- Today's Heartist chat features the Ace director J. Mahendran exclusively on Bosskey TV. Mahendran is regarded as one of the greatest film makers of Tamil cinema and has inspired many upcoming directors. He made an immediate impact with his first directorial venture Mullum Malarum (1978).
Mahendran entered the film industry as a screenwriter, written scripts for nearly 26 films. He has been an inspiration for the legends of Tamil cinema like Mani Ratnam and Rajinikanth.
His Nenjathai Killathe won three National Film Awards including the award for the best regional film.
Mahendran shares some of his positive experiences that he has had in the Tamil Film Industry. He talks about Venu Chettiar who was the producer of his first film Mullum Malarum, and in particular about Super star Rajinikanth and his extraordinary talent and charisma. He also focuses on his relationship with cameraman Ashok Kumar who had been the D.O.P for most of his films. Mahendran also speaks in length about the movies he directed Johnny, Nenjathai Kilathe and many more. He also shares his views on the negatives of the film industry; his bad experience with a producer etc.

Want to commend Bosskey for the terrific people he gets to interview, and the facts he goes into depth with them. However, he needs to not interrupt by trying to either show his understanding or crack a joke. For instance, the entire backstory that Director Mahendran was narrating about the scene from Jhonny got completely sidetracked @34:10. They never got back to it because Bosskey felt the need to show to the director that he (Bosskey) understands what the director was thinking. Bosskey Sir, your job is to nudge the narrative along, not bring it to a full stop with trying to prove that you have gathered a bunch of tid bits. Why do this? You have already succeeded in setting up a fabulous interview, and asking terrific questions. Why interrupt them with your predictions of what might be going on in the interviewee's mind? If he avoided it, these interviews would be true gems.
