"The dude gave me a complete setup for free". Yes! That's oldtimers giving the youngins the push they need to get their own barn full of scara's. Awesome! What a great dude!
Something like this has also happened to me. It gave me a huge push into micro machining on Swiss machines. I plan to do the same thing when I’m in a position to. Guys like this change lives.
this video is a year old, but half the comments are from 3 days ago... I found this on the home page. I'm glad good material like this is getting picked up more by youtube.
I bought an Epson Vt6L from a fairly prominent high end vise manufacturer having no idea how to use it. The process of getting one of these things and learning from nothing is such a rewarding feeling. Getting it, sending it home for the first time, getting your first motion commands and talking to IO ports. It's especially helpful having people who are willing to lend a hand in the process. For that, I need to shout out the guys at PSC up in New York, they are an awesome crew.
A tip for anyone looking for a short. Replace the fuse with a low wattage light bulb. If shorted itll glow. if already shorted itll glow until you find the short. good work on the robot!
Ah yes, the “I contacted someone to ask about buying something and ended up getting it for free” strategy. I also have experience with this. It’s a very odd feeling, but I am extremely thankful for it when it happens. I got a no longer produced pack of Fuji FP-100c this way, and then proceeded to screw up the first 3 pictures because I didn’t understand how it worked… 5 pictures are left and I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to use this awesome film and will be saving it for very special occasions.
Difference between you and me is that I have merely have interest and you have ambition! This old timer recognized you had what it takes to see your vision through and was more than happy to give the equipment to a good home where it would get great use. Don't feel bad at all, I'm sure he was just as happy to give them as you were to receive them!
Ugh the most maddening controllers ever, I’m so glad adept controllers aren’t made anymore. I just threw a bunch away. Glad you got yours working well though!
cool vid and good job on the troubleshooting. Always remember though this is industrial equipment and therefore dangerous. Even though it's small it can still malfunction and swing around and hit you, possibly ending up in an emergency room visit.
That man is an awesome man, makes the whole vid wholesome

Aaah, this story reminds me of when I went to the local electronics shop to buy a replacement fuse for my 3MP (!) digital camera, a very small surface-mount fuse mind you! I mentioned that I was not exactly sure how to solder it, and they kindly directed me to someone who might be able to help me. Turns out the guy was a retired robotic electronics guy, but he was also constantly getting pulled in to new, small jobs since he was the only one with the right knowledge. Also he did the soldering of my camera fuser for free! :)
So cool. and Sooo generous of that guy. Talk about looking after the next generation. Hat's off to him, and to you in your pursuits. I think you may have found a new subscriber. :)
amazing video, i just suscribed. over here in mexico these robot arms are not only hard to find but impossible to get a way to learn it.thanx for sharing your story
That old dude is frigging insane, in his life achievements - the equipment he has and his generosity.... If in his position with a keen newcomer I'd totally be giving them stuff to be internested.
Awesome, i wish i could have these toys at home too, It would help alot to study automation and robots. I have an old télémécanique testbed which was used by a school, its old but very interesting
id love to set one of these up to automate my print farm, you could setup a track for it to run forward and reverse on to go up and down an isle of printers to clear prints and bin them.
Are you sure you can run both at the same time? It could be a safety feature that this is not allowed. If arm1 ist static, arm2 can do it's path planning and does exactly know where the allowed area is. Otherwise they would need bidirectional online path prediction
🤔 possibly, I'd have to do more research. But I think it has to do with the fact that the controller only has one AWC card, which is like the brains of the controller.
@@coybeardmore lol they have machines there that haven't been supported for more than 40 years and despite the issues we have with many of them, they'd rather invest in automation like cobots. I'm just glad I'm not maintenance 😆
lol I just happened to get the exact same robot arm for free a few years ago. Mine came with a controller but I gave up on trying to use that because I have no 3 phase power. Still yet to get to building a custom controller for it but this video inspired me to pick it back up!
Awesome! The Adept PA-4 controller actually doesn't need 3phase power. It will run off of split phase 240v. Here is how mine is wired: L1 to S2 L2 to S3 L2 to S4
FYI, compared to a lot of industrial hardware, robots don't have much used market value, beyond just parts and replacement units for existing (but older) production cells. They're a bit like CNC machines in a way, since they inherently get less accurate over time. Not by much, and often not enough to actually justify selling them for scrap value. Robots are pretty much the same, and in a way do lose their reliability rating and accuracy over time. But again, not by much, and certainly not enough to justify selling working units for scrap. I work in machine building for medical device production, so high value stuff. But it kinda feels wrong to use a brand new Kuka arm, requiring all new software, calibration equipment and training, when we could've just bought the same robots we were using 4-5 years ago second hand, and probably get better results.
how to get free robot arms, find a mysterious government contractor with no online presence and above top secret clearance in the US government. Got it! Sky net here i come
I’m doing my best not be bitter about life, but when is a break like this ever coming for me? Maybe we should do aware with the concept of fairness if for nothing else than help people not feel so utterly jilted by life again and again.
This is great and all but who "Just has" free stuff given to them. Another thing, who has a complete shop set up to drill, mill and machine parts? Videos like this are just a huge load of BS to normal people who do not have an outlet like this. Total BS

Think of it more like 1 less pile of junk that his beneficiaries will have to sell to the scrapyard.
incredible.

This is fanstastic, I’d never seen a robot arm like the kind you showed here. Excited to see more!
Oh cool! I inherited one of these arms and also came across this same guy. He mailed me the hard drives and other things I needed to get it running!

That last bit got me to sub. I love it when people new to the industry pay proper respect to the old timers.

Extremely impressive! I can’t imagine all your hard work that went on behind the scenes..
Awesome guy giving you that stuff. He clearly wants you to succeed.
You can use blender to calculate all your joint angles and be able to use inverse kinematics because it is animation software

Really like the video and info!
Keep going man. You gonna grow up as Chanel quickly 💪
Hey man, this is super cool. things like this take time and I appreciate it!
this was randomly recommended to me, idk why, but hello, and I hope this comment further helps in the algorithm boosting this great video :)

I needed this video today, thank you!
I had the chance to work with a ur3 robot for a paid project and got to keep it. these robots are so fun to work with !!!

Great video thank you! I am looking for a second hand collaborative robot for my contents in programming robot with ROS. Do you have any suggestions?
I've never programmed through ROS. But if that's what your trying to learn I'd get a cheapo hobby arm off eBay to experiment with.
Bro love your channel
Would be great for sorting items passing between them if it has a camera and basic ai deciding on rhe item

add cam systems with AI object recognition and its a recipe for some fun
How can I get in touch with the guy who gave you the arm? I would like to buy one.
What's with the shot of a plate with an egg on toast and a half eaten sausage on it? at 6:03
It's a clip from another video :)

I have that exact robot arm at my job and it functions as a screw bot (it's usually down for repairs though)
Time for a new one :)

Clicked for the the stud in the thumbnail :p
this story reminds me of cyberpunk stuff, becoase of how robots have become common enought for common poeple to have thier own robots
Kinda wish you kept him more anonymous, but I suppose its inevitable we figure out how you found him, if you tell the story.
THATS AWESOME
what a legend
Are you a mechanical engineer?
No :(, still in college at the moment
Excellent

great, i just have to find my own sugar daddy to get robot arms for free, thanks for the tip
This is proof that with money, determination, and time in mommy's basement, you can make anything in this world.🥰

How is $314.18 free? tired of all these disingenuous youtubers. If you have talent you shouldn't need clickbait!
Just say ur broke
You didn't watch the video. The ebay arm was $400, the other arms were free.
