I was born in Whitley bay and remember going to the Rex hotel every Monday night to the dance held there …but those days are long gone …I’m 73 now no longer a carefree teenager…last time I was in Whitley bay was 2011 when my mother died…I live in Corfu Greece now…the video was very nostalgic and almost had me in tears…well done.

As a kid growing up in the 1960s Whitley bay was packed with tourists and day trippers. Scottish fortnight when train loads of scots descended on the place for their annual holiday. Along the front of the Spanish city were small gift shops selling the usual seaside stuff. At the back of the Spanish city was a static fairground, the main attraction in the town for young visitors. It was the in place to go for teenagers.

Beautiful town. Its greatest asset is the beach, not these stupid drunken yobs. Looks tidy, brand new pavements and full of lovely victorian houses. The Spanish City is world famous. IT is perfect to live by the seaside yet near a big city such As Newcastle offering plenty of fresh air and space to all those leaving the cities and working from home in today's covid world. THX

Had the best two weekends of my life in this town around 2000 / 2002 approx. My friend had his stag weekend here . We liked it so much we held it twice. Great atmosphere, great buzz, and NO trouble anywhere day or night . Visited every pub down that street . I think there was a choice of two night clubs at the bottom . I am sure a few people ruined it for others but even the locals were super friendly to us . I can honestly say i felt very at home there and have wonderful memories . We were a mix of Irish and English guys up from London . I always liked going up north but Whitley Bay was super special .. Thanks for making the video ... I am too old now for all that pub crawling . clubbing thing but I hope that the town gets a new lease of life some day again ..

Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits was raised in Blyth just along the coast from Whitley Bay. His Tunnnel of Love record was about Spanish City back in the day when it had a pleasure park. Whitley Bay and Cullercoats are both mentioned in the song. The regeneration of the Spanish City and seafront is just lovely. We have lots of restaurants in the town and independent shops on Park View and our Jam Jar Cinema is great.

Although the anti social behavior amongst out of towners on the lash was a bit of a problem, the main reason Whitley Bay fell into decay in the early eighties was when B&B owners & Hotels realised they could get year round income instead of just seasonal income, by letting rooms to the unemployed & homeless, who can blame them.
Years of underspending by the council was also a deterrent to visitors, the Spanish City dome was green with mould & moss for over 2 decades, you gotta wonder where all the council tax went, , , , , until you see where the councilors & MP's live.

Beautiful video! I was born and brought up in Whitley Bay many years ago but sadly had to leave at 11 years old due to family circumstances. I've been back a couple of times, ... over the years not as much as I would like, and the area around the Spanish City has definately changed. My first house I ever remember was Brook Street. I love this place with all my heart, it is 'Home' , and for my 52nd birthday my partner has booked us a holiday in two weeks. I can't wait! Mind, he might have a bit of bother getting me to leave! You passed Bar 52 near the beginning I spent a week in Whitley Bay a few years ago and when me and my wife went into Bar 52 and had a nice (but expensive) evening. Since the place we stayed in was only about 200 yards away and had no driving to worry about. The Crab and Waltzer near the Spanish. City is a great place to eat and Trenchers does wonderful fish and chips. There are plenty of parking places and you can visit the Blue Reef Aquarium nearby. The Queens Head pub also does great meals and has free parking. We only paid £160 for the two of us to stay a week here at one of the boarding houses so it’s not expensive if you look through Trip Advisor for places to stay.

It's far from a ghost town, unfortunately this is filmed at 'the wrong end' of the town. In reality it's a vibrant town full of foodie heaven restaurants, cafes and bars. The film maker has said he's going to come back and film the Park View end and hopefully along to Monkseaton and then back down to the Spanish City. 😍

  • @1951GL

The visitors, in numbers, now come to the Spanish City area and walk on to the Rendezvous Cafe - where Vera has been filmed for years.
This area and Park View are the "go to" places. Far superior to the South Parade bars with Grab A Granny Night and coach loads of wazzocks causing mayhem, especially during bank holidays.
House prices have shot up on the back of the redevelopment.

I couldn’t agree more with the commentary below who praise the the impacts of the change in Whitley Bay. I grew up there and the closing of the nightlife has been a tremendous change for good. I read your narrative on screen and wonder if you would like to be woken to assaults, vehicle damage, public urination and dedication out front of your home nightly. If that is the only option for local employment then the box within you live must be hard to think outside of. I love your vide walk of WB but the way you lament the lack of social disorder leaves pause for concern with due respect. Things have improved no end in WB. Period.

I spent my childhood in Whitley Bay left, and never been back. It is now an epitaph of the decades of neglect by socialist councils, more reminiscent of somewhere in Eastern Europe. An absolute disgrace.

I too spent my childhood in Whitley Bay; the early 60s, perhaps before the yob culture, but I see considerable improvement along the seafront. The run-down areas centring around regions of previous social misbehaviour should now be a focus of repair and continuing improvement. I feel that Whitley Bay is reasserting itself and rising, Phoenix-like, from the ashes of previous demise. Just the opinion of a hopeful old Geordie.
