- Pop star Lulu has always wanted to get to the bottom of a family mystery. She knows that her mum, the middle child of seven, was the only one to be given up by her birth parents and raised by another family, but she has no idea why. Lulu travels home to Glasgow, where she uncovers the real-life Romeo and Juliet story of her Catholic grandfather and Protestant grandmother's love affair across the city's strict sectarian divide. Digging deeper, she discovers some dark secrets about her grandfather's past which force her to reassess what she thought she knew about her mum's story.

My late husband's mother was raised Protestant. She fell in love with a Catholic man. Her father told her that if she married her love, her family would immediately disown her and none of them would ever speak to her again. Forty years later, the day her father died, my mother-in-law's brother called her and arranged a visit. This happened here in the U.S.
That was common. Catholics were often looked down upon as well. You simply did not ‘mix’ religions.
Very similar thing happened to my mother's partner. He found out at school when he was about 7 that his mother wasn't his real mother, but his foster mother. Some of his siblings were also placed with her but the mother took them back. She thought it would be wrong taking him back because the foster mother was all he'd even known. He found his siblings again at the age of 70 via ancestry dna. They hadn't forgotten him 😢
Interesting story, sad for Lulu's mother. Great to see Lulu - she looks fabulous!
She has to be over 70 and she looks amazing!
Yep, the plastic surgeon did a good job 👌
@@delftblue8801she's 75
Lulu looks grand....recall going the theatre in North Battleford to see To Sir With Love... she looks amazing
My mom was given away, as the only one of 9 children. Her mother was a house hold help, her father was alcohol addicted. The unmarried sisters her mother cleaned for said to her "if it's a girl, we would be happy to take her" and my grandmom agreed. She was overwhelmed and dead poor. My mother always knew and had to visit with her birth family but had such a different life and upbringing that it never came to real bonding. I think in that generation it was far more common to hand children over for their own benefit and to enlighten the burden on overwhelmed moms. These women often were pregnant within a few months after the last baby was born, it was havock for them.
I'm surprised that Lulu has not seen her cousin since the 1960? if that is true they look happy to see her
I used to work in Chelsea girl argyle st Glasgow and I served Lulu's mum and Edwina. Wot a delight to see them.🙂
Loved Chelsea girl
Mixed marriages were not so unusual. Contentious in the families but not rare at all.
Statistically, they were rare. Most people prefer spouses like themselves.
It's all a load of crap when people get all het up about the differences. I come from a family of mixed religions, none of us worry about it. I was a Cairns from Edinburgh.
This was the distant past .
❤❤❤LULU LOOKS SO GOOD..DO YOU STILL SING??MY YOUNGEST GRANDBABY IS NAMED LOUISE..WE CALL HER LULU!!❤❤❤
To Sir ... with Love ❤
Fascinating story. 💜
Lulu’s son is so much like John Frieda
Yes he is spitting double of John Freda ,nothing at all of his mother in him.
I have her autograph that I got through the mail a few years ago. One of my favorite entertainers.
How can I get the picture 🖼️ you got from her to 😊
Lulu is more beautiful each year ❤. My older sister introduced me to her music and I have loved her ever since mid 70s❤. Family secrets and skeletons are painful. Its very sad what parents had to do back then 😢
Maybe she was the result of a love affair ,that's lulu's mother I mean , could be wrong though ??
whenI seeher brother I think of her brother reciting Burns at Whitehill.
Lulu remember Nancy MacDonald fron Irongray Street? ❤🏴🙏
You go for a job interview in London and communicate in a glasgow accent in the 60’s. She had to change hers or she would not be where she is today.
My dad never met his father's dad and neither did my grandfather
What happened to Lulu’s Glaswegian accent? It’s odd that she can go back and forth!
She probably talks posh to fit in with the crowd in london
Tell her to look up mystery of her accent!
What's your point?
@htimsid She goes from American accent to Scottish to English. False through and through. And not talented at all. Second rate. Always has been. That's my point!!!
❤
She has a strong Glasgow accent
I bet she still has the pipes though.🎶
oh no lulu.... Gary borelows pal
Lulu, s brother is her double ,they have the same nose😊
Lulu has a slight American accent....🤔
Very sad to know you were given away.
I think you need to be grateful, provided that you were raised by a loving family.
