Glen, you made the world a much better place. May God be with you and you be with Him. Rest in peace my good fellow. Hope to see you in the beyond. RIP. 🙏
The Meistersinger prelude is the best and greatest polyphonic music not written by J. S. Bach. I think that was the main attraction to Mr Gould. Notice how the polyphonic structure of the music is much clearer here than in orchestral performances.
Bruno Monsaingeon. He's a French violinist who's made some terrific documentaries on Gould and other great musicians like Richter, Oistrakh, and Menuhin.
I don't see why people often complain about Gould humming, especially here. Gould's humming is what I normally do when I listen to music as beautiful as this as well, only that I restrain myself from doing it in public so loud. When I'm watching and listening to this video at home, I find myself humming or even singing loudly the same lines as Gould is doing!
Would Wagner laugh? He was a German...... Great interpretation. Nice to find a sense of humour in classical music. Look, this bloke can talk and play the piano at the same time without losing his place..... WOW!
To me, Wagner'a music is like the powerhouse of classical music Imagine Mozart's or Haydn's music like a fluttering butterfly on a warm breeze.....Wagner's music is like a thumping steam engine rolling through a quiet town.
Guys from the bottom of my heart I tell you this: I have an unbelievable love for Glenn Gould but you guys ...the comments here just make me cry ...fuck everything else...MUSIC IS OUR GREATEST FOREVER LASTING FRIEND !
Thank you for this upload how lovely to see that smile Glenn! I love this man so much the greatest intellectualMind and performer of all time RIP darling man on this 35th anniversary of your passing - The tears fall - thank you for every gorgeous glorious note you left us
Now I got five words for this: GLENN GOULD IS THE DUDE!! (And of course Richard Wagner is the MAIN DUDE...!) This is like some alchemistic transformation of heavy bloodred wine into weightless liquid silver - proving that there's so much more to Wagner's unbelievable music than just a load of harmonic and instrumental overkill! Man, I'd love to hear the whole opera in this version (with Glenn Gould singing the vocal lines like "dee-dee-ja-daaa-PA-PA-PA-PAAAAA!!!"... LOL!)
You are quite the wordsmith, i thoroughly enjoyed reading your comment. Much obliged for the giggles! (And yes, you certainly have a point on the counterpoint clarity too!)
You know you're cool when you're able to transcribe Wagner in an unliteral an inexact manner ;) My mother doesn't like it, but I think it provides a beautiful and valuable insight to the world of music and what one can do. The technique of transcription is rarely tought, as far as I know, that's why I admire it, especially when the musician is not just copying the scores but puts a lot of own interpretation into it. Glenn Gould once said, the only justification as a musician is to reinvent a piece with your own interpretation, to create something new...
@@phoebelinden9602 You're absolutely right! He was a genius & I seriously doubt if anyone will ever be able to achieve such an original & gorgeous "voice" on a piano! I have every CD & DVD he recorded as well as every book written about him.
I think his transcription is quite literal, he replaces the entire orchestra with the piano, for me it is SPECTACULAR. Of course, we could not expect less from such a magnificent artist.
Por Dios santísimo... toda esa música en su mente. Gracias, Señor, gracias por mandarnos, así sea de vez en cuando, estos reflejos de tu Gloria, hecha arte y locura genial.
@ryofurue You are entirely correct. I've always loved this piece. Thank you for saying that. I've never heard anyone say that before. It's a great example of counterpoint and Gould's ability to expose the melodic lines.I played this piece in an orchestra but, I've never heard the lines so clearly defined.
3:43-3:45 belong to the most notable seconds of musical history. I have been searching for them for a year, listened to Gould’s rendition of Bach’s D-moll concerto (1052), stuck and did not listen to anything except for Bach’s 1052 every day (!). This is the power of monsieur Gould. Finally I find this damn video! Again, 3:43!.. Opera singers will go bankrupt! U jelly mr Pavarotty? MR GOULD, U MAD!
yes! He directed these several programs about/with Gould. Gould scripted the entire thing very precisely, including exactly what Bruno said, and when. There are several such filmed "conversations," including about fugues by Bach, and lots more.
I would have loved to have met Glenn. I can listen to his playing all day and can even put up with the singing. He seemed like a really nice guy too if eccentric.
C'est tout simplement fabuleux. Si nous étions tous comme Glenn GOULD, le monde serait parfait. WAGNER aurait été surpris par cette conception idyllique.
@@vladiinsky I agree, most conductors have absolutely no idea what they are doing when it comes to Meistersinger. I do like Celibidache's rendition. Please do check it out.
@ryofurue I was thinking the same thing. Although the colors of the orchestra are a part of what makes this piece great, I love how clear everything is on the piano.
He always looks like a kid who is too small for the piano. Can't imagine there are many piano teachers out there teaching that seat-height. But, boy, could he play.
@Altsaemisch You ought to know that these documentaries were decided in every detail by Monsaingeon and Gould together, so, if he was in this position the reason was that it had been decided by both him and Gould that it was the best position for the scene. Any other commentary doesn't make sense... ;)
@lacteprealable yes i found it thank you. He recorded with multitracks? are you sure? because it seems to me that there's only one piano in the recording.
He didn't know it, but his landlady could hear him play, through the walls, and often she would stay up and listen to him play all night. I bet she was one of the lucky ones who got to hear his Mahler, Bruckner, Strauss, and other symphonic transcriptions.
A monster interpreting a monster! This guy makes a single instrument sound as full as a whole orchestra! One of the very greatest indeed....
y en espanol ? Porque en ingles ?
"Monster"? Only to dwarfish characters.
Everytime im driving in my truck and Die Meistersinger comes on the Radio i always turn it up full volume and exclaim "Meistersinger?...what else!"
How can you dislike this ? This is pure smiles, pure ecstasy ! Glenn Gould is an angel!
Oh! REALLY! 😂❤
Let The Man.
He is the Singer!
João Augusto Garcia de Santana.
ele era um pouco maluco né
He's having so much fun. This is great.
Fantastic singing! Some of his very best singing ever.
This musician makes me happy
The joyous essence of being.his uttered words.i do agree
Gould playing Wagner on the piano and I love it. It feels like a guilty pleasure.
Glenn Gould plays and smiles like an angel.
How transparent it has become through his interpretation!
As always, I enjoy Gould singing along just as much (if not more) as his playing. I am absolutely in love with him. :)
Mr Gould speaks the very same way he plays. Very articulate.
showman

Agreed
Especially beautiful aria Hans Sachs, which sings Glenn Gould 🤣
Such a beautiful, crazy, wonderful, man-child.....

Glenn Gould having fun. What a great musician.
Seldom seen someone so happy ... This is what music is all about, and Gould knew it better than anyone else!
I don't see why people often complain about Gould humming, especially here. He takes so much joy in music.
Born the same year as I was 1932
, but died in 1982 @ the young age of 50 yrs. I am still here to enjoy his fantastic piano playing. 🎹
Very impressive how he manages to do the trills so exactly while speaking!
Would Wagner laugh? He was a German...... Great interpretation. Nice to find a sense of humour in classical music. Look, this bloke can talk and play the piano at the same time without losing his place..... WOW!
I just can't feel anything except happiness for Gould and being unbelievably jealous for Monsangeon ....for witnessing that masterpiece...
I never get tired of listening to this & to see GG giving such beautiful smiles! A Canadian genius, undisputedly!
2:49 The nice thing is that Gould is actually singing an additive voice to the music, which is NOT in the score .... this is wonderful ...
sehr schön beobachtet :D
Are you sure it's not in the score? Sometimes I know he would sing voices he simply couldn't reach/play to fill in the gaps...
An out and out potty genius! I love this video.
To me, Wagner'a music is like the powerhouse of classical music

@@AvntXardEschubert but no Mahler?
Glenn Gould was the real deal. Holy mackerel..
his musicianship is beyond imagination, his technique is unparalleled, Glenn Gould
I wish I could hear the orchestra in his head....
sublime.
unfassbar genial- hab ich noch nie gehört vorher
So happy! Gould in his element. With a very cute puppy dog haircut. That look and smile at 3:45.
Glenn died so young..only 50 yrs. He was born the same year as I was 1932. But lucky for us he left us with wonderful music. 🥇

THAT COUNTERPOINT!
OH! Amazing That! I always Dreamed to have concentration like this, he's so genius, so concentrated. very good!!!
The sound of genius to the max.
Thanks for reminding me how wonderful Glenn's transcriptions of Wagner are, and how wonderful his playing is!

3:23 "Bayreuth lives on!" :D - the whole part from 2:50 on is just magnificant and always reminds me of Mahlers fifth Symphony, the finale
Fantastic pianist....!!!
Gosh, it's wonderful.
3:40 perhaps the only known moment on film where a "normal genious pianist" sings louder than his own instrument
Herr Richard Wagner und Der Glenn Gould, das is doch hervorragend! Nec plus ultra. Kiitos, danke cmtmusik
Sheer joy of music! Wonderful!!!
"You wanna hear some?"
Right?? How charming is he?
His mumblings in all their glory! Gould was so awesome.
What a sweet heart so sad he shogged off so early.......lovely man and adds genius to genius!
i think no conductor or musician succeeded to make Wagner so lightly delightful as Gould in his (unfortunately) few transcriptions.
Wow! Mr Gould, the consummate musician.

and he ends with : "ok!" lol Glenn Gould was truly unique.
Unique Pianist !
Identically remarkably and non-standard played music of Baсh and Wagner, Beethoven and Brahms....
Thank you for video.
I love how he can make anything sound like Bach
😂
Wagner’s counterpoint in “Meistersinger” was inspired by Bach.
A genius that we regret and mourn :(
The One, the Only. He's immortal! This September 25th he would have been 84. Happy Birthday dear sweet Glenn!!

La musica dei Meistersinger è talmente bella e cantabile che si può gustare anche senza l'orchestra con il pianoforte suonato da un grande artista.
anche di più ....Sono d'accordo con Lei.

Most people will probably think I'm crazy for saying this but this rendition on piano with Gould playing is more enjoyable than the original for me
Because he is a greater musician than anybody who conducted this music... simple as that :)

Exellent !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...
Can you imagine Glen Gould and Jackie Dupree playing together?
Or "Glen" Gould and Anny Mutty!
Or even better: Davey Oistry!
Or the king himself: Jaschy Fetzi!!
I think it's very impressive and very funny. He would have been a good friend.

Wow. Wish this was avaliable in score
such a weird brilliant wonderful little man
ha ha, "What else?"
Wagner, motherfuckers.
i'd wish he had transposed the whole ouverture and record it.
He did transcribed the whole overture and recorded it+

All in all, Die Meistersinger is Glenn's favourite opera composed by Wagner
Mine too. :)
Nice

Impressive to see a human so totally inhabited by music - transcripting almost live an opera for the piano
Grand acteur, contrôlant, cabotin.
I wish he hadn't done his sing along with Wagner while performing...but it wouldn't be Glenn without it ;-)
