I was one of the registered drivers for this bridge when it first opened. Just want to point out some information during my time driving on this bridge pre-pandemic times.
    1. It is true the registration for using this bridge is absolutely awful. I had to buy separate insurance for both China and Macau, and that's on top of my HK motor insurance. So in total, you would need to have 3 insurance and their permits for the 3 jurisdictions. The insurance price varies depending on your car. If you have a supercar or an expensive car, then you need to pay more.
    2. Validity for the permits, insurance, is for 1 year ONLY.
    3. The toll for the bridge one way is around HKD$150-$180 (forgot the actual number).
    4. Parking at the Macau border is around $160-$180HKD for 12 hours. You need to pre-book your parking spot for the 12 hour parking session. The 12 hour session is very specific, 10am-10pm, or 10pm-10am. These were the only options available, and if you go over, there is a penalty. And there is no point arriving early. The parking is right after the bridge, cannot drive inside Macau. Getting inside Macau would require parking your car at the border and take public transport.
    5. You can only drive your cars into Macau or Mainland China with a separate license permit which majority of people do not have including me. You would need to fulfill many requirements and pay a lot more money to do that.
    6. The bridge is toll free on special Holidays.
    7. My running cost for using this bridge for a normal sedan car was $1000hkd round trip NOT including the insurances and permit.. This $1000 includes fuel, parking, tunnel fees from HK Island to Kowloon, and bridge toll fees ONLY. A ferry will cost $250-$300hkd per person. Do the math and make sure you fit as much people in the car as possible. (FYI, taking a ferry only require ID or passport to cross border, you do not need all those insurance or extra permit).
    8. MY journey time compared to taking a ferry: Four Seasons Macau TO home in Hong Kong was 40mins quicker than ferry.
In conclusion, it was fun driving for a year. But I will not continue to register unless they bring down the annoying paperwork and the cost down. As well as letting drivers driving into Macau (at least let drivers park at the casino hotels.)

      Also would like to add:
      9. The most expensive insurance is actually the Macau section as the Macau jurisdiction is only a few hundred meters. So you are paying the mandatory Macau insurance for just a few hundred meters of road. The majority of the bridge's jurisdiction belongs to Mainland China and Hong Kong.

In the coming decade, trillion dollars worth of construction projects will kick off as part of the blueprint for the new capital ( Beijing will be retired )! Mr Xi has to extend his politburo welcome for 5 more years ( Jiang x 10 yrs, Hu x 10 yrs, Xi x 15 yrs ) to usher in China becoming the world's biggest economy, thereby taking the hot seat in UN - & welcoming UN to it's new domicile in Central China ! In China, there are stories within stories - 明修栈道,暗渡陈仓 !China has a big plan, Jiang worked the 6th part, Hu continued with the 7th part, now Xi is taking the 8th / 9th part of it...... When the UN acknowledge China as the world's biggest economy, the world will know what is the GBA, Belt & Road Program all about.....?

This shows you how much the Hong Kong government represents the will of the people. The typical person in Hong Kong will NEVER use this because they don't own a car. Most people don't need a car, so usually only wealthy Hong Kongers would even have the possibility of making that trip. And what would they do in Macau except gamble. How often would they go on vacation to do that?
Similary, only wealthy Macauans would have a car to go to Hong Kong.
An underground train would have been better or at least not as bad.
The other environmental disaster was the sheer amount of raw material used and the environmental costs in producing that material for something with essentially no economic or social value.
