I stayed in one of the larger units in July in Terlingua, Texas. So cool. You absolutely cannot see inside. We tested it. 😁 No birds flew into the glass, but two ravens were obsessed with their reflections. They spent time yelling and knocking on the glass with their beaks. Having the desert as your view made for a very special experience.
I went to their Houston factory open house tour on the June 3rd open house. I flew all the way down from New York. These units look larger in in life, and excellent build quality. Martin and Joe were great to meet and talk to. I have a deposit on 2 cabins, it's been a slow permit process, but looking forward to finally getting these.
I have not seen this one. Your humor is half of the reason I am here. One of these would be awesome in a natural setting like shown. My concerns would be breakage due to errant gun shots, Sasquatch throwing rocks at me, I am hoping these are shatter-proof.
Kerry this is one of the coolest houses you showed these mirror houses are beautiful the reflection of the mountains the camouflage the reflection of the snow the reflection of the trees to blend into the environment is beautiful
YYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSS!! Men, and I just moved out of TX too. However, things still in storage and might just get large one as studio outfit and outpost there -- wow, IMPRESSIVE!! As always, thanks for your shares. We appreciate you!
We were in talks to get 2 of them near Yosemite NP, but they weren't manufacturing in the US yet. There is a beautiful spot in Three Rivers, CA that has them available to rent. Would love to stay there and check them out!
Being that Houston is hot and humid, it would be great to check them out in the summer and see how they handle that. Of course the best way to test how it handles the beating sun would be placing one in New Mexico, Arizona or Nevada. Either way, this is great to have them in North America, makes the transportation cheap and these look smaller than a mobile home, so it would be a bit easier to move. Great job Kerry!
Very sleek and at one with nature. The OOD house may even usurp my favorite prefab home, the Lloyoll Skali... but really, Kerry, what about the birds? Well, one thing's for sure. The little birdies will set up nest in your white fluffy hair.
Meditation rooms, honeymoon cottages , offices on a campus for deep focus occupations with a central meeting space, a birder's wildlife observation dream, cool. Thanks.
Their website FAQs oddly claims, "Mirrored glass that reflects 97% of UV rays provides a cool haven in the hottest desert." But since most of the thermal energy in sunlight is carried in the infrared, the statement is bizarre and misleading. Glass just ain't a good insulator!
@@bengorman5214 Thank you for your response. I went to their website but didn’t check the FAQ’s. Even low E, dual paned windows aren’t enough to keep the heat coming in from a south facing window in the heat of the summer.
@@Erin-Thor The "Texas Way" would be to crank up the AC full blast. Anyone can do that, of course, but it's not energy efficient and would be very expensive to maintain. I'd hate to see the power bills for that arrangement!
in daytime, the glass is 100% fully reflective. At nightime, you can see inside with the lights on inside. Some customers choose a customization option and have OOD work with the glass maker St. Gobain to add a frosted glass decorative layer to the lower half of the glass walls in the bathroom, for added privacy.
Hopefully, they will add a unit with 1 bedroom or 2 bedroom options. I could see using the Signature model as the living space and 1 or 2 of the Glamping units as bedrooms. But it wouldn’t be fun getting up to use the bathroom at night.
I didn't see any storage for the glass cleaning supplies - gallons of Windex, some squeegees, chamois, and a good amount of microfiber cloths are going to need a closet or cabinet of their own. 😄
If it's made in Texas, could it be mounted on pontoons and secured on each corner with a pier post so it can rise and fall with the flood waters and come out unscathed when the waters recede ?
How about a lot of soap and large squeezes and maybe a retired fire truck for water supply. Now, the price just jumped up. The bright side , let the grandkids have fun cleaning glass and jumping on and off the truck.Ha- Ha.
OMGGGG I am so so excited. These are AMAZING. This is a final choice for me. Pleaseeeeee if I can't build on my property can I put these ON WHEELS and surrounded by a deck?
I've been a guide in Denali NP, AK for 20 years. Been looking for a modular to retire in up there, probably more coastal and a bit closer to Anchorage. Was interested in Boxabl, but I can probably get some snails to build a place quicker. The bird concerns are a relief. Just wondering, Brown Bears, a real concern, like to push on things, doors etc. Wonder how seeing their reflection in those big windows would hold-up to them? I like The OOD.
They have invited me to do come do a video factory tour and stay at one of their ADU's when I am in Dallas in September. I'll let you know if you can see in or not. That was one of my questions also.
I live in the Phoenix Metro area. My backyard borders a wash, and I get about six bird strikes a year against the patio door. A potential buyer should definitely discuss this issue with the manufacturer.
First thing I thought of was sun reflection and very dry out west.would it or could it cause desert fires?? Was also wondering about birds smacking into the glass.??
They're really cool, but they're not really "homes", IMO. They're way too small to live in full time. They're more weekend getaways or ADUs, or "short term rental business" as pointed out. They'd need to be at least 2x the size to to approach being a *livable* home. They should really make them "joinable" so you could combine 2 or 3 of them and build out each section however you want, but at $125k for the Signature House, combining them is not cost efficient at all. The price for one is pretty ridiculous. BTW, I listen to your videos on full volume so my neighbors can appreciate the info as well.
You always provide interesting housing possibilities. The strength of the glass would be important to know. Is it bullet resistant and, should a golfer slice a shot and the ball hits the window, will it break?
I was just thinking about OOD as I watch a Golden Finch kill itself by crashing into a glass window at a friends house. The tech they use to help prevent that is genius.
I grew up with 180 degree view of Lake Erie with four huge floor to ceiling picture windows. They didn't have any special coatings on them. Birds would fly into them once or twice a month, more in the spring time. Some would recover others didn't.
This reminds me of the John Hancock financial building in Boston where mirrored windows help with holding in heat and reducing energy use in the summer. But one thing I do know too the windows kept falling out at first and the area had to be blocked off due to windows falling down. So it is interesting how does the building hold up for a few years.
I would wonder if you could have a little less glass on the building. Also, how strong is the glass as far as breakage? Really like the idea for a mountain getaway.
They need to get Cornell University to do a study on this siding. Collisions with structures, like windows, are the NUMBER ONE cause of bird mortality in the U.S. Also, some people, like me, may not even like the look, so offering another option for siding, or two options, would bring more sales.
I hope they make them addable soon. A living kitchen dining unit, a master bedroom unit, maybe even a jack & jill unit (bath in the middle), and a smaller utilities unit (air, water heater, washer/dryer, etc. Oh, and also more affordable! Just remember: never cast the first stone if you live in a glass house!!
