I met Ishii Maki at a concert at NHK Hall in Tokyo in the late 90's. I had recently been to a gagaku concert during which the first half was traditional gagaku and the second half was Ishii's modern compositions for gagaku orchestra. I told him that I very much admired his modern gagaku. He thanked me and seemed genuinely surprised that a gaijin would even be aware of gagaku music, let alone his modern variations of it.
Sounds rushing like water, whistling like arrows, hissing sounds followed by a roaring chorus, gentle breezes making a small harmony, fierce winds a great one...
