Interesting video! But the original roots didn’t really look “rotten” - they just looked seriously dried out, which is understandable when there’s only a small block of water-holding moss at the center and the rest is dry bark. Retail orchids often die when they get home because the nursery mixes are almost purely moss, the roots are root-bound, and well-meaning but inexperienced buyers water too often. Orchid roots need air their entire length and humidity, not wetness. Some roots will grow sub-substrate and some will be ‘aerial,’ or above ground. When I buy an orchid, the first thing I do is remove it from the pot, finger out and discard all the mix, cut off whatever’s truly rotten (mushy roots that can be smeared off to exposed their threads inside), rinse it under my tap, shake it off, then repot in an orchid pot (with many side holes for air) that’s just slightly bigger than the store’s, with my own fresh substrate. I use an orchid bark mix and very thinly layer my own special moss every inch or so to add structure. I don’t put moss on the surface. Really, I the moss is almost notional. I water it all, and am careful to wick off any water that falls into the crowns of the leaves. Radical trimming and transplanting, which this is, is extremely traumatic to the plant. It will take a long time to adjust, so near-term expectations must be low. After that, I err on the too-dry side and don’t water until the moss seems dry to the touch. Only after a few months do I add an orchid fertilizer. Worst case, all the flowers might fall off, but they’ll return the next season. I’ve actually found my orchids love to go dormant over winter, with only occasional misting.
Yes, but when we need to repot an Orchid we do it immediately after flowering. The plant requires a lot of time to get used to the change, and it may not bloom the following year if it is too close to the season. Moss (sphagnum) is not recommended. It brings nothing and it is acidic. Some Orchids do not appreciate this acidity. The bark should not be too fresh, it contains essences, terpenes that must have evaporated, Orchids do not appreciate.
Having doubts, I spent a lot of time checking the presence of polyphenols (like it is says) in white rice: there are none at all. In fact, most plants contain more. Tea contains a lot of it, it's known, but... it's in dry weight! All colorful plants are rich in it too. There is no need for vitamins either because plants synthesize them, in fact they are not vitamins for them. In terms of mineral salts, white rice is not very rich and almost nothing passes into the water, especially without cooking. I think that if the technique works, it would be as effective without anything, because the simple act of removing ALL the dead parts, changing the substrate, keeping it moist and airy, in the light, is effective.
Thank you for this video. When the video began playing the music immediately caught my attention and brought tears to my eyes. I watched your video over and over again! I recognized that song too. A beautiful hymn. I first heard this song in the score for True Grit. This was indeed an absolutely beautiful version written for piano.
Wow dramatic results and quite fast. Congratulations to you. The plant was a total mess, but now healthy and vigorous. Years ago I had a 25 yr. old phaelenopsis that developed rot in its crown and lost all of its leaves, leaving only a dry stump. The 'local Experts' told me it was lost, but I kept it and watered regular and in 8 months it came back and lived for another 10 years. Thank you!

Love the Hymn. Leaning on t h e everladting arms of Jesus. What have I to dread what have I to fear. Leaning on the everlasting arms. I love that place of peace, found only in HIM..
It is so refreshing to hear an old gospil hymn playing in the background instead of the other garbage I don't want to hear. I usually mute videos so that I don't have to listen to the pop, hard rock, or rap. Thank you for doing this.
Some things are not clear. Probably due to lack of talking or text and just music playing. What's not clear is how often, in those 45 days does is she water the plant AND is she always using the garlic/rice water? Then afterwards, is she always using garlic/rice water or just plain water!?
@@lovely-mk4rt So here's an update. It's my hubby who is the Orchid person in our family. LOL He made this water mix and started using it. What he does is seems to use this mix every 2nd watering (or so). The Orchids do seem to love it.
Wow, I was just looking at the orchid that I got; a white hummingbird. It's so weak and with yellow leaves that I thought I was going to lose it. Thank you very much for the idea. Is that water that you spray later, also rice water?😊
Rice wash - the initial step to masking L.A.B., lactic acib bateria = beneficial micro organism. Garlic contains organosulfur compounds particularly allicin which is growth promoting, Willow water would work as well.
The plant that you held up and turned around wasn’t even the same plant. There were drainage holes at the bottom of the original plant (time stamp 1:58)and there weren’t any holes on the plant that you showed at 7:33 time stamp. You keep flipping back and forth between different plants 😢
Actually, there were no holes in side of pot when putting in bark, holes appear when orchid being misted, then disappear again later. I suspect she filmed process several times with different plants, using the clearer shots in video. I have revived an orchid, removed rotten (black) roots, soaked in room temperature water 20 minutes, then placed in pot with pebbles in base (keeping roots out of water and increasing humidity), sprayed with Orchid Myst. I repeat this every week, and mist with water everyday.
It was the same one after washing & resting while preparing the next step. When you saw it first they were removing all the dead leaves & roots. After that when dry it was brown, then some green appeared after washing the live roots.
You did it once or you have to use this rice-garlic water every watering? The water at the base and in the spray is the rice garlic water or normal water? Thanks 🙏
I water mine every 3-4 days with just rice water. Save the water you wash the rice with in a large bottle and you can simply add some in a bucket of plain water diluting it then submerge your orchid in it for 3-5mins.
I used garlic and rice water on my orchids and definitetly got pretty instand root and leaf growth. I have 3 mini orchids (I would say phals, as they came from the supermarket). Sadly they all lost their flowers quite fast, not liking where I'd put them...they didn't grow new spikes last autumn, and I'm wondering what I can do to get them to do so this year. They're in a room now where they will experience a drop in temperature soon as it's starting to get colder at night (Ireland). Day temps are still going up to 20 some days but dropping at night now. What else should I do to get spikes? My sister in law keeps her house much warmer than I do, and her orchids which are by a frosted window with no direct sunlight FLOURISH, always flowering - but I don't have a similar spot, sadly.
I’ve read that you should repot the orchid as soon as you bring it home. None of the TH-cam videos show orchids repotted when they have flowers on it. I’m confused. Should I repot it now or wait for the flowers to die and fall off?

@@sleepyjoness yes, when I said sun, I meant light but also didn't know what kind you had. As you are saying, Phals do best in indirect light. However, I have mine in a window that gets some direct light but it's dappled by the plant that blocks the window. But Phals can handle direct light if it's more morning or mid morning.
