They had tried to break through in Australia but never really succeded. So decided to go back to the UK to try there. Before they left they recorded this song. On the way back on the boat they heard that this song went number 1 in NZ and number 3 in Austrailia. This song has infact been covered by Status Quo of all bands.
Bee Gees never saw themselves as a disco band they were just started making R&B songs from 1975 with Jive Talkin' and were caught up in the whole disco movement by accident.
This ended up being a big backlash for them with the disco demolition night and also radio stations having Bee Gees free weekends because they had been dominating the airways from 1977 to 1979, so the stations started saying "we also need to play something else"
From 1975 they wrote 14 number 1 US singles starting with Jive Talkin' and ending with Woman In Love performed by Barbra Streisand in 1980
There is an excellent HBO Documentary, “How Do You Mend A Broken Heart” all about the life of The Bee Gees. Lots of facts and how disco almost destroyed them. No other band was ever disrespected for being too great. Can you imagine being black listed because they were just too good? But they were determined to continue doing what they loved, so they persevered. Barry is still producing great music. He released an album “Greenfields, Vol 1 in January of 2021. It was #1 in several countries. He is working on Vol 2! So you can start your dive down the rabbit hole of the Be Gees back in the late 60’s and keep going until you reach today and then wait for Sir Barry Allen Crompton Gibb to release Vol 2, hopefully this year! "To Love Somebody" was written to order by 21-yr old Barry and the 18 yr old twins by their manager for Otis "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" Redding, but before he could record the song, he and his band died in a plane crash. Bee Gees recorded and released it themselves. A month later Janis Joplin covered it, and a couple of hundred other artists followed suit over the years. So the song is a classic.
I can't wait. They have a younger brother Andy Gibb that was born the year the BeeGees were established. His name is Andy Gibb. His first three releases hit number one. You should react to Andy on Midnight Special singing,

I have 149 favorite BeeGees songs. They wrote them all. There are a couple hundred of their songs i love that didn't make the favorites list. The best rabbit hole in the world. One masterpiece after another. Too Much Heaven is amazing. They wrote for Celine Dion, Barbara Streisand, Diana Ross, Dion Warwick, Kenny Rogers and the song he did with Dolly Parton called Islands In The Stream. Olivia Newton John, Frankie Valley, Conway Twitty......Barry Gibb and Michael Jackson recorded a song called All In Your Name.

"Spicks and Specks"-- It's an old UK expression for "bits and pieces"-- so the song speaks to the bits and pieces of the singer's memories of past girlfriends.
They were traveling back to England to try and make it because Australia at the time was not a big music hub. While they were on the ship they found out that they had their first number one hit in Australia and this was it. Make sure you check out To Love Somebody official Video of them singing it live. Black music was the biggest influence in their music but producers did not want them singing that R&B genre because white people did not sing like that. To Love Somebody was written for Otis Redding.
They have written all their songs they sing. To love somebody was one of the biggest covered songs that they wrote. So excited. After to love somebody you should do Lonely Days and How to mend a broken heart. They wrote these songs after they got back together they broke up for 1.5 years and they wrote both these songs in one afternoon and they were their first american #1's.
They had hits in each of 5 decades. You'll want to check out their Still Waters album from 1997 and their This Is Where I Came In from 2001 (ish). They had a unique ability to blend in with the times. You'll also love Too Much Heaven (they donated the proceeds to Unicef making over 10 million dollars for that charity.

The Bee Gees started performing at the ages of 6 and 9. Over five decades of great songs. I have over 150 favorite songs by them.
The Bee Gees were never Disco, they never knew anything about the term disco and never went to discos themselves. After Barry discovered his falsetto voice, they were writing songs for her new album, when their producer R. Stigwood asked them to write the soundtrack for his new movie saturday night fever. They told him that they wouldn`t have time for this, but he could have some of the songs they have written for the new album. They knew nothing about the movie.The Bee Gees' involvement in the film did not begin until post-production. As John Travolta asserted, "The Bee Gees weren't even involved in the movie in the beginning ... I was dancing to Stevie Wonder and Boz Scaggs. The brothers wrote the songs "virtually in a single weekend" at Château d'Hérouville studio in France. Saturday Night Fever was the best-selling album in music history, and still ranks among the best-selling soundtrack albums worldwide, with sales figures of over 40 million copies.The album stayed atop the charts for 24 straight weeks from January to July 1978 and stayed on Billboard's album charts for 120 weeks until March 1980. So they become the "disco kings"without knowing what disco was/meant or being interested in disco music. Barry once said he's never been to a disco!
And they also never made covers (except 0ne or two, mostly as tribute songs - will you love me tomorrow). They rarely sang songs from other artists (not covers!), for example a Beatles song medley when they were hosts at midnight special!
So if you hear a song sung by the Bee Gees you can be sure that THEY wrote it too!

Barry said: “We didn’t even know who the guy was. He brought the clothes, “Here, try these on.” So suddenly there we were, looking like Abba. It was just a bit of fun.”
The 1967 tv appearance of To Love Somebody and Robin’s 1989 live performance of Joke are masterpieces!! They grew up performing live, including on Australian tv. The earliest footage is Bee Gees 1960. No group worked harder or with more passion for music or determination to achieve their dream of world fame and immortality through the body of work they would leave behind.
Their first big hit back in Australia, at 19 for Barry and 16 for the twins. There's an early music video that's fun and Beatles-like. They've written over 1000 songs. Their 60s music is fabulous. They were famous back then, too.
The song is from their second album released in 1966 and this live rendition is from 1974.

The Bee Gees are an Australian band and this song was the last of 13 45's they released here before they left in 1967 to try their luck overseas. It was recorded in Sydney in November 1966 and the B side was 'I Am The World'. Went to number one here in Australia.

The movie "Saturday Night Fever', is where their disco era took off, and it was a cultish-like phenomenon.

They never made disco music.. they just got tossed into that genre.. ... their songs that got thrown into the disco category are r&b/dance music ........they absolutely loved r&b, blues., funk ect.... ❤

I'm a big fan of the BeeGees. But not of this one. Amazing 60s hits to listen to are: Idea, Tomorrow, Tomorrow, Run to Me, And the Sun Will Shine, Morning of my Life, and I Cant See Nobody. All of those songs are great & hope you react to them!
