiqued Crumbling, Antony. dodgy vocal performances? WTAF. the amount of harmonizing and vocal execution that is present in Crumbling is insane, I think it tends to blend in more with the instrumental which IMO makes it a more full of listening experience, but to say vocals are dodgy is just confusing to me??. and then naming other albums in the folk/electronica genre that have so little in common with Crumbling to critique it, I think is really lazy. it just makes me think you didn't even listen to the album. I continue to be wildly impressed each time I listen to Crumbling. Sonically, conceptually, lyrically, literally in almost any sense I look at it.
