great hustle from both players in this extreme heat 🔥🔥
Mark did finally put more spice on his serve at 0:4 and got a few "free points" for an easy hold and another ace on game point at 2:4.
But that didn't make up for his 12 unforced forehand errors.
Joey kept winning 7/12 points at the net.
Marks dropshot-Lob-Dropshot-Lob-Lob-Dropshot-Lob combo at 18:32 was brutal

12:15 in case you still dont get it Mark, you were hitting forehands from too close to the body, which carries that 'pushing it long' effect.
I get why you cant see that during a high intensity match though
9:59 Joey lets loose with the Midwest Polite, "let's go". No fist pump and he was turning to the rear fence. Perfect because it was for himself and not for Mark or for the cameras.
Joey was rock solid while Mark couldn’t shake him with all of his poor sportsmanship.

The forehand slice on short balls is a real weak point in this match. He gave his opponent to many easy/neutral balls where he needed to be attacking or at least hit a neutral ball...
What I took away from this was Mark getting rattled early in the first set by Joey's ability to take shots that usually put Mark's opponents on the defensive, and instead return them with interest. That's what started the slice-a-rama in the first set, and once Joey had Mark in "try things to see what works" mode the match was as good as won.

By watching Mark's recent matches, here and in his channel, I have noticed that Mark has started to hit late forehands. Practicing with a ball machine could help him to find the right rhythm.

Could the air temperature (extreme heat) contribute to Mark’s problem with keeping the ball in the court (going long) when he’s swinging out? Would a 2nd racquet strung 5lbs tighter have been any help?
maybe a little bit, but not enough to swing this match more than a point or two IMO. Gear can make slight differences but wouldn't change who wins this one
Could be, worth a try. Gear can make a difference on a close in rather than out ball, that leads to confidence rather than anger, which leads to a shift on the next ball, etc. etc. Especially for a confidence player like Mark. And have the opposite effect on opponent at the same time. Easy to underestimate momentum shifts and how subtle the initial shift can be.

Mark had the same disease Scott did in his last match on the channel. Just my opinion, but I don't think that Mark is doing himself any favors by berating himself for so many errors. I do acknowledge that whipping himself up has obviously worked in the past and I certainly admire his fighting spirit. However, his self-talk combined with the emotion behind it can be literally mentally toxic over time and it's got to be exhausting in the moment, too, particularly in the heat.... Scott's suggestion for him to change racquets was probably a good one, too. It might have at least helped Mark shift mentally, if nothing else...
That being said, we are all different and it is definitely Mark's style. So if that is the only thing that works for him, so be it... It worked for McEnroe... Just my opinions, for what they are worth... I'm sure Mark could beat me love and love blindfolded, so what do I know?? LOL
Joey played really well and I was very impressed when he came back with excellent overheads after whiffing on that first one! I was, also, very impressed with that one point where Mark dropshotted and lobbed Joey to death! Very entertaining! At the time, I thought that might be the turning point in the match in Mark's favor! Mark maybe should have done more of that to get himself out of his funk and to wear Joey out??
Overall, a very entertaining match! Looking forward to a rematch down the line!
It's more of a schtick for the microphones, really. It's the sansait brand of humor.

Mark: Perhaps too many slices? You might need to hit more forehands/backhands in the match to get in rhythm, or the errors happen.
