I very much like the technique you used to add legs to the fly. It seems so simple yet I've never thought of it in fifty years of tying. I typically add partridge, woodduck, or hackle fibers on either side and tie them in. It works but it is difficult to get the lengths the same on both sides and sometimes the legs get pulled down along the side. This is a great idea and I'm going to try a few nymphs right now with that technique.
excellent technique and demonstration for a fly that will catch fish - but I honestly listened for your soothing voice. very calming in these stressful times
I thought that I’d seen all of Mak’s fly videos, then this video popped-up... a very nice pattern. Even though I’ve seen him do it before, I like how he burns the clear stretch, creating a clever tab/j-hook for a solid thread catch. As always, thanks, Mak!
You tie some excellent fly ,I've been tying your patterns for awhile and the work amazing on crappie and bluegill as well as large mouth bass and small mouth bass
Just tried this pattern and I love it. Can't wait to try it. I bought a spool of vinyl rib at an outdoor show several years ago for $2 but never used it.
I agree with the majority, the tubing heat stretch is a great idea. You just gave me another steelhead pattern, many different abdomen colors can be used under that tubing. Thanks for the video.
Mak, love this fly!! I'm a beginner at tying flies and have learned a lot watching your instructive videos. BTW my flies are still on the ugly side so I'm hoping they will start looking as good as yours with practice. Mike
Hi Mike. I am Glad you finding the videos helpful. There is no such a thing ugly fly Lol... its always the most scruffy flies catch more fish. Just keep practicing, soon you will get there. Cheers mak
Hey Mike, it does take lots of practice before your flies start to look as good as the ones in stores. If you are just beginning to tie I'd suggest tying at least four of the same pattern so you get used to working with the materials and techniques. I'm sure you will see improvement on the last fly compared to the first.
Mike Pennino Thats great you have bought a better Rotary Vise, this makes big difference for tying. Its great that flies are looking better. Keep up the good work Tight Lines mak
What I did in the 80's; buy a fly tying kit that comes with a how-to book. Not be able to make heads or tails of the pictures because tying is about actions that can't be conveyed in a still-shot, and then give up in frustration. Drag out the kit twenty years later, after you discover this new internet thing and TH-cam and try again with better results. After you buy new glue and salvage the bits that haven't been eaten by weevils.
I like many aspects of this fly! Looks like it may have some challenges to get though but worth it in my opinion. Nice fly , to the to do list it goes 😆. Thanks for the video!!
that looks another great fly. I bought some of that clear stretch at a tackle shop but it is too thin, I will have to get some thicker and give this fly a go. Thanks Mak
mak -flies Thanks Mak, I bought some yesterday and had a go last night, the hardest bit is melting the ends without burning the tying thread which i did a few times. The fly looks good so thanks for the information. I will let you know how I get on with fishng this one and the damsel. I wont be fishing until the season starts here in about 6 weeks time.
Very well tied. It looks so simple but but only for the masters. I will tie a few for tomorrow on the Waioeka River, North Island New Zealand. Tight lines.
Outstanding. Pardon my ignorance, but what is the small block being used to rub the thread? A wax of some sort? Thank you in advance and thank you for sharing this video, Makflies.
Great videos! What might I use as a substitute for pheasant tail, to make the nymphs more durable? I'm trying to focus on flies' effectiveness and durability, more than how they look to me, or how true they are to an original recipe. Thank you!
Nice I tied in red, olive, black and the red color don't work as well as olive or black on my home streams but I still use red for rainbow trout cause the like bright colors like pink and red but I used olive and black dyed pheasant tail for this fly and they work great and I've found if I coat the stretch tubing with Sally Hansen it's extremely durable more than a regular pheasant tail nymph
great fly. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I do have a question though. Would you change anything if you were to tie this in a size 20 or 22?
Many Thanks for nice comment. Yes for that size reduce the size of material accordingly. Unfortunately I can't tell you the exact size of material. Thanks mak
Simple elegant and beautiful, thank you! Not that it makes a lot of difference, but have you tried creating "gills" on the abdomen between each wrap of clear strip? The fish likely won't care, but it will catch more than a few fishermen. Oh, and we just subscribed! Cheers!
Nice fly! I imagine the rubber silicone body will buy another second of time in the trouts mouth to set the hook before it spits it! Not keen to stretch the body cord with a vision 2 in 1 vice, hook might hit my eye or something else? Thankyou!
Thank you my friend. I am glad you like it, I know but some time to make something effective you have to take a risk. But if you take your time I think you should be ok Lol... Regards mak
You finish the head with "varnish" is it varnish or is just a head cement or super glue? Also what are you using for dubbing wax? Bee's wax? I love your videos. Very well done.
Hi Andrew I am glad you like my Videos. I will upload more Buzzers soon and I love tying Buzzers. I get very busy around this time of year with tying orders, can't find enough time. Hopefully soon I shall upload more Buzzers. Regards mak
mak -flies Thanks for the quick reply. Fantastic videos. I like your precision and thread control. You're very good at building a nice tapered body on the hook shank. Well done!
Mak I am trying to figure out what vise you are using,at first glance I thought it was an Atlas Anvil but on a closer look it is some other brand,Would you please let me know what brand of vise you are using?thanks Earl
I also use an anvil atlas vise -Your jaws have two notches;mine are smooth, and my hook tensioner adjustment is a large knurled round nut ;the locking mechanism is a uplifting lever, yours appears to be some sort of star shaped nut;thanks for prompt reply
hi mak great video ,would like to know where you get your feathers from , i got some on ebay but don't look any were as good as the ones you have ,thanks ......neil
Hi Neil,, I do buy from different places, If you live in UK then there are lots of supplier , for eg ( Lathkill , Lakeland , Harvey Angling ) etc, If you buy a quality , graded stuff its much better, ,,, Cheers mak
mak -flies thanks mak for fast reply ,just learning to tie got my vice from lakeland so will get feathers there ,had just got cheep of ebay cause i watch ur videos as i tie then strip hook back down and start again ,been a great help mak love the way you present the videos 5 stars thanks

Matt Troutman I agree matt. It takes few attempt for me to tie new pattern correctly.
Thank you. I have done a few of these flies and they are looking a lot better. I bought a better vise (rotary) and that has helped.

👍👍👍
What is the clear wrap that you are using? (Sorry, I couldn't understand what you called it in the video.)
Its called Clear Stretch Elastic
mak -flies Thanks for the quick reply. Fantastic videos. I like your precision and thread control. You're very good at building a nice tapered body on the hook shank. Well done!

Heat tubing with a bic lighter ( torch ) flatten between thumb and forefinger.
